  1. And then there's the whole thing about MLB deciding on the reviews but having to rely on the local feed(s) for the evidence. Not all teams televise every game and can we always rely on the local feeds, not to hold back an angle that might be detrimental to their team, especially in cases where the team and station are owned by the same people? "Minor" things like those are why the simple pro-replay argument of--"well if it corrects just one bad call then it's worth it"--doesn't paint the whole picture.
  2. Those aren't the details I'm most concerned about. ALL replay ideas work REALLY WELL in theory and on paper. But more importantly ... - what is and what is NOT going to be reviewable? - What happens to actions that were the result of the initial call after a play gets reviewed & changed? Catch vs Trap for instance; also a foul call changed to fair.
  3. No one signed up for this and I don't know much about this team. We played them the opening series of the year and won two of three. - April 1 - Mets 11 - Padres 2 Edison Volquez walked the park and that future NYM star Colin Cowgill iced the day with a Grand Slam - April 3 -- Mets 8 - Padres 4 Harvey 1-hits the Pads thru 7 as 'The Big Men (Ike, Buck & Duda) combine to drive in 7 - April 4 -- Pares 2 - Mets 1 Gee is good but the NYM bats get quieted by the combined efforts of perennial All-Stars Eric Stults, Brad Branch, Joe Thatcher, Dale Thayer, and Luke Gregorson. Buck HRs in the 9th off REAL all-star Huston Street for the only run. Game 1 - Wheeler vs Ross Friday 10:10 - Niese vs Ian Kennedy Saturday - 8:40 - Mejia vs Volquez Sunday - 4:10 - Harvey vs Stults NOT on the team at the moment are SS Evreth Cabrera (PED suspension) and C Yasmani Grandal who came off PED suspension but then got hurt. C - Nick (no relation) Hundley 1B - Yonder Alonso - who was drafted 11 spots ahead of Ike in the same year/same position. He wasn't better than Ike all along until suddenly he was. 2B - Jedd Gyrkko - A highly touted rookie with good pop for the position
  4. I'm awaiting the details before comment. My fear is that they (Selig, Torre, probably others) have been so intent on expanding replay that there are going to be 'we'll cross that bridge if/when we come to it' aspects of this that the outcome will be to is simply exchange old arguments and controversies for different ones.
  5. Centerfield wrote: How much money do they expect Ike to make in arbitration? Isn't it supposed to be based on how good you are? In theory, yes, but simply by moving to the arb-eligible category from the non-arb almost automatically gets a player a bump in pay. The obvious reason is because the club no longer has absolute control over salary, but also because said player is now being compared to players with similar service time who themselves have just gotten (or are about to) a bump from arbitration. IOW, a good 3rd year player (with the exception of those who have already signed L-T deals) generally makes a lot less than many sucky 4th year guys.

Some of the starters should learn to bunt (Mejia) or make contact once in a while (Harvey*) before they go seeking legal action. * Harvey has struck out in 12 of his last 17 ABs and is 1 for his last 23 oe: Oh, and Hefner's injury might ensure that he ends the season with ZERO hits Since HR'ing in his 3rd major league AB, Hefner is 1 for 49
  7. Yanx are suddenly winning (4 in a row; 5 of their last 6) and even starting to hit (additions of Granderson & Soriano) while the rest of the AL East is in the midst of a tough stretch: Boston is 2-4; Tampa 1-6 (and they had to pull one out in the 9th last night not to be staring at a 7-games losing streak); and Baltimore was just swept in Arizona Now I'm still not all that worried about them winning the East. They're still far enough behind Boston and with two other teams ahead of them there would have to be some kind of sustained and coordinated multi-team collapse in conjunction with a NYY surge. So unless they continue this mini-streak they're on during the long stretch of games they've got coming up all within the AL East: 3 each vs Boston, Tampa & Baltimore, plus 7 w/Toronto (against whom they are 8-1) then I think we're OK on that front. But what's disturbing is that they're starting to win games in funky ways. - Mariano blows three straight saves ... and the Yanx win two of them anyway - they've won games started by Verlander & Weaver in the last week. Weaver last night gave up 4 in the 1st after two were out and none on, then 4 more in the 2nd after two-out/1-on - Soriano has 7 HRs/17 RBI in 66 ABs (vs 17/51 in 382 prior to the trade) continuing the trend of sucking to raking which seems almost automatic with MFY mid-season deals - and it's still annoying that they're maintaining a five-.500 record with their negative run differential that even two straight blowout wins didn't erase ... and then there are those two Wild Cards The AL WC is shaping up as six into two situation (after that group there's a 7-game gap to Seattle) with the Yanx currently sitting 6th of that group behind TB, OAK, BAL, CLE, KC, currently 5.5 & 5.0 games in back of leaders Tampa & Oakland
  8. Mets out-hit the Dodgers 31 to 28 over the three games and also walked more (7 - 4) while XBHs were even at 6 to 6 The Dodgers had a 2-1 edge in HRs and struck out less (17 - 24) The obvious difference (aside from that whole 'Runs' thing) was LOBs: Mets = 26, Dodgers = 15 Not saying that we should have won all three, but all three were winnable and we certainly should have nabbed at least one or two. I suppose it's easy to say that the Dodgers, for all their winning over the last two months, didn't really impress all that much. But we also missed their top two pitchers (although two of their recent losses were Kershaw starts) and Hanley was out for two games, Ethier missed one-plus, and no Kemp the whole series (not that he's been any good while in the lineup).
