  1. Once you become the owner of a collection like that, you become a slave to it, I would imagine.
  2. I think Ross is good thinking, but I think is pretty comparable to Pagan. Never as good a defender as Pagan in 2010 but not as bad as Pagan was in 2011. (And I insist he was.). But I can't see him coming in for fewer $ or years.
  3. I think they let him go and aim cheaper right now and higher down the road. That could mean [crossout]Niewewnehieuees[/crossout] Newey. It's potentially not a big dropoff up front and it feeds the Reyes fund. I still have this notion of Carlos Gomez.
  4. Nearest to ready? Most literally, it's Pridie followed by Fernando Perez. Nearest to ready with the talent you want to see is probably Nieuwenhuis followed by Matt Den Dekker. Nieuwenhuis had 50 games at AAA, but at least he hit. He could start if they're, you know, punting.
  5. Mets settled two lawsuits today. Two! In one day! Unrelated! First one with a former employee or employees who claimed that the Mets led them to blow their money with Madoff. The second was from the lady injured when the big dude fell on her. Maybe now we see if we have Reyes money left over. You want unbecoming statements from a GM, how about if he says, "Can we sign him? I dunno. How much is that fat guy gonna cost us?"
  6. Baseball America sez: 1. Zack Wheeler, rhp 2. Matt Harvey, rhp 3. Brandon Nimmo, of 4. Jeurys Familia, rhp 5. Cesar Puello, of 6. Jenrry Mejia, rhp 7. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, of 8. Michael Fulmer, rhp 9. Reese Havens, 2b 10. Wilmer Flores, ss As for other categories, the magazine named Juan Lagares as the best hitter for average, Zach Lutz as the best power hitter, Danny Muno as the best strike-zone discipline and Pedro Zapata as the fastest baserunner. In pitching categories, Wheeler claims the best fastball and curveball, with Harvey the best slider and Darin Gorski the top changeup and best control. Past kings of the hill Wilmer Flores and Fernando Martinez have dropped, to 10th and DNF, respectively. In the latter case, that's clearly falling stock. In the former, its the stock but also the stronger field. Still, it demonstrates some fallen confidence in the slow shortstop that oft-injured Reese Havens is ahead of him. Last year's #1 was Mejia, still holding strong to number six with his surgically repaired arm. But Familia? Holy crap, he's really gone from being Mejia lite to the passing the standard? And Puello? Really? .259 / .313 / .397 // .710 from an A-ball outfielder at 20? It's intriguing, but...

  8. I predicted celebrity boxing back in the early nineties. What an incredibly predictable disaster.
  9. There's division. That's what makes the start of this thread remarkable. The Mets sucked by all measures. I suppose that's in part due to the greater playing surface. The pitcher gets blamed for a 390-foot homer. The fielder gets statisically hung some for the same 390-foot drive that bounces for a double. But still! There's plenty of division... Can you show this to me? Because the data I've seen concurs that the Mets were the worst fielding team in the majors by each of the three leading measures. Concurrence. Corroboration. was agreeing with you in re: fielding metrics. I then was trying to say that three wrongs don't make a right. I disagree. Agreement from three independent sources certainly make something righter. That's the point of noting corroboration. And they're all working from a very large data set --- fielding by an entire team at all positions.
  10. My eyeball test had me thinking there was more than a step or two difference. My eyeball test had me thinking he went from excellent to fair.

  13. Now email me you dick In theory, this should fall flat someday. Still makes me cry.
  14. Thank you, G-F. Great work.
  15. Range factor is a very poor tool. Bill James invented it and then later dismissed it, with some degree of embarrassment.
  16. but he's really not frequently making errors. if we've learned anything on defense, and if there's anything all defensive measurers agree on, it's to not be overly distracted by error totals. The difference between 12 and 17 errors means little when the real difference between the same two players could be dozens of balls they get to or don't get to which count as hits.
  17. JosJosJos says "defend this": Hard to get to every ball when you're naked and gorgeous, haters.
  18. Bill James says Mets suck up the middle. So, are we ready to accept that Reyes is a large defensive burden? How much does/should that feed into the front office's challenge with regards to retaining him? I think redturn2 is history.
  19. Is Ricciardi JPD2?
  20. PDeP ain't moving him yet.
  21. Is this the first time they've ever judged outfielders by specific position, rather than collectively?
  22. McCourt agrees to sell the Dodgers. Potentially the first billion dollar baseball transfer. i know the most valuable sports franchises are appraised near $2 billion but have any clubs actually sold for that much? Eurofootball?
  23. Denials. B-Mets deny it. Met-Mets deny it.
  24. That's Chin-lung, baby. Get it right. Meanwhile, I hope this isn't sorta like a sinking ship sorta situation.
  25. I see the Mets really looking to go small in centerfield --- find a guy who can help turn their defense around and make every pitcher better, but be offensively inept enough to save them $4 off of Angel Pagan. A solid number-eight hitter, nonetheless with some minor offensive potential. I don't know who that guy is but Carlos Gomez comes to mind.
