  4. The purpose of Lobaton was to address the shortage of righthanded bats by being able to use Mesoraco and Plawecki at the same time. Now that have Frazier back, but Lobaton remains. Frazier had a .990 POS in three rehab games. Swarzak, though, was hit hard, giving up a 10.13 ERA in 2 2/3 innings. Las Vegas, man. 5. Who doesn't love the Orioles?
  6. Centerfield wrote: If we're doing nicknames, we just drafted Jarred Colonic. I'm calling him Bartolo.
  7. If he isn't Cortes the Killer, I'm retiring from the nickname business.
  8. Baseball is hard. Also, with amateurs playing mostly with aluminum bats, often on synthetic fields, they're largely playing a different game. That leaves a hole of speculation in the middle of even the most comprehensive scouting efforts. Lastly, I have to celebrate whenever any organization deviates from the prevailing philosophy, win or lose. Draft watchers always miss that, but it's fun.
  9. That Ron Hodges link is broke. Chuck was born in Shelbyville, where they let you marry your cousin.
  10. Besides, you can't help but be encouraged by that Justin Dunn start. Mets Roster Central is predicting a mid-season promotion to Binghamton. I also failed to mention that win included a two-homer game from baby-faced top prospect Andres Gimenez.
  11. It's a good news thread, man.
  12. They were. Not sure if they stayed friends after Dykstra interrupted both of their careers dramatically by bouncing his car off a couple of trees with DD in the passenger seat, while driving home loaded from John Kruk's bachelor party.
  13. Aaron Judge, batted nine times in yesterday's doubleheader, and struck out eight.
  14. Wow! I've got Final Four Fever!
  15. MFS62 wrote: Oh great. He "loves to swing the bat" on a home made field (because his town doesn't have one?) with friends and family pitching? So would I. And he hits lefty? Wonderful. Has he even batted against a lefty throwing a breaking ball? Ever? His ML comp is Mark Kotsay? I'll save you looking it up. Mark Kotsay was a career .276/ .332/ .404 hitter with a 96 OPS score. Oh. He's an outfielder. At least he's not a shortstop. (S/M = 94. I think it needs a tune up) But, the last time the Mets drafted a player with similar background (small town with no HS team, lefty hitter) it was Brandon Nimmo. That's worked out OK. So who knows? Later I think it's being misunderstood that his high school didn't have a team, and so he didn't play organized baseball, but learned the game playing sandlot ball. But that's not true at all. His high school did have a team. But they played a summer season and he was busy playing in more competitive leagues during the summer. His family didn't have a "home-made field." They helped build an 11-field, high-end baseball academy. He played against top competition from ambitious families from a young age and developed to the point where, by the time he reached high school, joining his school's team would have been a step backwards. He played with the USA baseball team and was their MVP in the Pan Am Games ... as a sophomore. Last year, he helped bring home gold with the under-18 squad in the Baseball World Cup. He was the first school boy chosen, and if he isn't the most projectable talent among high school seniors in the draft, he's almost certainly the farthest along.
  16. A foreshortened sweep today! The New York Mets ... had the day off! The Las Vegas 51s ... didn't wanna go to work! The Binghamton Rumble Ponies ... were not inclined! Work was the last thing on their mind! So this story begins with The St. Lucie Mets! Driving to Tampa in an El Dorado Grand, the Lucies matched up with their Yankee-affiliated opponents, and Justin Dunn was sublime. A wonder! An angel! Justy went seven innings, yielding no runs and just two hits. He walked one, struck out 10, and hit a batter, defusing the closest thing to a rally by striking out Hoy Jun Park with two on in the seventh. Dunn knows Jacob deGrom's pain though, and his team failed to break through until a single run the seventh, which was given right back by the pen in the bottom of the seventh. So it remained until the 10th when St. Lucie was given a free runner on second base, which they exploited to the tune of five runs home. Your final was Mets 6, Yankees 2. The Columbia Fireflies ... practiced trumpet all day long! And that would be all the organizational action ... up until two days ago! I tend to forget, but the Dominican Summer League starts a week or so earlier than the other short season leagues, as they don't have to wait for draft choices to round out their roster. The DSL Mets 1 opened with five in the top of the first and cruised against their Angels counterparts. They ultimately scored 15 runs on just 10 hits, none of which left the park. "How do you pull that trick?" you may ask. Well you may! I say, it helps when the opposition not only walks 10 of your batters, but commits 6 errors on top of that! Second baseman Juan De La Rosa led the assault going 1-1 with a triple and 3 walks. He was replaced mid-game in the cleanup spot by leftfielder Julio René, who himself went 2-2 with two doubles, that's a total of 3-3 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 walks, 3 runs and two rbi out of the fourth spot in the batting lineup. Can't ask for much more than that. The recently signed Joshua Corneilly was the last and best of a long line of pitchers, throwing 1 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings. Your final is Mets 15, Angels 6 Lastly The DSL Mets 2, who had the best winning percentage in the system last year, extended their 2018 record to 2-0, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits, helped along by — get this — 6 errors from the opposition. SIX! Leadoff hitter Felix Valerio helped the Mets dig out of an early 6-0 hole with the first Dominican homer for the Mets in 2018, and #2 hitter Federico Polanco went 4-5 with a triple, 3 runs, and 2 RBI. Antonio Villalba stopped the early bleeding with 2 1/3 shutout innings, but Jefferson Escorcha pitched the ninth, earning the save and the cool name award. Your final is Mets 11, Diamondbacks 9. ABBREVIATED ORGANIZATIONAL SWEEP![/bigpurple]
  17. I honestly couldn't tell when I was looking at Kevin McReynolds and when I was looking at Tom O'Malley. The Phillies are all noble about defending Tommy Herr, but he would be traded to those same Mets three weeks later.
