using my proprietary marathon points metric, i offer the following ranking of metly starting pitchers: dickey 288.5 capuano 118.3 niese 115.2 gee 112.6 pelfrey 83.3 batista sits at 75 with young at 62. thanks to the quirkiness of schaefer voting, i actually awarded pelfrey the 2nd most schaefer votes of any starting pitcher. which basically means that he was both really good and really bad. not what you really want to rely upon.

using my proprietary marathon points metric, i offer the following ranking of metly rookies: turner 184 duda 174.8 gee 112.6 beato 72.7 pridie 44.25 duda netted ever so slightly more of my schaefer votes, 58.2 to 56, while gee jumps up to 55.1.

if you use fangraphs' WAR, posada comes in at 11th best catcher of all time. ahead of him are the names you would expect - bench, fisk, pudge, carter, berra, piazza, bill dickey, mickey cochrance, ted simmons, and gabby hatnett. of those names, neither pudge nor piazza are yet eligible, but are expected, whispers and suspicions aside, to sail into the hall of fame. only ted simmons is unenshrined. of all the catchers behind him in WAR, only roy campanella was elected to the hall through the popular vote. there are a bunch of really weak hall of famers who came in through either the veterans committee or the old timers committee. ted simmons, with 50.4 WAR got only 3.7% of the vote in 1994, and dropped fmor the ballot. posada sits at 44.9 WAR. just behind him are wally schang at 43.8 WAR, who got a meager 4.1% of the vote in 1960 and dropped, thurman munson, whose 43.4 WAR and untimely death netter him a peak of 15.5% of the vote in 1981, his first year on the ballot, and bill freehan, whose 43.4 WAR was good enough for only 0.5% of the 1982 vote. and it's not like all of posada's postseason experience should boost him much - his postseason OPS is some 100 points lower than his regular season OPS. i think the hall of fame has a really weak batch of catchers in there. posada would be the worst catcher admitted by the writers who did not die young. not by much, but by enough. bbref, btw, is less kind to posada. in addition to the afore mentioned ten catchers who are ahead of him in their WAR metric, bbref also has bill freehan and lance parrish.

musial fouls the first pitch off to the right behind the dugout. what a catch by that familiar-looking fan - i swear i've seen him at at least ten of the mets' greatest games. and... did he just dash off and left a small black circle in his place? i actually have batista down for 7.4 schaefer votes in the final game, but with the 6 point cap, i've reallocated it to the other guys. that's the highest schaefer vote total i've generated this year, and hi 42.5 "marathon point" performance (which is scaled relative to the other five top performers of the game to a 10-point base level) was the second best performance of hte season, bested only by capuano's 45.75 marathon point effort on 26 august. this performance displaced taylor buchholz as my 30th most schaeferly-voted met in 2011 (which inclodes both games that i did not vote in, and points above the 6 point cap)

the nice thing about the red sox collapse, and to a lesser extent, the braves, is that its being called the biggest collapse in history. they're wrong, as neither was worse than 07, both playoff-odds-wise and games-up-with-games-left-wise. with 17 to go, the sox were only up by 4.5 games. the braves, whose collapse is being greatly undersold, were up by 6.5 games.

hmm. in the six years we've been doing this league, this is the first season where the winner had neither the top batters (#2, with 52.5 points) nor the top pitchers (#5 with 45 points). those honors fall to guldens spicy brown offense at 60.5 points and smg58's pitchers at 53 points. los luncheros racked up 51 points.

i still feel that as a fan, i should be rooting for them, not decrying them. how can i possibly indoctrinate minimm into out miserable little cult if i curse them out? the kid has mastered "yay mets!" by the way. smart man.

if i had the time and the inclination, i'd really like to play with rotosheet or bbref and take a look at the yearly batting average winners, and how they played their final game relative to their respective playoff situations and the batting title race. i know there are plenty of players who played and plenty who sat, and there might be a few who exited early. i'd just like to quantify it a bit. researching contemporary relative moral outrage would then be a fun follow-up.
