Fucking A. Go, Tim Healy.

I'm not sure what the appeal is of Chris Beck over, say, Drew Smith, but he reportedly comes on the recommendation of Mickey Callaway. The Mets haven't announced a corresponding move, giving at least half the team a chance to ponder their baseball lives as they fly to Arizona. "Guys, our flight is going to be making a stop in Las Vegas, during which time we'll be deplaning. If you don't hear your name now, you won't need to re-board." The only draft choice I've seen that has reported to have signed is first-rounder Jarred Kelenic, but that was a couple of days ago, and the Mets still haven't made an official announcement, but they have officially inked undrafted UMass-Lowell pitcher Andrew Ryan, so they've got that going for them. Which is nice. The Mets have claimed reliever Chris Beck off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox. After putting up ERAs north of six (SIX!) each of the last two seasons, it would be easy to call the newest Met a loser, and wonder why you don't kill him, but he was pitching wellish, if not well (4.14 ERA) so far this season. Big righthander who likes to rock a pedophile mustache. [fimg=500:dn90lebm]https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBpYan1.img?x=1&y=1&f=PNG&h=336&w=624&m=5&q=60&b=white[/fimg:dn90lebm]

Seven apiece!

Amazin' that the team hasn't been no-hit yet. They're doing a great job distributing their 2-5 hits evenly across every game.

In a big situation — close game and runners on — who is more dis-spiriting to see walk up to the plate? Bruce or Conforto? I figure if you're looking for a strikeout on a pitch up, Conforto's your man. If you want a soft liner off the end of the bat into the shift, go for Bruce. Gonzalez was the double play specialist. That position is currently open.

That's part of why I think the current issues are as much or more about deployment strategy as acquisition strategy.

This morning I suddenly remembered the Mets have a guy at AA named Yoenis Céspedes. He's 2-4 in two games so far with both of his hits being doubles. He's only played two innings in the outfield thus far.

Who are you?

Oh, come on, Bruce. Don't be a baby. Run to first.

Outstanding. Never saw the Mets turn a 1-2-5, and now I've seen it twice this season.

And now ball after ball falls in front of Conforto, where Lagares would be pocketing them. PLAY NIMMO IN CENTER!

Mets going down on the slider over and over.

And check it out, Bruce isn't outfielding like a sucker.

Sit down, Freddy! Wait a minute ... Wheeler has 99?!

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Ty Kelly riding the bench in the newly issued No. 66. That's the number I wear on all my softball jerseys. That's two weird, high numbers for Ty, after rocking 55 the first time around. If he sticks and gets a more traditional infielder's number, he might start moving toward McKnightville. Also, I think he's only the second Route 66-er after Josh Edgin. I like fun organ selections, but "Dominic(k) the Donkey" is (a) a Christmas song, and ( a really annoying song. There's one Lou Monte song that should be played in ballparks. Let's not get crazy.

The DSL Mets achieved no small feat in 2018. Their .704 winning percentage led the circuit, and the Dominican Summer League, which bloats with a total of 40 teams, in quite the robust circuit, and hey, not every team dilutes their talent across two squads. In fact, the only team near them, with a .690 winning percentage, were the DSL Mets 1. That's a tough act to follow under any circumstances — and harder still if the organization is pushing their talent toward the DSL 1 squad — and they haven’t quite gotten traction yet. A 10th-inning loss today dropped them to 5-4 two games out in the Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division. Another year means another Latin shortstop prospect. Some years it means two. Some of them float to second or third or even center by the time they make it, and some don’t make it at all. But Felix Valerio is looking like one honking good 17-year old. Playing shortstop and batting mostly out of the leadoff spot, Flex has ripped it at a .343 / .410 / .514 // .925 rate. The DSL is notoriously low power, and a 17-year old slugging .500 anywhere (he has three doubles and a homer through 8 games, not counting today) is a rarity. You want a starting pitcher? How about Jurgen Jiminez. The first name says he’s from Curaçao and the last name says he’s from the Dominican, so of course, he’s from Venezuela. His stat line says he has a 1.00 ERA through two starts (nine innings), but he’s also 22 and in his fourth DSL season, so he’s a good bet to be heading to Brooklyn or Kingsport as soon as their seasons begin. I’m guessing the latter. Working out of the pen is Juan Martinez. Juanito has given up only one run in 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10 along the way, and holding opposing suckers to a .158 batting average. Look for him in Brooklyn soon. But hey, Juan Martinez is something of a bullshit generic name. I hear you there. But for those Charlie Finley types who want a little lightning in a name, how about Jefferson Escorcha?! Def Jeff brings it from the portside, likes to capture a moment tastefully in black-and-white, has given up one run in 4 2/3 relief innings, and is only 18. But with a name like that, he’s bound to come quick. [fimg=450]https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2018/06/jefferson-escorcha.jpg[/fimg] New manager Yucary De La Cruz is, like 27, and looks younger. I have a picture of him because he was a prospect himself, like, last week. He's got some veteran coaches to support him, but like the players, it's going to take me a bit to find photos of 'em all. Was June 2010 the Month of Elmer?

The name that always kills me to see pop up at the end of the month is ELMER DESSENS. If you ever think you're going through a bullpen crisis, recall that there was a time that he was our best reliever.

Well, that's just one terrible downside of the anti-trust exemption and territorial exclusivity. It insures teams against failure, ultimately incentivizing it to some extent. It's a lousy exploitative system that should not be tolerated. But because it's largely the only one we've ever known, we tolerate it.

Maybe they did, but didn't offer any compensation up to the Mesoraco level. Or maybe they did offer talent that was just as good or better, but the Mets were hesitant, thinking that if Harvey found his way back to his north star, they didn't want him doing it cross-town. I'm sure they'd've overpaid for top shelf Matt Harvey. Anyhow, the Mets needed a catcher and got one.

While I found Ray to mostly be an unfortunate scapegoat, I found it real weird that they just promoted his assistant to replace him. If you really believe the injury rate can be traced to him, wouldn't you want to make a clean break, let go of his underlings too, and hire an all-new staff with an all-new philosophy?

Those are worthy winners for a big wet soppy blanket of a month. Worthy breakthroughs by Nimmo and Lugo. Worthy all-time crowns for deGrom and Flores.

A veteran of 225 big league games, most successfully as a Brave, and potential lefthanded help for the bullpen. Was killing it in the PCL this season, when he got called up by the Angels and sent down after a single inning. He exercised his veteran's right to instead declare himself a free agent, because he obviously wanted the opportunity to be a Met.
