    The Mets could have put Baty or Mauricio up there, or just let him swing with the hope that his speed would keep them out of the double-play. Sacrificing the out is nothing compared to sacrificing the man by not teaching him how to bunt right.

    Will Sammon of The Athletic is reporting (and Steve Drumwright of this site is echoing) that the Mets have hired former Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey for a non-specified front office role under David Stearns. Falvey comes from the talent evaluation side of the game. He made some savvy moves in Minnesota, but was criticized for a fire sale last summer that he executed under some duress, and he left the organization in January. Falvey knows how to rock the on-the-field-in-a-half-zip-with-a-takeout-cup-of-coffee look, which, to my reckoning, is half the job of a modern, big-shot baseball executive. Well done! Falvey played for Trinity College in Massachusetts, graduated with an economics degree, and got started in baseball by scouting the Cape Cod League independently, which is an impressively rogue way to get started. You wanted new voices? You got one!

    More specifically, they all had easily overlooked late-career tenures with the Rangers for reasons known only to themselves and God. Your clarification would be pretty close to true, if the list included Rusty Staub.

    I think they are contractually bound to fill the spot with somebody. Christian Pache is somebody.

    Gamel got plenty of use compared to Pache. He was used every day for the first week or so of his tenure, and then it tapered off in a natural way. But he was a Met mid-season. Pache is here in September when they have more guys than they could use. While I'm rooting for him to get off the bench every night, his skill set is pretty similar to Nick Morabito's, so that when one of their skills is needed, they are almost always going to go for younger guy they are trying to develop, while Pache cools his heels. They probably would do better using that roster spot for a third catcher.

    Of course, you're rarely going to get a player going on record with "Ugh! Three more years of this guy!"

    Restores the Gil Hodges tradition of the Mets drawing their managers from their roster of former players, even if his qualification for this category is only slightly more than technical.

    Ewing is rightfully safe after review, but that doesn't change the fact that he got caught with his pants down. And after burning the last challenge on a ball completely in the zone, it's been a rookie inning for the guy.

    Keith seemed to be sleepwalking through the last series, but nothing animates him like bad fundies.

    By the way, if you back it up to that sacrifice "fly," Alvarez didn't touch home plate.

    Maybe I've seen a weirder sac fly at some point in my life, but I can't think of it. Maybe in Prep League.

    I don't know what's the greater gift — their defensive miscues or that they're the only team in the league that pitches Alvarez down.

    Mr. Greenjeans seems pretty committed to a pure platoon of Baty and Vientos. Which could certainly be a productive thing, until an injury turns them both back into fulltimers, like Polanco's did this season.
