While listening to Scully you can tell that they're not simulcasting him on the radio because he'll often go several pitches at a time without really describing what's going on. You can't do that on radio obviously but, on TV, the pictures take care of that quite nicely to the point where saying "that's fouled back" is kind of over-kill when everyone can see that it's just been fouled back. That's what gives him the time to tell his mini-stories uninterrupted while of course staying ready to go back into play-by-play mode whenever some action crops up.

  3. I'd argue that even warning everyone was a bit of over-reaction (like the players couldn't handle this on their own?) but I suspect the umps have their orders.
  4. This weekend provides us with the mixed blessing of a guaranteed two wins and two losses from the other NL East teams. * Phils are in Miami for the weekend -- Marlins lead 1-0 early as Cliff Lee searches for his first win. Johnson going for the fish * and the Nationals escape the heat of DC (or maybe not) by visiting Georgia . Scoreless after 1 so far; Detwiler & Delgado
  5. Igarashi was one of those just re-called to fill holes left by the double-LHP-DL-ing. Wonder if he'll get a start?
  6. New LAD ownership certainly isn't going into this thing lightly, although smartly is still yet to be determined. In addition to the whopping $2+ billion price tag, they confounded MLB insiders this week by signing Cuban defector Yasiel Puig to a $42 million/seven year contract. Puig, a 21 y/o corner OFer who hasn't played in over a year, has only been lightly seen by U.S. scouts and is rumored to be out of shape. He's considered a far lesser prospect compared to say Oakland pre-season signee Yoenis Cespedes who got a "mere" $30mil and this signing is causing some to throw around the word "crazy" to describe it.
  7. Keep in mind that we've won one in a row at this point and that we're seeing them without both Kemp & Ethier.
  8. The additional fun part about all those other games was also how each team lost. - Yanx, up by 2, lost on 3R HR in the 9th - Braves led for much of the game but eventually lost on a tie-breaking solo HR in the 9th - Nationals clawed their way back from a 7-0 hole only to lose 11-10 on a walk-off single in the 11th - Phils were in a 5-0 hole before they ever came to bat but, after clawing most of the way back, stranded two runners in the 8th plus one more in the 9th to fall short Each team, except for the Nats, were at home too.
  9. Ceetar wrote: thanks. right, I was looking to compare that to the league average for June, which I couldn't seem to find. So now, from the main page of BB-Ref, click on the pitching splits link right under the National League Heading (just above the standings) and you'll get identical breakdowns only for league-wide stats. You can also switch that to MLB-wide in addition to NL only or AL only.
  10. Ceetar wrote: Anyone know a site that does team double splits? like "Mets bullpen in June"? Although they're only 13-13 in June despite having the second best team ERA in the majors. BB-Ref Go to the Mets 2012 stat page - click not just on Pitching but Pitching splits - scroll down to reach 'Months' section and see not just where they have Apr, May, June stats, but also each month's GS & GR (games started, games relieved) broken out Pen ERA: Apr = 5.02; May = 5.82; June = 3.90 The penners are, however, 0-5 in June so maybe those fewer runs allowed aren't always coming at the best of times (although W/L stats for relievers are notoriously inaccurate)
  11. Young - 2.9 Byrdak - 0.4 Rauch - 0.7 Parnell - 0.8 Wright - 2.2 Torres - 1.5 Nickeas - 0.5 Tejada - 0.7 Murphy - 0.3
  12. Pen numbers from last night: 2-2/3 IP -- Byrdak 0.2, Rauch 1.0, Parnell 1.0, 1 walk -- intentional by Byrdak, after the passed ball moved up the runner he inherited 1 hit -- off Rauch, that swinging/slapping bunt thing that the guy fucked up but got away with anyway right before he was erased on the sweet DP A few more nights like that every now and then from the much-maligned pen crew and this might actually become a decent team. That DP, btw, upped the NYM win pct figure from 61% to 82%, the biggest jump from a single play either way in the entire game. So that play earned both difficulty and style points, even from the Romanian judge (doing a little warming up for the Olympics here)
  13. Great relief pitching all around. What a concept!
  14. I'd stick with Rauch - even if just so you'd have a backup ready if he starts putting runners on. If you go immediately to Parnell and he falters, then what? But we all knew he was going this way all along.
  15. So here's our (seemingly nightly) Terry bullpen question for the day: He double-switched so the pitcher's spot would NOT hit here in top 9, plus Rauch just had a successful 8-pitch inning. So does he automatically go to Parnell in the 9th or leave the large man in?
  16. Oh give me a break. He couldn't do that again if given 20 tries
  17. If Teixeira dropped a throw like that would the umps even notice it?

  19. Ashie62 wrote: Gary advocating the return of Frenchie for some right handed pop. Wasn't really advocating it, more just suggesting that Francoeur is the type likely to be available and that this team does need some RH punch
  20. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Forget playing LIKE it; I think Duda actually does NOT want the ball hit to him. That's a coincidence, I don't want the ball hit to Duda either.
  21. Braves also lose on a 9th inning HR. That other Chris Young for Arizona took Kimbrel deep. So with Miami having the day off, a win tonight nets us 1/2 game or a game against everyone in the east.
  22. Speaking of sons with different skills, I hadn't realized that Scott Van Slyke was back up but I saw him briefly when he was with LA earlier this year. The kicker is that he's virtually the opposite of everything his father was: Right-handed, huge, slow, no glove to speak of but with big-time power. Three legacies in the LAD line-up tonight when you add in Tony Gwynn Jr., and then for added attraction they've got Jerry Hairston Jr. on the bench.
  23. Yanx lose to the Chicago Venturas on a 3R HR in the 9th off Robertson. LFer Dayan Viciedo was the hero. Alas, Jeter's drive to the RF wall with a man on in the bottom of the inning wasn't quite far enough even for the walls in YSIII - even if Michael Kaye did briefly wet his pants during the call.
  24. Rox win via walk-off single in the 11th
  25. 10-10 in the 9th as Harper Homers in top 9 to tie it.
