  1. Rubin/ESPN now reporting that Gee "has had surgery" to break up a blood clot and will remain in the hospital for the next "day or two".
  2. There are fines for going over a certain amount and then draft picks for going further over. 866K is a decent chunk of change but not if you think you're worth more and/or will be worth even more by taking the college route and trying things again in three years.
  3. Friday is the deadline for 2012 draftees to sign. Teddy Stankiewicz, 2nd round - 75th overall, is the only one of the Met top 16 picks not to sign so far. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draftdb/2012xteam.php?team=1013 how much money do the Mets have left? As that link notes, the Mets have currently spent $185,600 under their allotment for the guys they've already signed. So if they throw that amount all at Stankiewicz they could pay him the $680,400 that his slot dictates plus the 185,600 "left over" and go as high as 866K. They could go higher still if they go under slot for some of the remaining unsigned players but they can NOT simply used money from players who don't sign at all and throw that towards just one or two players. Slot money for players who don't sign is simply lost.
  4. Mixed in with this is that they've already pushed Santana back to at least Sunday - or maybe to the Nats series next week - due to the ankle that got stepped on in his last start.
  5. OCCUPY STANKIEWICZ
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Why is Robinson Cano deciding who is in Home Run Derby? It's just a show for the fans, right? Why would he not choose to have a hometown favorite in the competition? I saw a quote where he said something about how he wanted to choose the best team possible. Why? Does this "count" too? They've taken to naming "captains" on each side and those guys get to pick their teams - although I suspect there's some league involvement as well. Cano, as defending champ, was this year's AL captain. Matt Kemp was NL captain. And, yeah, you'd think it would be smart to get some local flavor into what is essentially a meaningless contest, although it's tough to argue for kicking out one of Prince, Trumbo or Bautista to do it.

  8. Billy Butler (16 HRs this season) is the KC DH who local fans wanted included. Brett Butler is either the former Brave/Indian/Dodger (and brief NYM) or a female actress/comedian.
  9. Berman is crap, maybe he won't be back next year. Seriously? Concocted non-event events like this which thrive on hype, loud calls, and more talk than actual action (see also: drafts, pre-game shows, etc.) are tailor-made made for Chris Berman; they're the reason he's employed. ESPN, which (except for the BB2N gang off in a segregated portion of the Bristol campus) can now go back to ignoring baseball now that what they think is the highlight of the season is over, wouldn't pull him off of something like this at gunpoint. I'm curious what some of you that are/were against Interleague play in general feel about the tradeoff of possibly getting back some scheduled doubleheaders? it's one of the changes that feels like it's been under-reported. Get an extra roster spot for them too. It's so under-reported that I have no idea what you're talking about. What does IL play have to do with double-headers?

  11. Lemme get this straight; Big mouth saying that ARod's PED use "does cloud" his records is, according to the Yanx, "incendiary"? -- Shit, there are six year olds saying that during 1st grade recess. What this all shows is that the Yanx have Riggie over a barrel with this kind of stuff because all they have to do is threaten to cut him off and it'll ruin the last connection he has to baseball. No one else has ever given him the time of day once he quit playing because they all thought he was an asshole back then. Old man Steinbrenner was his sugar daddy and even he wasn't stupid enough to give Jackson an on-field job. Hell, you would have thought he said something really controversial like Phil Rizzutto being in the HoF is the biggest injustice since Milli Vanilli's Grammy award. Oh wait, everyone over kindergarten age knows that one's true also.
  12. Back to actual Dickey news: Letterman on Wednesday.
  13. TransMonk wrote: Edgy DC wrote: He's gonna get to pitch one way or another... Now that YFMolina isn't going to be there, I wouldn't be surprised if LaRussa uses it as an excuse not to get Dickey into the game at all. That kind of jerkery is usually only reserved for the likes of (Yanqui icon) Billy Martin. In 1982 Cleveland 3Bman Toby Harrah was leading the league in hitting and was having the season of his career [.332/.438/.548 w/17 HRs at the break] when he was naturally picked for the ASG. Martin went on to use every player on his bench that game except Harrah. Martin and Harrah had crossed paths briefly when both were with Texas several years earlier and the thought was that Billy didn't like Harrah for some reason (real or imagined) so used the chance to embarrass him by letting the league's leading hitter at that point sit on the bench.
  14. 'nother blown save for Heath Bell today Entered the 9th up by 2 in StL but gave up 3. 3 hits, 2 walks + a sac fly

  16. OK, all of you who have KTEs on tap have no excuses for being unprepared, what with the lengthy break coming up and all. Especially that Frayed Knot asshole who has the first one. Man, if he doesn't come up with something real good we should just all run him the fuck off the board. 17. There are three sub-.400 teams in the NL this season: Houston, Colorado, Chicago Mets = 4-8 against them so far.
  18. Runs given up by BoSox pitchers in the 1st inning during this series: Game 1 = 5 Game 2 = 4 Game 3 = 3 Game 4 = 2 So I guess if you're a Sox fan and you want to look on the bright side you call that improvement. The 2nd of the 2 runs tonight came in when a potential 5-5-3 DP throw from 3rd base somehow didn't reach the pitchers mound. Luckily for the Sox Jeter returned the favor in bottom one by pulling a Castillo - dropped a 2-out pop up. 2-1 end of one. Only 40 minutes or so for the first inning. I think that's ahead of their usual pace.
  19. Davey's boys pull off a double steal w/2 outs in the 9th ... but fall short anyway. Rox scored their final two runs - 1 in the 8th + 1 more in the 9th - on wild pitches to win 4-3 Nice of the Nats to lose 2-of-3 to chumpy Rox while we were losing 2-of-3 to chumpy Cubs Braves were the big NL East winners this weekend. They leaped the Mets and draw closer to Nats by holding off the Phils. Pittsburgh thumping the Giants late in their game. Lincecum started for SF: 3.1 IP, 6 earned
  20. Rox get two in the 8th to tie things at 3 in Washington. Braves lead the Phalling Phils 4-3 in the 7th
  21. Great NYM pitching today ... for 7 of the 9 innings. Sucky NYM hitting today for 9 of the 9 innings.
  22. Futures Game at 5PM today on ESPN2 Wheeler & Flores on opposite squads.
  23. Thole definitely has his weak ground-ball stroke down pat. Three in a row so far today resulting in four outs and several potential rallies killed. In recounting his ASG appearances, Keith is conveniently forgetting the '85 game where, as he recounts in his 'If At First' book, he declined the opportunity to be an addition to that squad (albeit a last-minute one).
  24. And now they blow a third good chance at chopping away at the lead!
  25. Getting down by four in the 1st inning is one thing - it happens (and the Cubs didn't exactly smack the ball around that inning either). But then allowing two consecutive opportunities to slide by without scoring -- runner on 3rd w/1 out; 1st & 2nd w/no outs and 2-3-4 coming up -- is the type of thing that comes back to haunt you.