  9. This is Marmol's 3rd inning and he hasn't even walked anyone yet? Sheeet, he's usually good for five walks by this point.
  10. I guess this tables the DL talk for Flores for a while. He's getting a runner but, hell, he needs a runner when healthy.

  13. Zvon wrote: OO nice. I thought Ike would be a dead duck. So did I - especially since he didn't get a good jump out of the box. In the meantime, RHPs simply can't get Ike out right now. Lefties are another story.
  14. I swear there's nobody who throws worse to 1B than pitchers. This is true even in softball leagues.
  15. I guess Terry didn't want to see Gee pitch to Dee.
  16. Now it's Gee's turn to skate on thin ice as he's retired just six of the last 14 hitters yet hasn't been scored on ... yet.
  17. Dillon trying to reverse-engineer his perfect game.
  18. How many [u:1hljef3a]hitters[/u:1hljef3a] can you think of who DON'T get a triple on a hit like Gee's? Even without counting the total Clydesdales, there's Cano for sure. Soriano as well. Piazza.
  19. Twice through the lineup (eighteen hitters) Capuano has still only retired eight men. Only the two GiDPs and the Puig throw have kept him out of even more trouble.
  20. Earned Runs given up by Capuano in his last nine starts: 0 - 0 - 5 - 5 - 0 - 5 - 0 - 0 - 5 ... and the one in progress is currently at 4 and counting.
  21. Gotta like 3-0 green lights!!
  22. Edgy MD wrote: Walk-off didn't reallyworm it's way in. It was sort of born overnight. It was around, but there was one big walk-off weekend back around 2004 when it was suddenly everywhere. I think what probably happened is that it became a catch phrase around the halls of ESPN and when that happens the desk jockeys suddenly can't use it enough. They did the same thing with "one-timer" when narrating over the top of hockey highlights. They mis-used that particular phrase more often than not, but that didn't stop them and they sure liked saying it. Meanwhile, another walk-off/extra-inning win for Arizona this afternoon. That's three in a row over Baltimore and all four of their last four wins.
  23. We're letting pitchers off the hook early again. Capuano retired only three of the first eight batters - but just one run to show for it all.
  24. TheOldMole wrote: Why does there need to be an equivalent term. Everyone knows what Sayonara means. I say we should adopt it. That would work fine for HRs, but would get over-used if applied to game-winning Sac Flies, singles, etc. It's those game-winning NON-HR situations that need a new term.
  25. Yeah, part of the problem is the ESPN-ization of the term "walk-off" which began originally with the Gibson/Eckersly HR but has since been expanded to include every game-ending play including abominations such as "walk-off Sac Flies" and "walk-off ground-outs". Fortunately former Pirate pitcher Bob Walk had most of his career prior to the invention of that term otherwise a free pass by him with the bases loaded in the right situation might have been described by some over-eager sportscaster as the batter getting 'a walk-off walk off Walk' I always liked the Japanese phrase of the 'Sayonara HR' for a game winner but there's no equivalent term here and so 'walk-off' has wormed its way into the lexicon.
