  1. Pretty good. They learned from the mistakes of the second (i.e., have an interesting villain) in #3, and learned more from #3 (i.e., it's the Impossible Mission Force, not just Tom Cruise).
  2. 1935 MFY opening day lineup: Earle Combs LF Red Rolfe 3B George Selkirk RF Lou Gehrig 1B Bill Dickey C Ben Chapman CF Tony Lazzeri 2B Frankie Crosetti SS Lefty Gomez P
  3. OK. We all knew it happened today. What other teams fielded home grown lineups? I discovered one. On July 26, 1975, the Dodgers fielded: Davey Lopes 2B Bill Buckner LF John Hale CF Steve Garvey 1B Willie Crawford RF Ron Cey 3B Steve Yeager C Bill Russell SS Doug Rau P And someone found the Pirates did it on April 21, 1971: Dave Cash, 2b Richie Hebner, 3b Roberto Clemente, rf Willie Stargell, lf Al Oliver, cf Bob Robertson, 1b Manny Sanguillen, c Gene Alley, ss Dock Ellis, p To Retrosheet!
  4. Greg Goossen jumped from A ball. Nolan Ryan jumped from AA. Both were sent down before sticking, though.

Better to give Harvey another year in AAA than rush him up. The Mets have a long history of rushing prospects, and it rarely works out. Harvey is not going to put the team in the playoffs, so it's better not to mess with his development.

  8. Ted Williams hit more HRs than Yaz.
  9. Shouldn't Schwin be using a bicycle?
  10. It looks like he's only charging minimal rates (a buck a photo for many of them) and the items are probably reprints, not originals. I don't see any problem with this -- it honors Casey and doesn't try to bilk people.

  12. Owen was a better Woody than Kenneth Branagh was. I liked it, but I'm a big Woody Allen fan, and a fan of Paris.
  13. Torres had a bad season last year. The numbers are not as important as what he does in 2012.
  14. Supposedly, Hornsby scouted the NL before the 1962 season and only had one positive comment: "Looks like he could be a major league ball player." The player in question was Willie Mays.
  15. Last year, even with everything -- injuries and losing Beltran halfway through -- the Mets led the divison in runs scored per game. They'll lose a bit with Reyes gone, but will pick up with the shorter fences. They were also second in the NL in OBA and OPS+ and it only dropped about ten points once Beltran left. Again, there will be a drop-off with Reyes gone, but if they can get a full year from Murphy and Davis, they'll more than make up for it. So the team's offense should be a good one. The starting pitching, though, is very iffy. Only Dickey can be depended on. Niese will probably be strong (if he's not injured again), and Pelfrey and Gee and Santana are big question marks. And there's not much down on the farm that's ready to replace them, either. The bullpen has been improved overall. So can they compete? Depends entirely on the starting pitching. But there's no need to worry about the offense.
  16. Banning Megdal is an even more stupid move than the Amos Otis for Joe Foy trade. The Mets will end up with far worse press than if they just ignored the book and, eventually, they will cave and give him the credentials anyway. There is no way that the team can come out of this without looking terrible. It will be far more damaging to their reputation than any book on Madoff and there is no way they can salvage this gaffe.

  19. The show might have sucked, but this is just a great title sequence. [youtube:32b4jrok]Hj-QRfTjjDg[/youtube:32b4jrok] As was this: [youtube:32b4jrok]fpivIYJFjd4[/youtube:32b4jrok]
  20. Because, according to Sabermetrics, scoring runs is not the object of baseball.

It certainly seems to be an open question how costly that was and how incompetent it was --- and there's some level at which we shouldn't ever be taking initial diagnoses as fact --- but Sandy seems to be denying a misdiagnosis ever took place. Except why was it misdiagnosed? This happens all the time, everywhere, where doctors don't think to get a certain test to check for a certain problem because the symptoms often hint at a more probable problem. The same with Santana. Him throwing a bullpen session was part of the way they figured out what was actually wrong. Did Rubin expect Santana to say "My Anterior Capsule feels like it's torn." Were trainers supposed to determine this, not common, injury by poking and prodding him and his vague descriptions of where the pain was? Exactly. Even Greg House makes wrong diagnoses before getting it right. Sometimes the symptoms look like one thing and you eventually discover it's something else. This happens with all clubs. But the Mets problems haven't been so much misdiagnoses (though there were some big mistakes made) as the large number of injuries overall. And a lot of this was bad luck. If Billy Wagner hadn't gone down in 2008, the Mets would have made the playoffs.
  22. The stupidity -- it burns!!!!

That name has also been spotted spelled "Suwannee." She's kind of wears those trashy rich lady sunglasses. I can forgive that, just stay away from Anna.
