  1. And Gee totally gets a 1-2-3 inning (henceforth to be known as "dickeying down") in the first.
  2. Yeah, Terry having nobody save Wright left who's under a longterm contract really gives him leave to do what he wants with the lineup pretty much on a nightly basis.
  3. Replacement level is pretty much designed to be the average performance of players grabbed off waiver wires. All those guys would seemingly exceed that.
  4. And that's his swan song (hopefully) in A-ball, as he, Wilfredo Tover, and Francisco Pea are heading to AA. Cory F. Mazzoni, too.
  5. The question on the table is this contract and whether he'd earn this amount of money.
  6. See, that's the best part.
  7. Cedeno back for the weekend series, but not expected to get more than one start, if any. Tejada rehab tour hitting Buffalo. Duda nursing a sore hammy, but available.
  8. Really? A family needs it's annoying Cousin Tommies, who can't quite figure out if we love him because of his act, or despite it. So he continues it, for years. And we all become afraid to sit down to tell him he doesn't have to be an idiot, that we all love him anyway, except we're afraid that rather than lift his fear, we worry that it might just make him feel ridiculous for carrying on all those years. It's dysfunctional, but it's part of what makes us a family. And it's beautiful. That guy is nothing without his Cow-Bell Man identity. You know he's got custom plates, and a flag and a tattoo and shit. But take that away and what do you have? Another guy that nobody will talk to at work. The world has enough of those. Give me CBM.
  9. Unofficial Cheerleaders, Ranked Sign ManCowbell ManConeheadsLady Who Twirled Her ArmsSign Man IILone Ranger of Shea Stadium That works for me. Do we rank fringe cheerleaders that may or may not have staying power or as long a history, like Darren of the 7 Line or Pin Man or that dog that with the pipe? Maybe at the back end. You gotta put in a few years. Sorry Darren.

  11. Peterson did more than see Kazmir. He took him, among others, down to James Andrews health center to undergo one of those telemetric evaluations. He certainly had the biomechanical data on the guy. What he did with it, and how much it scared the Mets is certainly open to debate.

  13. FanGraphs puts a dollar value on every player's production, according to the market. If he exceeds his salary in that dollar amount, Ceetar wins. I'm excited at the thought that we may be here at the end of Reyes' contract. Who wants to bet me with regards to Joey Votto's contract?
  14. Will they take Bay? Will they take Bonilla? He certainly will have some spots of 2011-like success going forward, but theyll grow-fewer and further apart. I'd love to have him back, if the salary thing can be adjusted. Else, the ship has sailed.
  15. Well, many of Peralta's teammates are still around --- his catchers, for instance.
  16. Joel Peralta ejected for being caught with foreign substance in his glove last night. He should expect a suspension. The real story is the sideshow, as Joe Maddon said some nasty shit about Davey Johnson for asking the umps to check on Peralta, the nicer parts of which amount to "Peralta was a Nat --- Johnson's hip; he knows what cooks." Which, to me, is interesting mainly in that it's a shorthanded way of Maddon admitting that he's hip and knows what cooks, and so possibly invites a suspension on himself (unlikely, but in our post-Bountygate world, who knows). It certainly invites derision. "It was a rumor that he liked a little pine tar," Johnson said. "I was hesitant to do it. Tim [Tschida] was looking at me kind of grinning. He said, 'What do you want?' I walked out and said, 'Why don't you check it, just to make sure. I'm curious.'? I heard a report on this morning's news radio that Maddon twice called Johnson's move "a coward move" and that tonight's lineup card exchange should be interesting. That sounded strong, so I checked some game reports online to read Maddon's actual words. "It was kind of a p***y move to go out there and do that under those circumstances. I like the word: p***y move." Gah! You can't make "p***y" equal "coward" no matter how hard you try to make it fit! That's the sort of thing that can get to a guy. Two more games left in this one. Nice to find out all these teams we've been playing recently had cheating cheaters playing for them.
  17. Lisa Martinez --- the only underhand knuckleballer known to baseball.
  18. Phil Niekro was the original manager of the Silver Bullets chick baseball team and his brother Joe the pitching coach. As many of their players came to them from the softball track, a few pitchers stuck with a sidearme to underhand motion. And considering her coaching, naturally one of them went with an underhand knuckleball. Crazy trying to get one of them over from 60 feet away.
  19. I'm certain it's not. It wasn't for Dickey. But making players never is. And it seems the big enemy to persisting with such a program is just that sad reality that it's easier emotionally to fail conventionally. I had a friend named Andrew who realized that nobody got laughed at on the basketball court for a missed shot unless it was an airball. It was a shortsighted epiphany, however, and during one game, he adpted a modus operandi --- to be certain to hit the rim with each shot, and so avoid peer derision. Fantastic bricks with no chance of success from their very conception would fly at the rim and clank back into play. It wasn't until the third such horizontal missile that everybody else on the court doubled over in laughter. Perhaps I was the only one, as failure-averse as I was, to know Andrew's true motivation, and everyone else thought he had just adopted an insane shooting technique. Andrew, furious that his scheme was backfiring, protested that he was hitting the rim! He was no worse than the rest of us chuckers routinely missing with our arcing shots. He sought to protect his status by pursuing what he saw as a conventional failure, and so sacrificed any possible chance at success.
  20. Well, yes. And knowing that the artist would typically try and portray accurately the colors a player is wearing, particularly knowing how important they are to the team and brand, I deigned to ask if this is truly representative of a hat the Giants once wore.
  21. The actor looked the part, if I recall correctly.

  23. Turns out, according to The Post that R.A. has a few disciples after all. R.A. and high schooler Stephen Orso during spring training.
  24. And Owen Wilson caught for the Giants in 1950? How did I not know this?
  25. No GM should put too much thought into deadline retooling, as he (or she, potentially) should hellbent be building a team where all the pieces are in place and a minor league system where all the reinforcements are ready, even in seasons where that's a fool's errand. That said (1) nobody knows more than a military leader that systems are volatile, and the best plans are the ones that allow for planning after the best plans break down, (2) Alderson explicitly said on several occasions that he was leaving room in the budget to potentially take on some degree of salary, if necessary, as the season progresses. (Although I suppose truth serum might tell me that that was just a small cover for his bosses being cheap and broke.)
