I'm getting a lot of adoptee heartbreak.

Known here in Baltimore as a pitching coach and scout, more than as a rare member of both Pirate championships over the O's. That last line is crazy. I totally would have signed with the Mets following the 1979 season.

No, that's not what I meant to suggest.

I wanted fewer pitchers and more batsmen, but Lobaton wasn't what I had in mind. Two guys on the DFA list at once kind of sums up the roster volatility, but I reckon that the Mets' brass isn't making calls about them at all, but hopes to slip both through waivers. The wailing and lamentations you heard coming up from Florida was centered in the Fort Myers region, where the host Miracle lost both ends of a double-header to the visiting St. Lucie Mets. One of the games was a continuation of a May 19 started contest, so they only played the last few innings, of thetooth-and-nail 3-2 job. The winning pitcher Joseph Zanghi, who threw 3 2/3 scoreless out of the pen, wasn’t even with the team. Z (with his microscopic ERA) had been promoted earlier in the week to Las Vegas where he picked up a three-inning save earlier in the week. In Game Two, a 6-3 triumph, Gabriel Llanes got a no-decision but pitched six innings of one-run ball, striking out seven and leaving with the lead. That second game featured the invulnerability of catcher Dan Rizzie. Double-Z, has he is known to nobody, went 4-4 and pegged the only pitiable fool who attempted to steal on him. Running on Rizzie is NOT for the faint of heart. Somebody who did steal successfully was Andres Gimenez, his shameless theft pimping out a résumé that also included two 2-4 days in the double header. The baby Venezuelan shortstop has now improved his line to .292 / .361 / .435 // .795 in a Florida State League where he is three and a half years younger than the average player. Lest their be any doubts, that’s a team-leading figure in the offense-starved league. Also, who says microscopic ERAs don’t get relievers anywhere? This week, Matt Pobereyko (o.95) and the preciously mentioned Joseph Zanghi (1.44) got tickets to Las Vegas, and Ryan Ryder (1.77) was shipped to Binghamton. Best wishes to those boys, as Matt Blackham (1.99) takes over as bullpen ace. The sweep puts the 22-25 Mets within a half game of the fourth-place Charlotte Stone Crabs in the Florida State League South Division. They take on the miracle again today with Hard-Luck Harol Gonzalez taking the bump. Harol is winless in three decisions, despite a 3.15 ERA over 34 1/3 innings. Don't swing Rosario. Take a strike. Maybe take two.

True enough. Not sure what the three catchy thing is. Add a hitter.

Conforto is vulnerable up and has been all year, but Plawecki didn't even swing at strike three right down the pipe.

Keeping the line moving. Crooked Hat, just come on back, if you ever wanna try again!

That's it. Take the walk. Let this crooked hat beanbag beat himself.

Not Sewald's night. Should have gone to Familia in the seventh.

Hey, I'm real glad that he pitched late-ish into the game. But I'm less concerned that they let Wheelie down than they let down a house full of Met fans and another million watching at home.

Yeah, this inning suckz boogies, but I was happy to see Cabrera standing up to Heyward.

I don't care if the starter gets a win on his record. I care if the team does. And there goes the lead.

And the runner scores on a drive to the track, but if he was on first, Nimmo would have been in a no-doubles position and might have gotten to Zobrist's double.

Anybody still considering Conforto, I submit that throw we just saw as exhibit 1 in favor or Conforto. Put him in a corner and tell him to hit.

A hit-and-run works perfectly (I can't remember the last time the Mets pulled this), but it's probably it for Wheeler, but it's beautiful to see a starter working into the seventh.

The stadium played "Brother Louie" as walkup music for Guillorme. [youtube:q1mm8urh]vJiUwGy1sKc[/youtube:q1mm8urh]

Yeah, I think that tri-homer game was a remembered because it was the final Sunday of his career. That was a big deal as it was consistently and easily the biggest crowd of the week, even though there was no Sunday baseball in many cities when he first came up.

No. If that was the intent, the cost-benefit ratio would be very high.

You have Nimmo and Conforto in the lineup. You're committed to that much. Who do you put in center, while butting the other one over to a corner?

I tell you now that everywhere I go in my great Fifth District of Indiana, people ask me, "Congressman, what's your stance on Wheeler-Chatwood?" I say "I'm for it, of course!" Then they say to me, "Then what's taking those fat cats in Washington so long to enact this much-needed fuel-additive legislation?!" That's not me talking, mind you, but good, hard- working Americans from the Indiana Fifth. For those good people, and for all the good, decent patriots in your own home districts, I exhort this distinguished Congress toward swift passage of Wheeler-Chatwood with no more amendments! I, for one, did not come to Capitol Hill to sit on my thumbs! I yield the rest of my time!

I heard Wheeler Chatwood took Mary Ellen Ainsworth for a ride in his buggy up by Fiddler's Grove and they created a chain of backfence gossip stretching clear across the county.

I don't particularly have a concern for the bullpen. Pulling a pitcher after four innings when he's throwing a shutout against the second-best-hitting team in the league and replacing him with a succession of pitchers from the back end of your staff is a losing strategy all day, every day. As is insisting on hitting into the shift, and not telling Rosario a strike when you're down four in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, and the tying run is on deck.

The Ponies came out on the wrong side of a slugfest yesterday, falling 11-10 to the Erie Seawolves. Starting pitcher Joseph Shaw was puzzlingly left in to give up 10 runs in his 6 1/3 innnings. Adonis Uceta went the final two, ultimately taking the loss by giivng up a solo homer. Jeff McNeil continued his redecorating campaign in the Eastern League during the carnival of offfense, going 3-for-5, raising his line to a pants-bulging .317 / .394 / .641 // 1.034. That last number is fourth in the league, behind only teammate Pete Alonso and two of New Hampshire´'s Hall of Fame offspring, Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. McNeil's magical May included a .340 batting average, a .407 on-base percentage, eight homers, and 27 RBI. The loss ended a three-game winning streak and a six-of-eight run, bumping the Ponies within five games of first in the Eastern League Eastern Division. The 10-run showing was pretty impressive since they did it with Alonso on the bench, the day after he went 3-6. The big Floridian settled in in May, going .284 / .425 / .510 // .935, which is impressive in any context, but comes after a .408 / .505 / .776 // 1.282 April, so, yeah, he'll get your glands going. Also burning down the mission in May was reliever Daniel Zamora. The southpaw bounty the Mets got in a trade at the start of 2017 when they sent Josh Edgin to the Pirates gave up but one run in 10 1/3 innings in the Month of Maia, striking out 15 and WHIPping at 0.97. Yeah, it's AA, but the future is wide open, and "hope" begins with Z. The Rumblers host the first place SeaWolves this weekend, with a double header kicking off the proceedings tonight. Josh Prevost, 4-1 with St. Lucie, makes his AA debut in the first game. It's Taylor Swift-Themed Fireworks Night. TRY to stay away.
