  2. Teddy Stankeiwicz has to get in the fold. When it comes to Jayce Boyd and Logan Taylor, well, I'm used to guys with two last names thinking their shit doesn't stink. Teddy has no excuses.
  3. Sure, but they're extracting their opinions purely from numbers. I really had to scrap to find anything resembling a panel of eight high end secondbasemen who came through town. Teufel? Really? You got guys who primarily played second as Mets, but didn't really earn their points there during their career, like Jeffries, or you got guys like Juan Samuel, who didn't make even a token appearance at second for the Mets. And neither put up that much career value anyhow. Short and third will look better.
  4. Even just taking advantage of Thursday's off day, you bump Young, and you get Niese/Dickey/Santana against the Yankees, all on standard four days rest, instead of Niese/Young Dickey. That sort of thing can buy you a few games over a season. Again, it's nothing radical. Hodges, Johnson, and Valentine all keyed their rotation to make sure their top starter got no more rest than was deemed medically appropriate, and off days were used to maximize the chance to use better starters rather than lesser ones.
  5. I'm not trying to propose anything radical here. Keying the rotation to make sure your top guy goes every fifth day is pretty common. Since they have two post-surgical pitchers that they want to buy an extra day of rest for here and there anyhow, it's really keying the rotation to keep the top three as close to schedule as possible.
  6. Yeah, but Terry was regretting getting him two extra days rather than one. He's still on a program, I think, of getting Johan rest when he can. If not, then this becomes easier --- skip number five whenever there's a day off.
  7. Maybe I'm the last to notice this, but from rounds 10-24, the Mets drafted 14 pitchers in 15 picks. 1 Gavin Cecchini, ss (HS) SIGNED 1 Kevin Plawecki, c (Col) SIGNED 2 Matt Reynolds, 3b (Col) SIGNED 2 Teddy Stankiewicz, p (HS) 3 Matt Koch, p (Col) SIGNED 4 Branden Kaupe, ss (HS) SIGNED 5 Brandon Welch, p (Col) SIGNED 6 Jayce Boyd, 1b (Col) 7 Corey Oswalt, p (HS) SIGNED 8 Tomas Nido, c (HS) SIGNED 9 Richie Rodriguez, 2b (Col) SIGNED 10 Paul Sewald, p (Col) SIGNED 11 Logan Taylor, p (Col) 12 Robert Whalen, p (HS) SIGNED 13 Matt Bowman, p (Col) SIGNED 14 Chris Flexen, p (HS) 15 Nicholas Grant, p (HS) 16 Myles Smith, p (Col) 17 Stefan Sabol, c (Col) SIGNED 18 Paul Paez, p (Col) 19 Tyler Vanderheiden, p (Col) SIGNED 20 Tim Peterson, p (Col) SIGNED 21 Gary Ward, p (Col) 22 Tejay Antone, p (HS) 23 Connor Baits, p (HS) 24 Andrew Massie, p (HS) 25 Leon Byrd, 2b (HS) 26 Chris Shaw, 1b (HSl) 27 Zach Arnold, c (HS) 28 Jacob Marks, p (HS) 29 Austin Barr, c (HS) 30 Dustin Cook, p (HS) 31 Vance Vizcaino, ss (HS) 32 Jon Leroux, 1b (Col) 33 Jared Price, p (HS) 34 Mikey White, ss (HS) 35 Brad Markey, p (Col) 36 Donovan Walton, ss (HS) 37 Benny Distefano, c (HS) (!!) 38 Jeff Reynolds, 3b (Col) 39 Patrick Ervin, 2b (HS) 40 David Gonzalez, p (HS)
  8. 'Nudder homer for DD today. Up to .261 / .308 / .652 // .960. Gotta be happy with that.
  9. Baseball-Reference really likes Willie too. Probably turned a helluva lot of DPs.
  10. Who was the greatest secondbaseman in Major League history to ever don a Mets uniform, without achieving all-time Met status. In other words, greatest keystoner in MLB history, who played for the Mets (no matter how well or poorly), not named Alfonzo.
  11. Yabbut, what we're crediting him for is his career. His career was not as a rightfielder.
  12. Jordany Valdespin goes 2-4 and gets his digits up to .200. Ike Davis gets a 1-3 (with the 1 going far) and lands himself on I-96. Hard to go much further north than that and not be driving in Canada. I-96 takes you from Detroit in the east and terminates at Grand Rapids in the west, so maybe Mets Guy will see Ike out there as he makes his final interstate exit. If those two get clear, four 2012 Mets will remain south of Mendoza: Jason Bay: .187 (Bronx to Champlain, New York) Mike Nickeas: .155 (LaPlace, Louisiana to Chicago, Illinois) Zach Lutz: .125 (Las Cruces, New Mexico to Buffalo, Wyoming) Josh Satin: .000 (not even in his car yet) It's possible Bay and maybe Lutz don't get another swing in 2012, but root for Satin and Nickeas to get their licks in while Baltimore is reeling. And yeah, don't stop rooting for Ike (or thinking about tomorrow, for that matter). He ain't driving in the streets of Grand Rapids yet.

Get a couple of guys into the Rolaids race and we could really be talking about something. Boxscore attendance says 29,014. Now I know NYC can do better than that for Dickey Day.

  15. So, now that Dickey is pretty much the number one starter, and being that his only competition for that role is somebody the team is trying to nurse back from injury, is it not advisable that the team consider keying the rotation to Dickey --- pitching him every fifth day, rather than every fifth game, and therefore using days off to occasionally either skip Johan or bump him back a day or so? Try and make sure the off days fall with either Santana or Young?
  16. This is unknowable. Can you imagine the condition of the agent that has stuck with him all these years negotiating one-year minor league deal after one-year minor league deal? He's going to have to have the dollar signs removed from his eyes.

  18. Wright looks like a threat to all that is decent. Darryl looks drunk off his ass.
  19. Are we set on the O's's pitcher?
  20. Yeah, I think it depends on which arm of the government. I think it's getting harder and harder to get juries to convict without the gun a-smoking these days. Maybe it's too many CSI shows creating a level of expectation of forensic certainty. Maybe it's the number of death row exonerations. Maybe it's because we never hear about juries in the news unless they screw it up. Maybe it's because defense attorneys are the ones painted as heroes in the media. Maybe it's all Clinton's fault. Maybe it's not a fault at all, but rather it's as it should be. But it's harder.

  22. Absummalutely not.
