  1. I got a feeling they're doing nothing. Most of the urgency for a trade is coming from the papers and us fans, not the front office. Collins already anointed Tejada as his shortstop, and nothing has come of trade talks for Davis or Duda. I think what you see is what you get. Not a 90-win team, but Sandy can always talk himself out of that one later.
  2. Gee's a generic pitcher; not great, not terrible, but certainly a useful piece of any rotation. We know what Gee can do. Gregorius/Owens/whoever is a bit of a mystery. We're also assuming that things beyond 2014 are going to be great from a pitching perspective, but prospects don't always pan out. There's a need for the Dillon Gee's of the world.
  3. Boy, you're really rolling the dice if you deal Gee. Colon, Wheeler, Niese, Dice-K, Mejia/Lannan is a really scary rotation. Reinforcements will be on the way, but it'd be an uncomfortable April and May.
  4. As a 5th outfielder where the 4 ahead of him are competent to excellent defensive outfielders, he's not going to see a lot of playing time even if he does make the team.
  5. Owings, although Gregorius has such a great name. They'll want Montero and I'd probably say no. Nobody wants Davis or Duda. 'Sucky' and 'Hurt' are not two trade-enhancing characteristics.
  6. Whatever happened to Wilfredo Tovar? He appeared briefly last year and looked like a good-field, no-hit type, which is preferable to a no-field, no-hit type like Tejada.....is he still on the radar? Is he getting the reps at Vegas this year?

A lot of his sentences started with, "I always used to do this....". His analysis was, "He's throwing pretty hard". The man should be nowhere near the business end of a microphone. Josh soldiered on, but I'm betting he wished he could have canceled any Islander game that resulted in him being trapped in a booth with Franco for three and a half hours.

  9. Meanwhile, Tejada's performance-art continues apace: 0-for-3 with a rally-killing GiDP, an error on a routine grounder, and a barking hammy yesterday. He'll start again today, and leadoff, because this is our way. Maybe he's just getting all his crappy play out of his system now, in spring training. Look! A cup! And it's half full!
  10. "If you don't overpay my client you're not trying."
  11. Ceetar wrote: .305/.405/.505 25 HR, both 100 RBI and 100 R (thanks Curtis). MVP. Gold Glove. Silver Slugger. Starting the All-Star Game. Agree with all of the above, except that he'll be MVP of the team, not the league. David will be David.
  12. Considering the Phils finished exactly one game behind the Mets last year and that Jimmy (no shrinking violet he) would probably give lots of quotable stuff to the press about Philly, I think they'd rather send him as far away as they could. The Piazza trade doesn't really count- they were in blow-it-up mode in 1998 and didn't care where they were sending people. Al Leiter came from them as well.
  13. If Rollins doesn't cost too much in talent, I'd take him. Solidifies the position for a year. Don't see the Phils trading him to the Mets, though.
  14. Gets bored with rehab, tries his hand at Connecticut summer stock in a revival of Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes. Snags a boffo review from the Times critic, then moves to Broadway to play opposite James Franco in a revival of Of Mice and Men. Critically acclaimed, Ben Brantley exclaims, "Mr. Harvey's intense portrayal of the doomed gentle giant Lennie is a revelation- a Lennie for the ages." His Broadway career and quick marriage to Faith Prince breaks the hearts of millions, and he never looks back.
  15. I worry about Wheeler too. It's not just the innings pitched; it's the number of pitches required to complete those innings. I think he'll get 10 wins, but it'll be a struggle as he'll have a Leiter-like propensity to hit 100 pitches early in games resulting in extensive bullpen use.
  16. Dan Warthen always struck me as a character out of Mayberry RFD.
  17. To have save situations, you need games to be close and in your favor come the 9th inning. This isn't a team that'll be brimming with those opportunities. Parnell will be okay. 3-4, 3.00, 28 saves, 4 HR allowed.
  18. Ceetar wrote: There's also the idea that standing firm on Hairston, and being willing to take nothing helped land the haul they ultimately got for Byrd. Sandy had history on his side when he said "This is my final offer. take it or leave it." and the other teams would believe that he wouldn't take less than that. This is the price, and you'll pay it or you don't get him. Whereas if they had dumped Hairston for nothing, the Pirates maybe wait another day or two figuring Alderson will get desperate and take less. Long con. That's 11-dimensional chess. Sandy doesn't seem to like the proverbial bag 'o' balls. He was probably offered numerous bags of balls for Hairston and turned them down. Didn't seem like anyone was offering anything as tantalizing as the Black/Herrera combo at the time. So he kept him. If that was to build his street cred as a non-bag'o' -taker, then kudos to him. Could come in handy if Colon or others are dangled this July.
  19. Agree on Granderson. We're all assuming Duda/Davis will suck, but we're all assuming the Grandy Man will be good. If he's not, we've got 4 years of crap to look forward to. See: Bay, Jason.
  20. Sent to minor league camp today.
  21. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Did anyone yet mention that Colon could be the Mets best inning-eater? 'Cause I'll go with that one if no one else did. Yes, but those innings always seem to go to his hips.
  22. Just don't see him on this team, lefty or no. In August, becomes a line of 8-point agate type in Baseball Weekly under 'transactions' where he's claimed off the wire by Cleveland.
  23. Probably fills the hole when Dice-K commits virtual seppuku on the mound at some point in early-mid season. 4-3, 4.50, lotsa strikeouts.
  24. 0,0, .000. Lost in the shuffle.
  25. I'm guessing he'll be able to pound the strike zone with regularity, which will tip the scales in his favor. 12-12, 3.90, 68 hot dogs.
