  1. Walt Jocketty has been in meetings this week formulating the Reds budget. It sounds like the the club did not suddenly discover an extra $10 or $20 million. That means another year of mostly being on sidelines when it comes to free agent shopping. So no calls to agents for Jose Reyes or C.J. Wilson. Oh, God, no, Jocketty said. Wed love to but we wont be doing anything like that. Weve got to be more creative. That's one!
  2. Smoley crap! Black drop shadows are out!
  3. The Longtime Slow Compilers would most uninspiring band name ever. I picture it as a supergroup of former and current members of Chicago, Heart, and Yes.
  4. Twenty five pounds lighter maybe.
  5. I don't look that bad.
  6. Ken Boswell.
  7. Don't dig that thread up. I won't look good.
  8. Buster Olney: Team officials telling lots of off-the-record stories today about how other players faced kidnapping threats in Venezuela.
  9. Rod Barajas finds a new home with Pittsburgh. One year plus an option.
  10. Guys who just sound like they were born to play for the team they played for. I open with "Jacoby Ellsbury" --- sounds like he was named after two Boston neighborhoods or outlying towns. His teammates should be named Franklin Roxbury and Winthrop Essex.
  11. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Heath Bell RED SOX Good one. A guy named "Heath" is so Red Soxy.
  12. Predicition: A few teams start operating their academies for Venezuelan baseball prospects out of Costa Rica or the DR. I've tended to think that MLB had a Blackwater-type security firm looking after the players during the winter league season, and that the the real vulnerability has been during the MLB season to players' extended families or to former players.
  13. I originally typed FIGHTERS next to Darvish's name, but thought that wasn't in the spirit of the thing. But now I feel like I cheated.

  15. Before Miami Vice said, "And her name is Miami, and she and all of Florida by extension shall be represented by teal and other Cuban pastels," orange was the color of Florida. Your typical map of the US from back when would render Florida in orange, I assume because that's where oranges (and grapefruits!) came from. A selective survey says: If Miami wants their uniforms to speak of the industry of the region instead of just the style, I'm OK with that. Maybe it's a sign that we want to represent ourselves as a people defined by what we produce, rather than just by what we consume.
  16. I also continue to feel that the error was a grossly exaggerated part of the rally. Not only had the tying run scored, but I think Mookie beats the play to the bag (although he might not of with a better firstbaseman able to play that ball more aggressively). Also, I think that wild pitch was a passed ball, and Gedman (it was Gedman, right?) has sort of escaped history on that score.
  17. Sure, that's where grace comes into play. He bent over gingerly, like he was balancing an appliance on his back.
  18. Contrasting orange sherbet belts. Very seventies. I expect that look from Doug DeCinces and the 1978 Orioles.
  19. It's a little late to claim that Buckner was the better fielder after your usage suggested you had been getting him out of there whenever you could. Buckner was a fine fielder in his younger days but by the 1986 post-season he had the mobility and grace of a mailbox.
  20. Checking my numbers, Maddox is wrong, as he doesn't have enough steals to qualify, but damn. SBCSPCT62221.4% Disastrous! How did you let this guy keep running, Joe Torre? Were these all failed hit-and-runs by Lee Mazzill swinging through the pitch?
  21. Elliott Maddox is worst.
  22. Word up.
  23. Rome, the spiritual home of all graffiiti. Here's an embiggened shot of that riot gate.
  24. Mets Graffiiti Pasadena Freeway Some back alley work done by "Enue": Unidentified NYC (possibly Brooklyn) Riot Gate: Unknown NYC Mets beer poster, defaced by pro-Mets tags: Some Spanish street gang apparently calling themselves "Mets" seems to have tagged half the country.
  25. Heyman sayeth that the Giants are cold. Marlins still hot. Tigers and Brewers warm. Nats are warmish. Mets are the Mets. It's all just noise!
