  1. So now that mgmt decided that tens of millions of dollars needs to be dumped into revamping the pitching staff, when do they figure out that the offense and defense are worse than the pitching? Three plays not made have led to all three runs, and we have 4 hits thru 7 innings against a washed up pitcher with a 6.00 ERA on one of the worst teams in the last decade.
  2. So we've found something this Mets team does well, they're leading the league in getting hit in the face by pop-ups. And both times it's cost us a run(s).
  3. At the deadline, the trading deadline the Leone is dealt tonight - ooh, ooh, ooh ...
  4. Edgy MD wrote: "Nothing coming in the farm system" is the sort of dime-store prognostication that nobody has ever felt the urge to be accountable for two years later. Yeah, it's a lazy line which both isn't true and basically translates into, 'Wah, the new guys aren't doing immediate transitions into starters and All-Stars like that '90s group did and we MFY fans now expect as a birthright'
  5. Remember how the commissioner needed to void the trade of Stanton to the yanx on account of it bringing about the end of competetive balance and an unbroken string of championships to the Bronx?
  6. May he fill newspaper headlines with purple prose.
  7. * Jeimer Candelario from the Nats to the Cubs *AJ Pollack to SFG from SEA * Paul Seawald to the DBacks * Randal Grichik and CJ Cron from COL to LAA * RHP Aaron Civale to TBR from CLE
  8. Oddly enough, that song was used extensively in the movie. no it wasn't
  9. The Mayo scouting report Acuña signed out of Venezuela in 2018 for $425,000 -- more than quadrupling the $100,000 bonus the Braves gave his older brother Ronald four years earlier. Luisangel may not have his older brother's superstar ceiling, but he does have the potential for solid tools across the board. He stood out as one of the best all-around players in the 2022 Arizona Fall League and was in the midst of his best season yet as a 21-year-old in Double-A when the Rangers dealt him to the Mets for Max Scherzer this July. Acuña attacks pitches with an explosive right-handed stroke and an aggressive approach. He'll draw his share of walks and doesn't strike out excessively, but he chases and swings and misses too frequently against non-fastballs and doesn't always make quality contact. If he can settle down a bit and drive the ball in the air on a more regular basis, he could be a .270 hitter with 20 or more homers per season. Combining solid speed with savvy on the bases, Acuña swiped 126 bags in 151 attempts during his two-plus years in full-season ball before the trade. Earlier in his career, he faced some questions about his ability to remain at shortstop, but he has shown that he has the solid range and arm to do so. He has the tools and athleticism to play all over the diamond, and with Francisco Lindor in New York, Acuña could wind up at second base or in center field. Can he pitch? Yes, but he's considered too young for our staff.
  11. Daniel Murphy also claimed that younger brother was a better hitter than him. Baby bro never made the majors. So even if Ronald Jr did say it that doesn't make it true. Also, Ronald at age 21 was in his second ML season.
  12. Luisangel Jose Acuna - BB-Ref gives him the Spanish pronunciation: loo-EESE-ahn-hel 5' 8" / 185 (that's pretty damn solid for 5' 8" ... unless he's just fat which I doubt). BR/TR, won't turn 22 until next March Got good bloodlines obviously. Big bro is likely to be this year's NL MVP (unless six other guys from his own club beat him out for it) and Ronald Sr. was signed by the Mets back in the late 90s and, though never made MLB, stayed in the minors until age 27 and in Caribbean winter leagues until fairly recently (still just 44 y/o). Started this year as Jonathan Mayo's (mlb.com) 71st best prospect then got bumped up to #44 in their mid-season report. A good season in AA at age 21 will do that for a guy: .315/.377/.453 in 402 PA at Frisco/Texas Lg. Also 42 steals in 47 attempts Was actually promoted to AA late last season when still just 20 after putting up a 900 OPS in A+ Hickory NC (Sally Lg) .224/.302/.349 in 169 PAs during his first shot at AA so a nice adjustment this season in his first full season above A ball. Is going to be assigned to Binghamton with Syracuse looking like almost a certainty for next April at which point he'll hopefully dictate his own schedule as to when he gets called up. What remains to be seen is where they'll use him on the field. Looks like he's played mostly 2B & OF
  13. You need to adjust your thinking for those sorts of career records. They ask for Cubs so the reflex move is to start thinking of long-term Cub HoF'ers like Banks, Santo, or Billy Williams ... none of whom reached 3,000 hits But Lou Brock did, even if only 310 of them were as a Cub
  14. I just wonder if this season winds up chastening Cohen's penchant for making the 'splashy' move simply because he can not because it's necessarily the best idea. Because while most of the '22 moves worked out almost without exception [bassitt, Ottavino, Robertson, Marte, Canha, Carrasco, Escobar, Scherzer] the '23 moves had a much lower success rate and now he's eating a bunch of money to make some of them go away. It's like he sees the shiny baubles [Velander, Scherzer, Baez, Correa] and decides he wants one of each only to find out that maybe they weren't the best moves after all. And while I'm not going to mimic a former poster and demand the the team 'SHOW US THE PLAN', it would be nice just to know that they actually have one as opposed to just employing a scatter-shot approach based on what looks best in the candy aisle while you happen to be passing it.
