  1. Not quite as hyped as Draft Day, but a big day in the future life of a franchise (maybe) but with an even bigger margin for error and also now with its own spending cap system. Anyway, The Mets have signed Dominican shortstop Amed Rosario for $1.75MM, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America. The figure might mark the largest bonus given to a Dominican player during this signing period, Badler tweets. Badler writes that Rosario might be the most divisive player in Latin America. Those who like him say that he has strong fielding instincts, hands, and arm strength. Other scouts fear that he is prone to strikeouts with his uppercut stroke. oe: more from BA Rosario, the No. 11 international prospect for July 2, is a 16-year-old righthanded hitter with plenty of room to fill out his lanky, 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame. Some teams project Rosario as a shortstop with offensive upside, though others think he may outgrow the position.
  2. Wheeler's impressive 1st half nets a jump in John Sickels' mid-season re-rank from his pre-season slot at #36 up to #13 Some of that move is caused by top of the list guys like Harper & Trout graduating themselves out of prospect land but he's leaped some others as well.

The smaller markets tend to out-vote the larger ones on a per capita basis - remember that it was Cincinnati, not one of the big cities, that originally got the vote taken away from fans because of box stuffing.
  4. Wright was walking away while yelling stuff back over his shoulder, he didn't need rescuing there. Besides, supposing he did get run? BFD at that point. Plus, for all we know, he could have been saying; "... first I get screwed out of the AS starter job and now this, what a fuckin' day it's been", while Randazzo was chuckling right along.

  6. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Hey, they walked Uribe! That's one walk this game for him, right? Sounds like a record. Actually I think that was his second. That's another way this game is like that 2nd one in Chicago, not just the errors but in that one NYM hurlers were walking (or HBP-ing) Soriano & Castro several times each.
  7. Somebody needs to tell Tony Gwynn Jr that he doesn't have to wear his father's pants.
  8. Fman99 wrote: These ESPN announcers are as brainlessly repetitive as the Fox crew from yesterday. Yes, we get it. The Dodgers haven't led a game in many days. They don't score often. Also, this just in. Clayton Kershaw won the "triple crown" last year. Just. Stop. It. The pitching triple crown is bullshit anyway. I think every time they mention the triple crown and they're talking about a pitcher that Carl Yasztremski dies a little bit inside. Meanwhile, you get the idea that if ESPN didn't have the broadcast rights to the Home-Run Derby that they wouldn't even mention the ASG at all.

  11. Man, a couple of years ago I would have bet on Loney being a star by now. And now he's 0 for his last 26 ABs!
  12. Kershaw retired ONE batter that inning and got away with just one run. Can't be doing that with quality pitchers on the mound.

The then-Commish(?) realized that shenanigans had gone on, and replaced the Reds player (George Crowe?) with Stan Musial. 3 or 4 Cincy-voted starters were replaced with other NL stars that year (might have been 1957). That result also signaled the end to fan voting for a long stretch.
  14. It used to be when ASG promos were read on the air or in print that some clubs (mostly smaller market ones it seems) would slyly imply that, while filling out your ballots, any [nudge nudge wink wink] votes for the marginally deserving ones wearing the home colors would be OK from their viewpoint. But in the last handful of years ALL teams have gone from maybe tip-toe-ing over that line to using one of Evel Knevel's old motorcycle stunts to jump over it to the point where blatantly instructing fans to stuff the box for their own players as often as possible whether deserving or not is simply standard practice. Tough for MLB to allow that sort of stuff to go unabated and then complain when the inevitable result happens. This particular result suxx for Wright (assuming he cares and the fact that he's going anyway means he probably does) but I don't expect any undeserving or marginally deserving winners to apologize and withdraw and I certainly don't expect the folks who came up with the system to point out its inherent flaws.
  15. btw, it's not clear from the reading if everyone here was in on where Seawolf was going there with his description of the Mariners' recent pen acquisition -- "a lefty. Just called him up. Five and a third innings, five hits, one run, two walks, and six Ks. Could probably come cheap." -- but it's a reference to one Oliver Perez. IOW, all that glitters is not necessarily gold.
  16. Coffey running is particularly not a good idea in such a seismically active area.
  17. Torres is getting on tonight ... of course he's also getting erased half the time but it's progress.
  18. Braves evened up the series with Washington by beating Strasberg. Atlanta got to Strasberg with 3 in the 3rd and the Nats pulled him - maybe because of the heat. Marlins beat the Phils and Hamels 3-2
  19. I'm not sure if the entire team had 6 3R HRs plus a GS all last season (OK, so they actually had 14 + 3, but it's kinda close considering)
  20. For all of Ike's problems this year, he's certainly made his HRs count. That was his 6th 3R HR to go along with a Grand Slam out of the 11 he's hit
  21. Thome reportedly to be dealt to the Orioles.

  23. Swan Swan H wrote: Checking into the Nats-Braves game. The Washington announcers are about five seconds from actually fellating Bryce Harper on the air. No reason they should give Harper different treatment than they give to the rest of his Nats' teammates.
  24. 6 earned on 10 hits over just 4.2 IP for the now 0-5 Cliff Lee

More or less is correct as the bases don't actually form a perfect square.
