  1. I have no memory of this McCarthy guy as a Yanqui ... (looking it up) 14 starts in 2014 with a 7-5 record and sub-3.00 ERA
  2. 2nd inning update: - Gsellman is on pace to need 270 pitches in order to finish the game - and the game itself is on pace to last 3:45 (aka: ten minutes to two AM) or maybe more like 3:35 since the Dodgers most likely won't have to bat in bottom 9 Other than that it's going OK though
  3. Damn, I didn't see that inning. The Angels hit for the cycle while scoring 3 in the 7th, all but the single off of Clippard. That's now seven in a row, and all against LAA (4) & OAK (3)
  4. Tonight's 1st inning epitomizes everything about what our opening defensive frames have been this season: - almost every ground ball finds a hole - those grounders that don't find holes become errors anyway - throw in a walk or two - potential GiDPs aren't turned - the pitcher in immediate pitch-count hell - and, of course, 1st inning bomb(s)
  5. [fimg=100:aj2r8y70]http://d3k2oh6evki4b7.cloudfront.net/req/201706013/images/headshots/c/c6c7d8ef_davis.jpg[/fimg:aj2r8y70] Cloyd Boyer was the least known of the three Boyer brothers having pitched in parts of five ML seasons during the 1950s. However, unlike his younger and more famous big league brothers Clete and Ken, Cloyd is still around at the age of 89

The whole 'Johnson Killer' rep was a classic example of a first impression based on a small sample size lasting far beyond its sell-by date as it was based entirely on a five AB stretch over two games in 2000 where he went: Double, Ground-Out, Double, HR, Double. The problem is, other than those two games he had 5 singles and a double in 38 trips. In total he wound up a more than respectable .250 career vs Unit, but it was essentially two games whence this whole rep stems.
  7. McEwing's lone HR off of the Big Unit was the 10th of his career 25
  8. Gary: "And the Mets will get the tying run to the plate" I'll take 'Phrases I never thought I'd hear tonight' for $800 Alex
  9. Be a good idea to beat up on whoever comes in to try and pitch the 7th & 8th because, among other attributes, the Dodgers have maybe the best closer in the bigs. Jansen: 0.91 ERA; 0.57 WHiP; Batters Faced = 107 - Ks = 50; Earned Runs allowed = 3

  11. How cool is it for Cecchini that, for the remainder of his like, he gets to answer 'Clayton Kershaw' to the question about who he hit his first ML HR off of? (in only his 9th ML AB btw).
  12. The last time Kershaw gave up more than 4 runs in any game was April of 2016, his 5th start of last year.
  13. So what 3 HRs off of Kershaw means is that if Wheeler had merely slightly sucked tonight this would be a real nice game here.
  14. One wonders if it being a "pressure's off" kind of situation is a reason for the "new" Rafael? It seems to me that we've seen this type of mini-success with him before in limited samples but then when he's asked to run with it he flops miserably.
  15. Justin Turner, now in his 4th year as a Dodger: .307/.376/.496; 53 (now 54) HRs in 1,400 ABs He was .265/.326/.370 as a Met (814 ABs)
  16. Allowing base-stealing -- even with the caveat of not leaving the base until the ball hits the catcher's mitt -- seems a bit misguided for that age group. Kids that age can run a lot better than they can do almost anything else. I can't say as how I can remember for sure, but it seems to me that stealing wasn't part of the game until more like age 13 or so.
  17. At some point in the future, historians are going to be scratching their heads wondering why the record from this game shows a left-hand hitter pulling a ball into a 5-6-3 GiDP
  18. In other NL East news: -- Nats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in Miami tonight but wind up losing 8-7 on a walk-off Marcel Ozuna single, although this was mostly starter Roark's doing (gave back all six runs in bottom 3) rather than the usual suspect bullpen. -- Braves thumping the Giants 9-0 in the 8th after putting up a seven spot in bottom 7th
  19. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit chugging warm vodka straight out of the bottle.
  20. The way Jose is hitting these days I think he can break that tie within the next three or four weeks easily.
  21. The Yanx version of the hot young SS prospect -- Gleyber Torres, part of the Chapman booty from last year's deadline deal with the Cubs -- is out for the remainder of the season and probably some of next year too due to impending TJ surgery. It's on his non-throwing arm so that may shorten the rehab some and not kill his chances at a career on the far side of the diamond. But the unusual part of the whole thing is that he tore the ligament via a slide into home. I don't think I've ever heard of that before as the cause of a torn elbow UCL
  22. Not to worry, the game will be over before 1:00 Oh wait, a 10:10 start these days is as likely to last until 1:50 as it is to be over by 12:50
  23. The team is going to have to make a decision -- maybe in the next six weeks, definitely in the next six months -- on Duda OR Smith. Unless of course they opt for 'Neither'. Both certainly isn't an option since both are LH bats who play nowhere other than 1B, and Not Yet on Smith only works if Duda agrees on a one-year only contract at the age of 32 on the brink of his first shot at FA-gency. One could argue that Walker chose that exact route last year although he was a year younger, plays a less easily filled position, and the team had no obvious replacement behind him. A quick glance at the contenders, though, and there's nobody who *needs* a Duda-type right now. MAYBE Boston if Mitch Moreland's foot injury lingers. Greg Bird is constantly hurt, Chris Carter suxxx, and Matt Holiday needs to DH. Duda for OF prospect Clint Frazier. You've got an hour to get back to us Cashman.
  24. After taking the first game of their seven game west coast road trip, the Yanx dropped the final six in Anaheim & Oakland. They weren't getting killed in the games -- lost by 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, and 1 including twice via walk-offs -- but 1-6 is 1-6 no matter how you slice it and they lost several of those after holding leads. Also it's not like the A's and Angels are world beaters these days, and Tanaka continues to get raked. Sawx can tie them for the AL East lead if they beat Houston tonight.
  25. Keith is coming off knee surgery, the machine feeds a wrap that covers his repaired hinge. Either that or he just likes to keep his cool.