  15. 9-3 O's and they're still just heading to the bottom of the 5th nearly two hours after first pitch. Neither starter is still in the game. Milwaukee just finished up a tough stretch of their schedule that started prior to the ASG Cincy x3 ASB @ Cincy x3 @ PHI x3 ATL x3 Cincy x3 @ ATL x3 They went 5-1 vs in-division CIN and took 2-of-3 from PHI for a 7-2 record overall Unfortunately for them (and us) they went 1-5 vs ATL putting their overall record at an uninspiring 8-7 Cincy takes over 1st place in the NLC by 1/2 game as a result of them blowing out the Dodgers today coupled with the Brewers getting swept this weekend.
  16. Luis Severino is off to a bit of a rough start on SNB in Camden Yards tonight: Single, Single, Double, Double, BB, HR Just got his first out. But now another single plus a SB 6-0 Orioles, 1 out, bottom 1st, but it might be higher by the time I post this
  17. The one thing we know for sure is that, for the third season in a row, the Mets will need to revamp almost their entire starting rotation and a good chunk of the bullpen by hitting the open market and hoping for the best. That after paying the price -- sometimes in dollars, sometimes in bodies -- for Bassitt, Taijuan, Carrasco, Quintana, Scherzer, Verlander, Senga, Ottavino, Robertson, Raley, plus various other more minor figures, they'll likely have four or fewer of that group by the time OD 2024 comes around.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: With their tally in the opening frame today, the Mets have now scored 33 1st inning runs on the season. Ronald Acuna has scored 32 But wait, there's more! Since a single player scoring more than once in a single inning is extremely rare (even a leadoff hitter would require at least an 8 run 1st) it's safe to say that Acuna has scored in the 1st in 32 of the Braves (103) games. But even the Mets have had a handful of multiple run 1sts this year so they've actually only scored in the opening frame in 20 games to Acuna's 32 ... and that's just fucking ridiculous.
  19. Tied at 6-6 in the 9th, the Pirates get runners on 1st & 2nd with no outs in bottom 9 but fail to score the walkoff In top 10, with Bryce as the ghost runner, an infield hit + error gives the Phils 2nd & 3rd w/no outs but then they fail to score mostly due to running into a 9-2-4-2 FO-DP* Then, as I'm typing the above, Josh Palacios (yeah, I don't know him either) fails to move their ghost runner with his first bunt attempt, so they take off the bunt and he sends the next pitch into the RF stands for the walkoff win on what was also his first ML HR. Oh yeah, and it's his birthday (28) and he invented about five new dance steps during his trip around the bases. So, bottom line: Phils lose on what was an entertaining as hell 1-1/2 innings which is all I saw of the game so I missed the first dozen runs. * Fly to medium deep RF, but Harper had been thrown out at 2nd on a hit earlier in the game by the same RF so he bluffed coming home before putting on the brakes. Problem was the trail runner (Bohm) bit on the fake and he didn't stop. Catcher takes the throw from RF and throws behind Bohm at 2nd. Harper breaks for home on the throw down to 2B but the return throw nails him.
  20. With their tally in the opening frame today, the Mets have now scored 33 1st inning runs on the season. Ronald Acuna has scored 32
  21. Raley: 'Hey J.V., I just closed out your 250th career victory. How big a bonu$ ya gonna give me?'
  22. So instead of the cards being dealt, the Cards have become the dealer. - 100+ mph reliever Jordan Hicks is sent to Toronto - and now the Rangers are said to be in talks to acquire LHP (and former NYY) Jordan Montgomery from StL
  23. I just looked up to check whether it was the 6th or 7th inning ... Holy Shit it's still just the 4th?!?
  24. It's 'Everything that Can Go Wrong Will' day at CF
  25. Chad ochoseis wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: Looks so far that unproven though high ceiling guys are their current obsession. Absolutely the right approach, I think. I'll take that risk over getting a 25-year-old marginal player all day and every day, and I doubt Scherzer would have fetched more than a marginal established player from anyone else. Even if 90% of those high ceiling guys fail, the 10% who succeed make it a worthwhile gamble. There are certainly lots of choices that fall somewhere between rookie level teenagers and and 25 y/o low ceiling types. Not knocking those they've targeted, just don't want them to limit themselves to just one type of option. Plus I'm a bit worried about Steve acting somewhat Wilponian by forever chasing the latest trends. 'Oh, spend megabucks on legacy FAs ... sure, we can do that'. 'What's that you say, the new rules favor the young and athletic? ... OK, let's switch gears and go after those'
