I'm not cottoning to the Mets breaking the 14-man pitching staff ceiling. Why don't they see that the endless quest to add one more pitcher just means you get a worse pitcher, and that much less maneuverability in your lineup? Sorry to see P.J. Conlon lined up to get exposed to waivers. He was a feel-good story (to me, anyhow), even if he, you know, wasn't yet a pitch-good story. The addiction to relief is maddening. Somebody has to hit for those guys! It's not like they're going to use Robles today.

Read the thread, mofo! That's where you learned that Copeland was signed along with Vance Worley on April 19, as the team quickly cashed in their chips on the brief (but torrid!) A.J. Griffin relationship. After a short period in extended (Appalachian) Spring Training, he went to Bingo while Worley went to Vegas, but he prospered and got a trip out west which was blessedly brief.

Nice one! Looks like Colin has been rifling through Grandpa's old wardrobe: [fimg=350:1t90yf4x]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CtTRkuNUIAAudkG.jpg[/fimg:1t90yf4x]

Scott Copeland too.

Tim Peterson: 2012 draft choice, round 20, part of the new breed of Washingtonian Mets. A righthander, almost exclusively a reliever, who didn't show much in the short-season leagues, but came into his own the last three seasons, including a devastating 1.14 ERA over 55 1/3 innings for Bingo in 2017. ERA lies! But the peripherals support that he was pretty killer. And he's had shorter but equally eye-popping stretches of unhittability in St. Lucie and Columbia. Followed up last fall by going to Arizona and giving up a single run in 10 1/3 innings in the AFL. Gets his share of strikeouts despite below average velocity Or at least he used to. He picked up an 80-game PED suspension along the way, so maybe he's gassed that up a little. His ERA is in the mid-3.00s in Vegas, but (a) it's Vegas, and ( he's striking out 40% of his batters and walking only 5%, so he was gonna arrive one way or another. He doesn't have a particularly high ground ball rate, but he keeps the ball in the park. Beyond that, I don't know what you're gonna see, except that it's 6'1" and manly.

Also only one off the lead league in triples.

I'm not sure where you read that. Looking forward to seeing the 2018 launch of Lugo the Starter.

I also think he's clearly got more range than Conforto if slightly less juice in his arm. The idea that you don't want to move an established everyday player around causes teams (the Mets) to align their players against their better interests far too often. Also, they've been faking it in centerfield more often than not for years. They're faking it less if Nimmo is their centerfielder.

You're gonna get me in SO much trouble. Here's Scott Copeland, wife Hillary, and mancub Sutton, back when they were working for the New Orleans BabyCakes. Without viewing them side-by-side, I think Sutton looks a little like 1962 Mets baby.

Yeah, the upside to blowing multiple games is understanding that, hey, they were in a position to win every tame in this trip, except for the blowout. Now for the winning part.

The Columbia Fireflies won tonight with sort of a backwards deployment of their pitchers. Lefty Jake Simon, just off the disabled list, went the first 3 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, before yielding to Yeizo Campos to get the final two outs of the fourth inning. The Flies then turned the game over to Briam Campusano, who took them home over the final 5 shutout innings, giving up 1 hit, walking none, and striking out 5. Charleston was totally Briamed. Equally remarkable was the line put up Blake Tiberi. The six-foot, lefty-hitting second baseman (he DH'd tonight) went 1-1 with a single ... and walked 4 times. Blakie, despite hitting only .276, is the Brandon Nimmo of the South Atlantic League, leading the circuit in walks. In fact, the top of the OBP chart looks like this: Scott Manea, COL: .422 Jeremy Vasquez COL: .416 Laz Rivera, KAN: .406 Blake Tiberi, COL: .404 You stink, Laz Rivera! Excited as you might have been during the last update about the un-scored-upon-ness of Taylor Henry and Yeizo Campos, thrilled you must be now, as the two have combined for 17 2/3 innings and a 0.00 ERA. They've walked 3 and struck out 18 between them, and I don't know why Sally League batters even bother. The win was the fifth in the last six for the Lightning Bugs, and the eighth in the last 11, and it allowed the Fireflies to keep pace with the Lexington Legends — the two teams tied for third in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, five games behind the league-leading Augusta GreenJackets. Yup, and failing. Not that his swings looked much better. But good night, Mets.

Bautista. Really going with the backenders tonight.

Blurf. Learn how to bunt, Mets.

Shortstop covering second, and the third baseman in. Smash it to the left.

And he gets plunked!

Fonzie just got Nimmo to chase twice. Who does that?

Let's score seven to 10 here.

Conforto is not a good centerfielder. Nimmo is better.

Although he struggled more than not, I'm glad they were able to get a long appearance for Blevvie. Sometimes you need more than a batter here and a batter there to figure out what's going on with yourself. And being able to pitch with a four-run pad gave him a chance to switch things up that he doesn't get when he's throwing in high-leverage spots most nights.

I googled "finger injury" and just saw a bunch of pictures of Noah Syndergaard.

Great to see Rosario with the classick foot-first slide. It was a close play, though, and the Braves should challenge that call. Oh, right, they can't.

Know what I love? Whenever he fouls a ball off and it settles in the box or around the plate. Or whenever a ball pops away from the catcher. He corrals the ball with his bat, and plays a little hockey with it. He stick-handles it a couple of times while the catcher grabs at it futilely, and then he rakes it in to himself, picks it up, and tosses it to the ump, subtilely showing up the catcher while the pitcher looks on, in a manner that is plausibly innocent, but involves a little gamesmanship too. Did that tonight, and just while I'm admiring it, he cranks homerun #2.
