  1. I'm certainly down with a playoff schedule with no days off. But I'm feeling that baseball had it right in the 19th century, and to a greater extent UK football has it right today. The champ is the team with the greatest record at the end of a full season. And if elimination play excites the pants of of you, have simultaneous cup play throughout the year, but don't pretend that the cup play results undo the season performance.
  2. I was expecting a lot of transactions and appointments that people were sitting on during the World Series and earlier to be announced Monday, but I guess this wasn't big enough for anything more than a press release, so they let it off the leash on a cold, precipitous Saturday.

  4. That's interesting. I was looking for an infielder, but I'll take it. Pretty analogous to Pettis. [list:3rtkl9yt][*:3rtkl9yt]Each is a speedy former outfielder.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each spent the majority of his career in the AL.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each wore Willie Mays' 24 with the Rangers.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each played about 1,200 games.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each stole about 350 bases.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each had negligible power --- 21 and 24 career homers.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each is listed at 6'1" and 165.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt] [*:3rtkl9yt]Each sadly (but justifiably) replaces Mookie Wilson as Mets first base coach and outfield coach.[/*:m:3rtkl9yt][/list:u:3rtkl9yt] Main difference is Pettis got more walks and Goodwin more singles.
  5. Are you in favor of scrapping league and division play and just crowning the guys with the best record after 162 games the champs?
  6. Well, they may not be all stars, but they're all American. They're being managed by 1982 Met Bruce Bochy (who I'm sort of suspicious of as an American manager, as he was born in France). Druew Butera heads over there with Met DNA as well. Unfortunately, he also heads there wit a .481 career OPS. Go, America!
  7. And the Cards it is.
  8. The 1975 Red Sox would have said that also.
  9. Lance F. Lynn. Are you kidding me? Pound this chump.
  10. metirish wrote: Per FOX stat last team to come back from a three run deficit in game seven? yes, the 1986 Mets God, was it three runs? In my mind, we had 'em all the way.
  11. Just a one-run lead, but the Rangers have to be feeling some heat about now.
  12. And the emboldened Cards swallow it up.
  13. A two-run lead for the Rangers. Those are always safe.
  14. Any updates from Paddy Power?
  15. Yeah, but more if it implies some sort of relationship.
  16. Now, I just got to go find me $160 million laying around.
  17. A few more thoughts: [list:26kzag96][*:26kzag96]Rudolph Giuliani[/*:m:26kzag96] [*:26kzag96]Lawrence Summers[/*:m:26kzag96] [*:26kzag96]Nolan Ryan[/*:m:26kzag96] [*:26kzag96]Kim Ng[/*:m:26kzag96] [*:26kzag96]Bill Richardson[/*:m:26kzag96][/list:u:26kzag96]
  18. Jerry F. DiPoto, by all counts, looks like he's getting the Anaheim job.
  19. Dykstra's ring sold for $56 G's and change. Are these worth that sort of money, or is it more like $5,000 and the rest is all the provenance of owning a ring formerly owned by a baseball champion turned scofflaw?
  20. Mike Silva reports on John Mitchell's minor bitterness over not getting a championship ring. I pitched in 4 games with 10 innings. Myers pitched 10 2/3 inns in 10 appearances. Check the 1987 media guide it will give the facts. If those guys got rings then Stanley and I should have received rings.
  21. Nats? Nuh-uh.
  22. Ceetar wrote: Thanks Ceetar.....fucking Freese eh? I have to say though, the Cardinals fans had some good signs I saw afterwards "Forecast for Game 6: Deep Freese" etc. Mike and Mike this morning had the gall to say something along the lines of "Shame it was Freese. If it was Pujols, this game would've been truly epic." Also start rattling off best WS games without mentioning '86. screw 'em. My guess is they hadn't heard of Freese before last night. Possibly before this morning.
  23. Yeah, the "we" jumped out at me also. "Low" is probably a touch of tabloid hyperbole, but it doesn't help the Mets position to have their offer publicly characterized as such before the numbers are known.
  24. He probably fast-forwards through the pizza-delivery part of his gay porn, too. I'm telling you: The action's NOTHING without the character and atmosphere!
  25. It seemed Lohse's bunt was pretty analogous to the situation that Willie chose to swing away in five years ago. That the Cards prevailed would seem to lend discredit to Willie and credit to LaRussa, but (1) Tony had emptied his bench, and (2) it was a real lucky break that bunt wasn't a double play. Remind me... what was sending Jackson up there first about?
