Then at least we're not into the over-taxed bullpen by the 5th inning again ... or wait, we are. Good thing then that we don't have to face their best two pitchers over the next two days ... oh wait ... And at least the reliever isn't just handing out base-runners to make the situation worse ... oh wait, he's doing EXACTLY that. GEEZ, make them earn it at least!!

  3. And the man with the leadoff double has yet to move and doesn't score. I've seen this movie already and I know how it ends.
  4. Hey Dillon, why don't you try putting the leadoff man on one of these innings? And then if you enjoy that you might want to fall behind in the count a few times, y'know, just to see how it feels.
  5. And yet another piece o shit bouncer which finds a hole ... and now ANOTHER one!!!! Not that it matters seeing as how we've got an infield hit off a guy making his ML debut (and I don't think any of the outs have left the infield either) but, geez, except for Holliday's hit they're not exactly smacking the ball off the walls here.
  6. Is Gee going to get yanked or reach the 100 pitch mark by the 4th inning? Or maybe both. It would also be nice if the Cards would actually hit a ball AT a fielder every once in a while.
  7. Eight of the top twelve single-season doubles marks of all time were made within a six year span by seven different players Earl Webb - 67 in 1931 George Burns - 64 in 1926 Joe Medwick - 64 in 1936 Hank Greenberg - 63 in 1934 Paul Waner - 63 in 1932 Charlie Gehringer - 62 in 1936 Todd Helton - 59 in 2000 Chick Klein - 59 in 1930 Tris Speaker - 59 in 1923 Carlos Delgado - 57 in 2000 Billy Herman - 57 in 1935 Billy Herman - 57 in 1936

It's like it runs in the family or something. Of course my father was a lefty too yet wound up with five RH'd kids so yaneverknow. I can't find a picture of Gary Hernandez He showed up in the booth at an SF game a couple years back. Let's just say that he doesn't use the product that his brother & Clyde endorse.
  12. Another game, another 9 Ks (and counting), another day with just 4 hits (and only two were deserved).
  13. I was yelling at Rice to cover the plate before Buck even picked up the ball, but for some reason he never heard me.
  14. I suppose it's only fair to give equal time to Keith's brother
  15. There are three players from the last decade who Murphy could have thrown out on that play ... and all of them are named Molina.

My favorite Ellis Valentine throw involved him and Pete Rose -- it could have been this game Rose was on 1st via a lead-off single when Manny Trillo hit a pitching wedge of a shot to medium-shallow RF just inside the line. Valentine, charging in and over towards the line, fields the ball on it's first high hop and, in one motion, does a 270-degree spin-o-rama in order to uncork a knee-high bullet to 3B where Hubie Brooks swipes the tag through the cloud of dust and right across the forearms of the head-first diving Rose. It would take a Hollywood director about 30 cuts to get the timing as perfect as how that high-speed ballet played out and even then he'd probably have to throw in some CGI to make it look as good.
  17. This could be a lot worse right now seeing as how Hefner has essentially only retired 3 batters through 2 innings and 12 batters. He got an extra out via the Holliday DP, one more on that Fly ball DP in the 1st, and one on Lynn's sac bunt
  18. Def surprising to see how quickly this all went down (particularly, what, two days after I dismissed it as an option) although, what did Gary say yesterday?, we're in line to face something like seven straight RHPs.
  19. I remember a long ago SI article on outfield arms. In it, scouts and execs were discussing their favorites, the strongest, the best, and whatnot. And as they talked they put some guys in the 'Great' category, and then others maybe slightly below that although not all lists agreed. But then, in the view of just about everyone, separate and above all others, there was Ellis Valentine. They talked about his arm is total awe and wonder.

Remember where you heard it first. Against his old team no less.

  23. Just a couple quick notes on this series (and to bump this KTE back up top): - Games times are at 7:05 EDT on Monday (for TV purposes which also means it's an ESPN game for some of youse outta-towners) but back to 8:15 on both Tuesday & Wednesday and then a 1:45 starting time on Thursday Mon: Hefner vs Lynn Tues: Gee vs Gast Wed: Marcum vs Miller Thurs: Niese vs Wainwright Lance Lynn is the reliever turned starter for this season who's currently 5-1 with a 2.71 ERA and 1.05 WHiP in 7 starts John Gast (24) will be making his major league debut. He was 3-1; 1.16; 1.06 over 7 starts with AAA Memphis Shelby Miller [5-2; 1.58; 0.88] & Adam Wainwright [5-2; 2.30; 0.99] are the two coming off back-to-back one-hitters vs Colorado this past weekend. The Rox at one point went 50 ABs between base hits.
  24. The other problem with Duda to 1B is that he's the only regular in the OF right now so pulling him out would create even more of a Chinese Fire Drill out there. And then of course he'd theoretically be moved back when/if Ike straightened himself out and be a month or two rustier at playing a position he's already not good at. I was all for demoting Davis last year but find myself less for it now I think because of all the OF/1B uncertainty. A few more days of this though will start me trending in that direction.
