  1. Knapp runs pretty fast for a dude with a Jeff Kent mustache.
  2. Terry is scribbling up his scorecard, so here we are.
  3. Well, a wounded Céspedes. There goes our one healthy, non-catcher reserve.
  4. Granderson's Aprils are full of these deep drives that are filled with topspin. They jump off the bat but they end up diving into glove at the end of their ride.
  5. Kid in centerfield should have brought a glove.
  6. Welcome to 2017, Walkie.
  7. Franco is sort of a young Juan Uribe. Fat and unathletic, but he somehow gets around on stuff.
  8. A Granderson RBI single may have just been lost to the shift also.
  9. Rivera comes up against a pitcher getting wild and just chased two balls on the first two pitches.
  10. Zvon wrote: John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I thought the worst play in that inning was probably Cespedes. By no means an easy play but he made it look impossible. Bruce had some bad luck I agree. That's the 2nd time this week I've seen him give up on a fly ball over his head. Hauling ass seems to be a hassle with the guy. He just runs so violently when he's a top speed — like a tight end protecting the ball as linebackers bounce off of him — and I think he'd rather avoid it when he can.
  11. ...just not as a reflex with all hitters in all situations. As if that is an argument anybody is making. How about often enough to challenge defenses to abandon the shift? And ... another Conforto base hit dies in the shift.
  12. Cindy getting hit, but his defense is doing him no phavors.

  14. Good to get the team's pitching staff down to a more workable seven, and to have a top reliever back, but a bench with three wounded warriors and a third catcher is still a bench that's woefully short. Lagares may be their only real bullet for a night or two. A warm welcome to two mysterious new righthanders brought into the system. 15. If Duda is truly unavailable, and there's no transaction by gametime, the Mets go to town tonight with a ridiculously short bench of d'Arnaud, Flores, and Lagares. Go class of 13! right? And hey, if d'Arnaud is unavailable, we may be working with two benchies. We may see Gsellman at first or something similarly silly tonight.
  16. Go Terry, go! Day to day for now, but even three days gives the Mets some meaningful time to show what the Lagforto platoon in center can give you that maybe Granderson can't, with Grandy right next to them to compare.
  17. Chad Ochoseis wrote: When the defense virtually concedes the entire left side of the field to a lefty power hitter, it's not unreasonable to assume he should be able to bunt successfully for a hit 60% of the time, I don't think. And on this team, the next batter also has a good chance to be a power hitter, so we're not giving up the chance at a homer for a bunt, we're giving up the chance at a solo homer for a chance at a two-run homer, plus a chance for a one-run double, plus a chance for a single setting up a first-and-third-situation with a chance at a three-run homer ... Unless you are being walked to get to the pitcher, baserunners almost always make everything better.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: Yeah, but I don't want a power hitter bunting with 2 outs and nobody on. Bruce chose the right time to do it in a game last week and, yes, there are going to be others where it would help too. The other thing, of course, is that they have to be decent at bunting which I believe a NYM last was sometime during the Ford administration. Attempting those so-called 'gift' bunts only to fail at them is going to do nothing more than put struggling hitters into a hole with the count. I guess that's a theory, but I disagree. Your typical hitter is much better at taking a pitch outside of the strike zone when he starts a bunt than he is when he starts a swing. Bunting makes you more selective, and so is as likely to put you ahead in the count as behind. I can certainly list a dozen accomplished bunters since the Ford administration, but it's certainly a chicken-and-egg thing. How do we know who is and who isn't if nobody tries to do it? We do know that defenses are utterly and almost mockingly daring them to try—so far out of position that a popup in the air for perhaps 6.7 seconds last week wasn't caught—and that's the sort of posture that needs to be answered.
  19. It seems that team purchases these days aren't about who has the most smackeroonies, but who can best embody the league's interests, and so putting together a team represented by political connectedness, media connectedness, minority representation, and fan credibility seems to be the first aim, and ultimately the lion's share of the money is put up by the banks.
  20. Well, when you're getting one or two hits with no walks through five innings, I'm saying that the situation is very frequently advantageous.
  21. Can Jeb! be president and President Trump take over the Marlins?
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: You are daring a guy to surrender the best possible outcome of his turn at bat on the chance he winds up with a lesser one. The defense has to be willing to make that trade. Aren't you wiling to give up some home runs and the many outs it takes for to get them for improved on-base percentage? I mean, at some point? Don't you give up 100 points of slugging for 200 points of on-basing? I sure do. The question is, where the trade-off line is drawn and somebody (Walker!) wiling to test how many points bunting against the shift really adds. 'Til then, I'm living in theory. As for adjusting and swinging later, it's more a case of choking up and swinging less violently and with more control.
  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: He doesn't look injured, he looks messed up. As Keith pointed out swinging at balls and looking at strikes. Yeah, the bat-speed is there. The physique is there. It's the judgment that's bolloxed. It's something of a comfort that we've seen him look like this before. But perhaps not this deeply this long.
  24. Oh, I don't think they're bad at all. I just think their approach is ill-informed and their heads are not particularly in the game.
