Is Lugo staying in, or do the Mets just not trust any pinch-hitters?

If reaching the warning track was the goal, Bruce is having a heck of a homestand.

Win this game for us, Reyes.

Mickey, for Pete's sake, forget your artificial pitch limit on Lugo and get as much as you can out of him.

I always forget that the Dominican Summer League starts before the other short season leagues. I guess because they don't need the draft to help fill out their roster, they can get a jump on everybody else. The 2017 DSL Mets 1 won at such a prodigious rate (44-27, .620) that they'll be hard-pressed to top last year's results no matter how well the 2018 squad does. You've got to not just be good, but have some luck on your side, and with a 3-4 record, while Pythagoras thinks they should be 5-2, well, luck has a way of evening things out. They have more than a few players returned from last year's squad, and almost everybody on last year's squad did really well (thus, the record), so I imagine a bunch of them are only back for a handful of games, getting sharpened up for a few weeks before joining the Gulf Coast Mets, the Kingsport Mets, or the Brooklyn Cyclones. DSL-ers get Sundays off, but the Mets 1 won (see what I did there?) yesterday, and did so handily, downing the Latin American teenagers of the DSL Twins, scoring in each of the last five innings. Rookie Cesar Loaiza took the win with 3 1/3 shutout innings across the middle of the game, giving up three hits and a walk, but striking out four to keep the Twins off the board. Cesar is currently killing it to the tune of a 1.59 ERA. I come to praise him, not to bury him. Currently rocking a roster of 33, 57.5% of the DSL Mets 1 are not actually Dominican(!), with the team currently fielding 15 Venezuelans, 2 Colombians, and 2 more players form Curacao. While DSL kids rarely have much power yet (2 homers thus far), the team has been otherwise burning down the house with their bats, with two players (catcher Andres Rgnault and shortstop Malvin Nuñez currently batting over .400, and five more batters coming in with averages over .300. Regnault, part of all Venezuelan catching staff for the team, is currently 14th in the league in OPS at 1.241, while throwing out 44.4% of would-be base-stealers. Second-year pro Felix Sosa mostly struggled in his first season with the team, but so far in 2018, he has had one start, in which he has thrown five innings of no-hit shutout ball. I'd be tempted to shut it down right there, but expect to see Felix in the stateside leagues soon enough if he can build on that start at all. Curacao native Nelmerson Xavier Angela (he uses all three names) has been the top reliever so far, throwing five innings out of the pen, giving up just one un-earned run on two hits, while walking none and striking out five. The season continues tomorrow against those same Twins, as the Mets 1 try to close the gap on the DSL Nationals, who sit three games ahead of the Mets 1 in first place in the Dominican Summer League South Division. If you're referring to my nursing home quip, I apologize. To me, those three mentioned are nothing more than place-holders and guys who wouldn't start on 15/16ths of the other MLB teams. I'm ready to see some younger place-holders get a shot (and an opportunity to face some MLB pitching) since the season seems to be in the crapper already this 10th day of June 2018. No, I was referring to pinch-hitting Bautista for Conforto.

Justin Dunn's first start today at AA: IP: 7.0 H: 2 R: 0 ER: 0 BB: 4 SO: 9 HR: 0 Pitches: 98 Strikes: 57 Let one or two too many guys get away from him, but apart from that, you've got to be encouraged. That's a game score of 79!

Wow, it is. See you tonight. Lineup may only be regular funky.

The Mets try and stave off sweepage in a Sunday afternoon intracity matchup, sending Seth Lugo to the bump against Luis Severino. Severino has had himself a season, checking in at 9-1. Lugo, though, holds the lower ERA, 2.04 to 2.20. It's Sunday, so the lineup may be a little funky.

Yeah, that was something. In fact, it might have been doing something. Although taking a potshot and praying for blind luck to come around isn't exactly the top of the "something" list.

Gary Cohen can't pronounce "Nachos BelGrande."

That's the lineup of a desperate, desperate man.

The sacrifice fly that scored Lt. Tanaka last night: would a typical throw from Nimmo get the runner there? How about Conforto? How about the homerun by Gardner? It looked like hit off the top of the fence. Does Nimmo get back and have a chance on that? Bruce had pulled up looking for the carom.

I doubt it.

I have a win?!

We haven't visited Firefly Theatre in a bit. Let's check in! A strong start by Anthony Kay (one run in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 7 while walking 2). His effort was a big help as the Fireflies bested the Augusta GreenJackets, with Carlos Hernandez picking up the win, and Stephen Villines the save throwing scoreless work the rest of the way. Hernandez also stranded two runners he picked up. Catcher Ali Sanchez went 2-3 with a double and the game-breaking two-run homer in the eighth, ultimately plating three runs. The real story in Columbia, though is being written by Quebeçois outfielder Raphael Gladu. The Firefly leadoff hitter went 2-4 last night, extending his team record hitting streak to a jaw-dropping 22 games. Je ne fais que des lancers pour frapper et obtenir de très bons coups sur la balle", explique Gladu. "Honnêtement, c'est aussi simple que ça, mais je suis heureux d'aider l'équipe de toutes les façons possibles." He has raised his batting average 67 points during his streak, and his prospect status at least as much. Native Floridian Joe Cavallaro, meanwhilst, just keeps turning in good start after good start. His last one was good-plus though. After missing a turn with a stressed fluffernutter, Joe took the hill against the Charleston RiverDogs, giving up two runs in seven innings, striking out 9 and walking 0. While it was a no-decision, he now enjoys a 6-1 record with a 2.26 ERA. Run, Joe, run. All this adds up to a .500 record, however, with the Flies sitting at 29-29, six games out of the South Atlantic League Southern Division. But they take on the first-place Jackets again today, with a red-hot David Peterson (1.93 ERA) takng the bump. The team also has enjoyed a period of relative stability, as the higher leagues have been replenished from the stockpile of extended spring training, rather than drawing from the Fireflies. Josh Prevost gave a leadoff single to Lakeland Tigers leadoff hitter Cam Gibson. It turned out that he just hadn't taken enough warmup pitches. Sufficiently loosened, Josh bore down on the next hitter, got the out, and kept going, ultimately pulling an R.A. Dickey, setting down the next 27 Tigers in a row for a virtual perfect game. Prevost stuck out nine Tigers, including the last, and walked (obviously) none. The 2014 fifth rounder out of Seton Hall improved his ledger to 5-1. Josh got hit hard in his one start with Binghamton this year, but he's surely going back soon. Time to unlock your Twitter account, Josh. The papers want to know whose shirts you wear. Congratulations.

Not to sound like a broken record, but when you see the pitcher's legs have stiffened up, don't you bunt on him then?

See! Even swinging bunts work!

Please take a strike, Cabrera.

Abad never signed with the Mets, despite reports that he had. Meanwhilst, Wright, Céspedes, Familia, and Syndergaard all out sounds a lot like where the Mets were along about the first Yankee series last year. Man, Stanton. I feel like this is a situation that Swarzak should be in.

Man. Has deGrom even been behind all year?
