  1. The 'Mercury Mets' - and the other alt-uni promotions that about 2/3 of the teams participate in that same night - was easily the dumbest and most pointless gimmick I've ever seen. I had no idea what they were trying to do there.

  3. A Boy Named Seo wrote: June 11-13 is actually the Dodgers. I'm going to be there in style on the 13th. On the field, kids. Mmmmm, you are correct sir. This means several things: 1) My copy of the schedule - the multi-colored one that I cut out of the Sunday Newsday Sports Section from the day the season that's currently hanging in my kitchen and from which I created the above grid - is wrong 2) That we're playing three series against the Dodgers this year - two of them in La-La-land 3) That ABNS should do the Dodger preview for those dates, while CF grabs another one ... say the Padres in July? 4) That we'll be playing intRA-league that week when most everyone else is playing intER-legue 5) That ABNS needs to somehow acknowledge the CPF from the field at Chavez Ravine ]I don't see time opening up for a second installment on the Nats in the next day and a half. Anybody want to expand on my first? Certainly not when there are Psychodelic Furs polls that need posting.
  4. btw, Torre: 5:15 today - 'Jeter's bruised thigh is fine, he was even fine to play yesterday (the rainout) so he's no problem for today' 7:10 - Jeter out of the lineup with a bruised thigh
  5. I've been doing some tracking of game times - that was the 3rd sub-2:00 game so far this season.
  6. For what? Nearly 30% of his hits were for xtras
  7. btw, The career record for highest pct of hits as singles (or at least it was when I stumbled across this question a few years back) is Maury Wills. There was probably a 1,000 hit minimum or something along those lines.
  8. If Greg is answering all of these through either memory or deduction I'm both impressed ... and frightened.
  9. The Texas-born Morgan did most of his growing up in the Oakland area. Not sure from exactly what age.
  10. Yes it was the last 10 batters of a game in Sandy Eggo. Dave "Soup" Campbell - who later went on to work for ESPN - was part of that game said once that he didn't want to take anything away from Seaver who was def dealing that day anyway but it was an afternoon game and the end was played in those creeping shadows that sometimes affect hitters and that no one stood a chance by the latter portion of the game. It was a 19K game overall.
  11. And then the Padres lost the game on a Stephen Drew walk-off HR off of Hoffman
  12. Reyes - 2.4 Chavez - 1.0 Beltran - 0.8 Green - 1.0 Feliciano - 0.4 Smith - 0.4
  13. I'll tack onto that question by asking who the all-time leader is since I happen to know that one In addition to CFs guesses: Juan Pierre, Jason Kendall
  14. Jake Peavy pitching to D'Backs: 2nd inning: Eric Byrnes struck out swinging; Stephen Drew struck out swinging; Carlos Quentin struck out swinging. 3rd Inning: Chris Snyder struck out swinging. Brandon Webb struck out swinging. Chris Young struck out swinging. 4th inning: Alberto Callaspo struck out swinging. Orlando Hudson struck out swinging. Chad Tracy struck out looking. 5th Inning: Eric Byrnes ... walked on a 3-2 count, 1 K short of Seaver's 10 K in a row record, and DAMN that pitch was close!!!!
  15. You ever hear a Yanqui fan try to define "true Yankee"? They, of course, can't, because the only real standard - no matter how much they want to pretend otherwise - is: - you were good and we liked you, then you are - you sucked and we didn't like you, then you aren't They can't limit it to only organization guys because that would eliminate the likes of O'Neill, Tino, Brosius, et al --- and they can't limit it to only those from WS teams (much as they want to) because that would bar Mattingly from the club So they usually come up with an either/or definition which allows both groups in but creates comical outcomes like Chad Curtis is, but Dave Winfield and his 10 years of HoF-caliber play isn't.
  16. Pretty quick, actually, for a game with 32 freakin hits.
  17. Not only do games like this suck, but we gotta wait 50-some hours until the next one. * I'm Ron Hunt - my first icon player!
  18. ]Who was it who said that you're going to lose one third of your games and that you're going to win one third of your games, and it's what you do in the remaining one third that determines what kind of a season you have.My theory is that if you're not going to hit, and you're not going to pitch, and you're not going to field ... ya might as well not do them all on the same day. Today sounds like one of those days even though I don't think there have been any errors (although two bunt hits can't be good). On the other hand, Green up w/sacks full so the comeback starts now baybee!!
  19. Alright, I admit it, I'm dumb. I've now seen this: pwn3d many times on the internet and I have no idea of it's origin. Enlightenment please!
  20. Bell had a terrific first 1/3 or so of the season he was here - prompting some cries of; 'SIGN HIM LONG TERM NOW!!!!' - before falling into an abyss for much of the rest of the season; which sort of mirrored the peak & valley aspects of his whole career. He had snagged that big contract that Houston wanted out from under coming off a big year he had there (as one of the "Killer Bees") a few years earlier. Alou - aside from several injury marred seasons - has been much more consistant. Bobby wound up giving Bell the start in Game 1 NLDS against the Giants with the idea (he claimed later on) that he would switch to Bubba Trammel for game 2 if Bell didn't hit. But then he severely turned his ankle in the field leaving it open for Timo to catch fire after being put in as the temp replacement and neither Bell nor Bubba saw another AB in that series.

Willie's answer has been that - between the early season built-in off days plus the rain-outs - he hasn't wanted to give his regulars even more days off than they've been getting. Now that we're starting to hit a more consistant stretch of games you might see a few changes - maybe starting today with the old DGANG. A note during last night's game mentioned that the Mets are the only team with as many as five guys who have started every game: Reyes, Wright, Green & Carlos^2. Endy's only start, I believe, was the one game where Moises sat.
  22. OHernandez - 4.4 Chavez - 1.4 Easley - 2.1 Smith - 0.5 Schoeneweis - 0.8 Green - 0.8
  23. Bell was the reverse throw-in cuz he was owed a ton of money - some $6mil IIRC - and Houston was anxious to get rid of the contract (and him). They had Hidalgo & Berkman coming up at that point and Derek had fallen out of favor and out of a job. The biggest difference is that Bell on his best day wasn't half the hitter Alou is.
  24. N - D ! ! ! ! Bunting is for WINNERS!!!!
  25. I'm envisioning a single and realizing that I don't know much about the OF arms ... but now the balk brings the arms into play on a fly ball!!!
