I would disagree that he arrived with high expectations. He arrived with some reasonable hope to be better than he has been, to be sure. But the trade was less a big bet on him than it was a bet against Nimmo (and Nimmo's contract). The Mets are certainly losing that bet, but I certainly don't remember anybody saying, "Man, I'm expecting big ol' things from Semien — bank on it." I think the worst season for a secondbaseman in Mets history is clearly a tough call, as we do not have the data to compare defensive contributions fairly across time, but my money goes on Sandy Alomar, Sr., who played in only 15 games but gave them a season's worth of setbacks.

I'm mentally encouraging the Mets to reach out to Reid Brignac. He manages Binghamton to a 90-46 record in 2025, which should put him on the short list for big-league managerial openings, but rather than give him a higher-profile job, like bouncing him up to Syracuse or maybe a coaching spot on the big-league staff they were turning over anyhow — the sort of thing that might tell a guy you notice him — they let im walk. And he end up in Tampa as an assistant coach in AAA, which isn't really a better situation. Reach out, Mets!
