Look at that defense. All Bruce needs to do is bunt. He'd be safe nine times out of 10. He's not in a big slump. Everybody's flooding into the right centerfield gap where he hits it.

Gary: It should be the last time the Mets go with a three-man bench. Edgy: Ever?

Nuttin'.

And he goes down talking movies.

And a momento grande here, as the bases load with one out for that Bautista guy.

David Wright in the house tonight.

It's so hazy, that in the long shots, it's hard to tell who is in the field. Both teams look like they are wearing gray.

Gary: José Bautista, who is probably the hottest batter in the lineup since he arrived, is hitting out of the three-hole. Edgy: NIMMO has been the hottest batter in the lineup!

A replay call before the first pitch? Did Mickey screw up the lineup card again?

Luis Guillorme is looking like our thirdbaseman for the time being. And Amed Rosario is trying to sneak up the batting order. Keith too. But I understand a little. You get a veteran player like that in and you're expecting something like Adrian Gonzalez. Big arms and veteran guile, but a slow bat and no wheels. That he still has a flat stomach, bat speed, and athleticism is an interesting surprise. Of course, Reyes still has some great whip in his bat, but his approach is all bolluxed up, so that only gets you so far. Remember how excited Keith was when the Mets got Juan Uribe, to see the violence that fat guy could still unleash in his swing? Proof is in the pudding, but they probably needed a fourth outfielder one way or another.

Offseason worries.

I hope they get India inked.

They’ll have to find a new pooch in the ‘Cuse. VNxVrUq6XiQ But the Chinese character for “crisis” is a combination of “danger” and “opportunity.” I don’t know if that’s actually true or just some motivational speaker claptrap, but when you look at danger, look no further than the curious case of Andrew Church. Churchie, the Mets’ second-round pick back in 2013, was pitching kind of rotten for Binghamton (1-5, 6.44), but the Mets’ needs created an updraft, and he got himself a ticket to Vegas to get his first start in AAA. His first appearance was on the road in Sacramento, where he distinguished himself with five innings of one-run ball. A native of Hendersonville, NV, AC was excited to take the mound in front of family and friends at the stadium where he grew up falling in love with baseball, and he did what most pitchers do when the first step on the hill in Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League, he absorbs a vicious beatdown, yielding five runs on seven hits in four innings. “Tough deal, Churchmouse,” you might say. “Chalk it off to experience and get back at it tomorrow.” But Andrew saw it differently. He looked in the mirror, thought about the sad, little backwater that Binghamton could be when school was out, and said to himself, “I can’t go back. I won’t go back.” He walked into his manager’s office and announced his retirement. I hear you, AC. Who needs this shit, yo-yo-ing between levels, for chicken-feed pay? Church has a young bride and an infant child he hadn’t seen for months, and chasing the dream wasn’t for him anymore, when he was missing the dream that had come true at home. Best wishes to you, Churchman. Where the opportunity appears is in the bat of Kevin Kaczmarski. In a system lacking outfield bats in the upper levels, Kevo received a big-league Spring Training invitation this year, but then, due either to injury or professional strategy, was held back in the professional limbo of Extended Spring Training, and didn’t have his season launched until mid-May. But man, he did a week in St. Lucie and then hit Las Vegas like a Panzer blitz KK struck out as a pinch hitter in his first appearance, but in the five games since he has started and hit. And hit and hit, racking up 12 hits and a pair of walks in five games, waking up this morning with a .529 / .545 / .706 // 1.251 line that is small-sample- and PCL-related, but still boner-inducing. Kacz led off yesterday, going 4-5. In another universe, he might have had a callup. But here in our universe, the Mets needed a right-handed bat, and called on Tony Bautista. Hey, speaking of left-handed outfielders, Matt den Dekker (little d) has been hitting all season long. With power too. His eight homers have helped him to a .300 / .342 / .512 // .854. He too has already been called up in some alternate time lines. He also still looks like a sad angel. The 51s take on the Reno Aces tonight, with nominal ace Chris Flexen matching up against the always-dangerous TBD, as Las Vegas looks to regroup from their position 10.0 games out in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division, aka DFL. He looked in the mirror, thought about the sad, little backwater that Binghamton could be when school was out, and said to himself, “I can’t go back. I won’t go back.” He walked into his manager’s office and announced his retirement. I hear you, Andy. Who needs this shit, yo-yo-ing between levels, for chicken-feed pay. Church has a young bride and an infant child he hadn’t seen for months, and chasing the dream wasn’t for him anymore, when he was missing the dream that had come true at home. Best wishes to the Churchman. Lucie and then hit Las Vegas like a Panzer blitz. KK struck out as a pinch hitter in his first appearance, but in the five games since he has started and hit — and hit and hit — racking up 12 base hits and a pair of walks in five games, waking up this morning with a .529 / .545 / .706 // 1.251 line that is small-sample- and PCL-related, but still boner-inducing. Kacz led off yesterday, going 4-5. In another universe, he might have had a callup by now. No matter how well you think you set things up, there are 29 other teams and the Devil out there trying to fuck your shit up. La stagione è lunga e dura.

I just wrote a long, brilliant, illuminating update on the Las Vegas 51s. Imagine Shirley Povich-quality stuff filling this space. You would have laughed and cried and then wondered if you'd ever read its like again. But my connection blurped out when I hit submit and it was gone when I backed up.

I'm sorry about Mullin's S, but 1967 is still the gold standard and I'm voting for it the whole way unless you put it up against the Ocean Rain cover or Aja or something like that.

He's only gotta bounce until Céspedes is ready. Then he either hangs on as the fifth outfielder, or he don't, depending on how he's doing. What surprised me is that he's still got an athletic body.

Yeah, they were ahead in seven of eight. And they're still within spitting distance. Nothing that can't be righted. Not sure I particularly follow Callaway's mindset at all, but there's nothing that can't be righted. And this road trip can be remembered as (among other things) the period when Brandon Nimmo made it clear that he was for real.

Considering that he was 5 for 40 with the Braves, I feel like the Mets picked their pocket.

Suzuki seems to give his pitcher a target outside the strike zone on every pitch.

It's great to see Nimmo and Rosario in the middle of everything tonight. That triple by Rosario earlier was the first time I saw him running 100% out of the box like that. Wow.

Best game of his Mets career so far.
