  1. 1. Who opens the season as the Mets main firstbaseman? Davis. He'll have a deceptively good spring training, then fall flat on his face when the season starts. 2. Who opens the season as the Mets main shortstop? Tejada? Quintanilla? Tovar? Seratelli? Flores? Tejada. By default. 3. The Mets opened the season with two entrenched outfielders and then went out and signed two more, both versatile. Bad news for somebody, right? What will the regular alignment be come April 1? C. Young, Lagares, Granderson. EY will be supersub. 4. Barring injury, Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese, Dillon Gee, and Zack Wheeler look to open the season as members of the Mets rotation? Whos's number five? Pretty much a huge field to pick from: Matsuzaka? Mejia? DeGrom? Torres? Lannan? Montero? Syndergaard? Dice-K. Then Torres, Lannan and Mejia. Jenrry will go to Vegas if he doesn't get the job. Torres or Lannan will stick around as long guy/swing guy. If Dice-K doesn't outright win the job, he's released. 5. Backup catcher? Recker. Sandy can't resist those dreamy eyes.
  2. Murph was a little different. He hung up his mike and died a few months later. Ralph was on a long glide path. He hadn't done a regular broadcast schedule since 1998 because of the Bell's palsy. So he became the old uncle you'd see occasionally, just enough to remain familiar with him.
  3. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm Omar Quintanilla, and I approve this message. Fixed that for you.
  4. Another thing about that picture....real men like Ralph don't need batting helmets.
  5. From the comments was one thing that leapt out at me: My favorite part was when Tim was going on and on about Ralph's popularity on both coasts, and Ralph said, What about Pittsburgh? That was vintage 80's Ralph, right there. He was a Hall of Famer back then too, but he wasn't treated with too much deference by his broadcast partners, and he gave as good as he got. While it was good to see him later in the aughts and teens, he was treated so much like an icon (which granted, he was) and not enough like a broadcaster (which he was a lot longer than he was a ballplayer). You could see sometimes he'd want to jump back into it, like that day with McCarver, but age and the Bell's palsy wouldn't let him do it. So while I was glad to see him, I was always a little sad about what time had done to him. When my wife and I were watching Ralph in the last game of last season, we both wondered out loud if it'd be the last time we'd see him. It was.
  6. When Kiner's Korner was sponsored by Mitsubishi, I'd tune in just to see if he'd ever get it right. He never did. His malaprops and mispronunciations were just part of the deceptive charm. He was a keen baseball mind right up to the end.
  7. Ralph, say hi to Gary Carter or Gary Cooper, whoever you see first. Let's just say, that this is a man who did not get cheated. He lived a long, fascinating, rich, rewarding life. Home run hitters drive Cadillacs.
  8. My car radio breathes a sigh of relief.
  9. Funny story. I was walking through the woods yesterday, and wouldn't you know it....

  11. Perhaps I should be more specific. If they use Chris Carlin as the partner of Howie Rose on Mets radio broadcasts, I will disable my car radio. He can do Rutgers football and basketball until he's blue in the face.
  12. If they get Chris Carlin I will disable my car radio.
  13. I think Met fans understand that if they ever win the World Series, it'll be despite the Wilpons, not because of them.
  14. What were you doing that would cause you to stumble over pictures of Junior Ortiz? When I stumble over pictures, it's generally cute cats or stuff like this:
  15. It's like the Great Gazoo helmet David was wearing when he came back from his beaning. The technology will evolve and won't look like this eventually. I'm betting in a few years they'll have something that's virtually indistinguishable from a regular cap.
  16. Everyone would call him 'bishop'.

  18. Boy, some guys had helmet hair, but Foli had a Hair Helmet.
  19. Surprised he'd stick around for a minor-league deal at minimal bucks. He could probably do a lot better if he went back to Japan.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence, if I remember my American History/baseball trivia correctly. That's his brother Caesar, only a quarter of the pitcher he is.
  21. After his stunningly bad couple of starts, didn't pitch that badly. Nothing to lose on a minor league deal except the spring training meal allowance.
