  1. Walk-off notes: - The Cardinals, despite being in or near 1st place all season, got just their 2nd walk-off win of the season last night in the 14th inning against Pittsburgh - The DBacks, on the other hand, have had each of their [u:24ne85ht]last three wins[/u:24ne85ht]* come via walk-off wins ... so youneverknow * we all remember the Goldschmidt HR from a few days ago. On Monday night (after two straight losses - heh, heh) the Snakes won courtesy of a Adam Easton HR, and last night Goldschmidt HR'd in the 9th off Baltimore closer Johnson to tie it and then came up again in the 11th and hit the first pitch out of the park to win it. That boy's having hisself a nice week.
  2. Tied in the 11th, Pittsburgh played the 5 infielders shift when the Cards got runners on 1st & 3rd with one out -- and the Pirates turned the 6-9-3 DP and they're going to the 12th.
  3. The sucky part about all this is that it's not like we're getting beat by Ramirez, Gonzalez, Ethier, and Crawford. It's by the likes of Ellis, Ellis, Uribe, and Punto.

You can't swing 3-0 there. Yeah, but for all the hitting this guy has done so far he is far from a polished ballplayer. He missed a squeeze play the other day *as the runner!!* which, considering the sign to the runner is a verbal one from the 3rd base coach, it's quite a trick. He's also been known to, in a quote from his manager, "run until he's tagged out", and the next cut-off man he hits from the OF just might be his first. IOW, maybe the take sign WAS ON.
  5. Yasiel with two on/one out was in prime spot to do some damage but opting to swing on 3-and-0 led him to run aground on his own personal ... .... Bay of Puigs.

  7. That didn't really surprise me; we're both two games under .500 in blow-outs as well as two games under in 1-run games. I only started this topic because it just seemed to me that we've been involved in an inordinate number of walk-off games this year (particularly losses) so I decided to look it up. Problem is, once I looked it up I still didn't really have an idea of whether that pct really qualifies as a lot or not.
  8. Well, this "gruesome" lineup (or some variation of it) is a hair above league average in runs scored for the year and has them four games over .500 since the end of June.
  9. Using BB-Ref's definition of a blow-out being more than five runs, the Mets this year are 14-16
  10. About the only good thing from last night's game is that the loss didn't come via a walk-off of some sort as a full [u:2gl6ed4v]1/3 of the Met road losses this year[/u:2gl6ed4v] (10 of 30) have. On the other side of the coin, nearly 1/3 (8 of 25) of NYM home wins have been achieved on the last AB of the game* I have no idea what the "record" for such stuff would be or even what the norm across baseball is for walk-off wins/losses, but doesn't one game in three (for games where a walk-off is possible) seem like a lot? And while it's impossible for home losses to occur via a walk-off, nine of our thirty-two home losses have come courtesy of runs scored in the visiting team's final AB. I count just three road wins coming via that route. * The eight 2013 NYM walk-off wins, four of which broke ties, four others were come-from-behind 4/7 -- Mets 4-Marlins 3 Byrd's 2-RBI single off Cishek scores Tejada & Nieuwenuis 4/24 -- Mets - 7 - Dodgers 3 (10) Valdespins 10th inning GS off Josh Wall 5/7 -- Mets 1 - ChiSox 0 (10) Baxters 1-out single off Nate Jones scores Davis 5/9 -- Mets 3 - Pirates 2 Baxters 1-out single off Jason Grilli scores Byrd 5/28 -- Mets 2 - Yanx 1 Murphys double off Rivera is followed by Wrights game-tying single then Dudas winner (after which the Mets probably celebrated too much) 6/14 -- Mets 4 - Cubs 3 Nieuwenhuiss 3R bomb caps a 4-run inning off Carlos Marmol 7/1 -- Mets 5 - DBacks 4 (13) After giving up a run in the top of the 13th, Browns 2-out/2-run single brings in Buck & Quintanilla 8/1 -- Mets 4 - Royals 2 (11) Eric Youngs 2-out/2R-HR off Luis Mendoza
  11. Mejia - 3.0 Torres - 0.3 Quintanilla - 1.0 Byrd - 1.0 Davis - 0.6 Young - 1.0 Flores - 0.6 Buck - 1.0
  12. Feliciano - 0.2 Aardsma - 0.1 Germen - 0.4 Rice - 0.5 Turner - 2.5 Byrd - 1.5 Murphy - 1.5 Satin - 0.5

Eh, they did get ten hits plus two walks so it wasn't one of those nights where they were flailing all evening. It was more one of those games where the timing simply sucked all night. The biggest problem came when five of the first eight batters getting hits resulted in just two runs thanks to the missed bunt (9th batter of the game) plus the two GiDPs (2nd & 10th). That inning plus the two more we left on base in the 3rd blew a real chance of running Nolasco's ass out of the game early but we let him off the hook. After that it was the FIVE LOBsters in the 7th & 8th while the Dodgers bunched most of their shit in one inning (cheap hits, real hits, our only error). Dodgers left 3 on, we left 9
  14. A winnable game that we managed, for a variety of reasons, not to win.
  15. Even as hot as he's been, when Ike has to face a LHP he doesn't bring a whole lot of confidence.
  16. That spot where Young went over the wall was almost the exact same spot where Angel Pagan went over much less violently yet wasn't seen again for the next year.
  17. Nick Freakin' Punto?!?!?!?!
  18. And for seemingly the millionth time this season - a bases loaded situation where we get the outs in the wrong order.
  19. Not sure if there was a legit strike in that whole AB

  21. Zvon wrote: If they're his own notes thats kool. Him be a little slow is ok considering. I'm surprised he still works alone. Yea, we are spoiled by our guys. It's not the source of the notes that's the problem, it's that he needs to rely on them so much because he doesn't know enough about the other team to speak without them. Gary works with notes and stats (everyone does) but he's also just such a baseball junkie that he can deviate from them or add to them on his own. Scully obviously can't. That's what happens when you're 80-whatever and have cut back on your schedule to where you only rarely see the east teams (Scully doesn't travel anywhere east of Denver). Scully is like Ralph a bit in that he knows the old stories better than the new ones.
  22. Edgy MD wrote: That failed --- and that's the kind word --- bunt could really end up hurting. Yup. We followed up 5 hits from the first 8 batters with a bunt/K then a GiDP And we have, what, like two base-runners since?
  23. Zvon wrote: That would be a shame. He's no nonsense and some may say bland, but he is a great voice of the game. Still has the great voice and all, but he seems to be just reading off pre-game notes for his knowledge. We're spoiled a bit by Gary & Howie but having a p-b-p man who knows all the current goings-on in the game makes a big difference. I don't think Scully does and therefore is overly reliant on whatever he's being fed on paper. He just gave the score of the in-progress Arizona game as 2-0 Baltimore, for instance, even though the crawl right on the screen changed it to first 2-1 and then 2-2 a while earlier.
  24. Vin has made several mistakes already. Called EY Jr. "the son of a former Met", mispronounced Piscataway, and then the no-hitter gaffe. Seems to be losing a bit off his fastball.