  18. Why is Kelenic considered a cheap, underslot move?
  19. Mark your night off from 2018 Mets baseball by re-watching this August 9, 1990 brawl between the Phils and the Mets. It's not as celebrated as some other famed throwdowns of the era — he Knight vs. Davis show of 1986, the Jeffries-McDowell squareoff that technically happened after the season was over, or even the Braves-Mets fight that featured Charlie O'Brien trying to throw a noogie punch at John Cangelosi on the cover of Sports illustrated — but it's got a ton of action! The Mets were streaking toward a late-summer, too-little-too-late run at first place after Buddy Harrelson took over from Davey Johnson about a quarter of the way in. Brawls are nothing to celebrate kids, but it's 28 years later, nobody got seriously hurt, and it's a peek-a-boo into the human condition and the masculine Metsculine mystique. Let's re-watch. kSKU9cc5PwE Thoughts on the Fight! See how quickly Gooden responds and gets out there! And how inconsolable he is throughout the ordeal. It’s like Piazza vs. Mota. He doesn’t catch his breath and calm down. Several minutes in, he still has death in his eyes. Death!! Don’t wait for the vets. Mark Carreon enters the fray early and aggressively and pays for it by ending up under a lot of dudes. Dennis Cook’s got one awful, stringy mullet. Mullet McDowell trying to restrain Gooden. Go restrain your own dude, Roger. Dicky Thon and Howard Johnson have a brief bonding moment. Recall that it was Thon getting hit earlier in the game that precipitated this in part, and it was Thon getting hit by then-Met Mike Torrez six years earlier that prefaced his career going from All-Star level to utility journeyman level. Randy Marsh is a sweaty, sweaty ump, Randy Marsh is. Look how many people it takes, from both sides, to hold back Strawberry at 3:00. His reach is terrifying! Mackey Sasser goes ape shortly after that. Gooden always looked out for Mackey, telling the opposition that anybody who made fun of Mackey’s throwing kinks would eat one. And seriously, who the hell would want to be on Mackey Sasser’s bad side? I bet he had a long memory. Magadan ends up at the bottom of that scrum. Gooden looking fit during a sober period in between slip-ups, rocking a hard flat stomach. He was usually ripped in the limbs, but with a little Axl Rose-y beer gut. Not here. Teufel is not sure which guy to hit, but wants somebody. It’s a Cooter’s flashback for Tim. Speaking of Cooter’s, Ron Darling appears to not have a shirt on, and seems to have quickly thrown a warmup jacket on in the clubhouse while checking his tan torso out in the mirror. I think he inadvertently catches a Teufel elbow at one point, too. Mike Cubbage, that guy kept his head. He’s practically sleepwalking out there. “There’s Irish Mike in the middle of it. THAT doesn’t surprise anybody." Phillie announcers trading in ethnic stereotypes. Gregg Jeffies and his muscular butt walking like he’s trying to hold something in between his cheeks. Slo-mo time! Didn’t see him earlier, but Keith Miller is the first Met to the pile after Gooden and swan dived right in there. Herr (I think) comes in spikes first. Dirty play there, Tommy! Kelvin Torve wearing #24!!! WTF?!!! Strawberry was one of the last guys out there. Turned into one of the main combatants. Alejandro Peña has a tilde over then n in his name. That must’ve been one of the first appearances of such. On his warmup jacket, no less. Alex Treviño, too. The Phillies provided no such courtesy to Tom Ñieto. Toward the end, you see Dennis Cook leave the field infuriated. What you don’t see is that this is the fight during which he got famously slammed to the ground by Country Joe West. Ultimately both pitchers got tossed, with the Mets coming back against Phillie reliever Darrel Akerfelds, while Bob Ojeda picked up the win in relief for the Mets. Amazing to see so many 1993 Phils out there three years earlier while they still kinda sucked. By the time they reach the pennant, they would be the whitest, mullet-est, roidiest team ever. They frankly seem like they’re already pretty far down the road in all three categories, though.
  20. I think the "barrelling up" line is indicative. I see a lot of well struck drives not coming out as hard as they should be from a well-timed swing. He's pulling outside balls and hitting them partially off the end of the bat. Apart from recommending he bunt like a fiend, I'd also suggest he might consider moving a few inches closer to the plate.
  21. The point he made was about Ramos' extended time in that role, which isn't equivelant at all to Kevin Plawecki's time as a cleanup hitter. He's had both a far longer tenure and far more success, saves or no saves.

Ricardo Céspedes was an unproductive player in the minors last year for the Marlins and hasn't appeared in a game this year, having been held back in extended spring training. They may yet develop into gold, but I don't want to fall into the trap of thinking players the Mets have given up are great assets even it hasn't shown yet, while players the Mets have acquired aren't good at all if they haven't demonstrated it yet.

As yet, there's not much data at the big league level.
