  1. My wife worked for Doubleday Dell Publishing back before it was sold to Bertelsmann. Nelson was a man who, to put it politely, liked his drink. He wasn't exactly dedicated to the publishing business, and the Mets were like a toy to him. He got completely outmaneuvered by Wilpon for control of the team, and he resented it bitterly. He was a bit of a dilettante and wasn't accustomed to dealing with sharks. He had a liver transplant in the 90's which may have explained his haggard appearance then. It's surprising he made it to 81.

The runner at first took off, and then the runner on third took off for home. The Mets sniffed it out and got the runner in a rundown, tagging him for the third out.
  3. Niese is maddening when he can't close out an inning. But stupid Blue Jay baserunning saves the day.
  4. 6th Starter Day would make a lot of sense, and Niese will conveniently come down with an oblique or gout or Scratchy Beard Syndrome or some such shortly thereafter.....
  5. Best reaction so far: Brandon McCarthy ?@BMcCarthy32 19 hours ago in keeping with baseball tradition, a Houston exec should walk into the STL offices and hit their best front office guy with a fastball.
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: The Yanx ass-whoopin' was made even more fun when you realized that the starting pitchers for the night were traded for each other over the winter. I think it's safe to say that the ex-NYY/current Marlin David Phelps [7 IP, 2 R, 6 Hits] out-pitched ex-Marlin/current MFY Nathan Eovaldi [2/3 IP, 8 runs, 9 hits] That bottom of the 1st wasn't baseball, it was pure porn. Kept imagining the Sterling face during that inning.
  7. This is just awesome. When do they play the Phillies again?
  8. Edgy MD wrote: Utley didn't want Francoeur unusable for today. Classic.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: btw, well played by Duda on that Jays base-running gaffe. Not only did he run right at the runner like you're supposed to rather than throw the ball prematurely, but he ran in a way that didn't let him head back towards 2nd and was easily able to get the out without making a single throw. So, for the second night in a row, one is left to ponder what Murphy would have done had he been the cut-off man in that situation. I think 'going for a two point conversion' would have been among his top choices. Or perhaps the Statue of Liberty play.
  10. Wow. Bobby Pee pulls it off. Scary watching him pitch with a 92 mph fastball, but that curve was nasty.
  11. Sheesh. Parnell back for the 9th. Guess I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
  12. Oy. Who closes? Akeel Morris?
  13. A 70% Parnell against Bautista with the bases loaded? I can't look.
  14. If only we could have hacked into Adam Wainwright's arm.
  15. They won't win the Wild Card; too many other teams that are better. They could snag the East, but that would require the season-long cooperation of the Nationals, which I don't think is going to happen. I'd expect them to fall out of first place by the end of June. They'll have their best year since 2008, but they won't make the playoffs.
  16. Hwy, you're a loser, so why not play those numbers that humiliated you so you can lose again at Lotto?
  17. Lol at Keith: "He's pretty good, isn't he?"
  18. Gah. Another double play not turned.
  19. High-scoring slugfests are not a core competency of this Mets team.
  20. I think it's this guy, who'll always have a warm spot in the hearts of Yankee-haters everywhere.
  21. Loved her in that Spelling Bee movie with Laurence Fishburne.
  22. I got a baaaaad feeling about this series. Toronto is just firing on all cylinders right now.
  23. 1977 New York Mets traded Tom Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds for Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson, Pat Zachry and Dan Norman on June 15, 1977. New York Mets traded Dave Kingman to the San Diego Padres for Bobby Valentine and Paul Siebert on June 15, 1977. A very dark day. That was a Wilpon-grade F-U to the fans. The clouds didn't begin to lift until exactly 6 years later. Can't speak to the pantyhose.
