  2. The Mets kept trying to let the Minny pitcher off the hook (despite TEN hits and two walks) but he inevitably sucked too much to make it through the 4th inning.
  3. This is a similar pattern to what they did a few days ago: Minny's pitcher retired just 3 of the first 10 batters (six singles and a walk) but the Mets have only 2 runs to show for it on account of two more outs on the bases - a Flores GiDP and Qball running into an out at 3rd on a single. Good start but it coulda/shoulda have been better.
  4. Yup, Yanx-Sawx clocks in at 4:12, only slightly shorter than Pirates-DBacks (4:39) but at least that game had the excuse of going 16 innings. Side note: Pirates used just four pitchers in that game. In total, six of yesterday's fifteen games ran over not just three hours but over 3:15
  5. This shit just keeps getting better. The Sox (Dempster) threw behind ARod with his first pitch in the first AB, then threw tight twice, then drilled him ball four. Both benches were then warned, Girardi got tossed 'discussing' why the first three near misses didn't warrant a warning, and the whole stadium is just waiting for who/when Sabathia is going to retaliate. I mean, how much fun would it be if AL pitchers collectively decided to make ARod the universal pariah and, as a result, each one drills him with their first pitch each day? And all this comes on a day when Cashman says that he essentially won't speak to Rodriguez now aside from perfunctory hello/goodbye stuff on account of pending/threatened litigation. Oh, and the game is currently tied at 3 in the 3rd

Why did TC leave in German (RH) against Headley (LH) when Feliciano was warming up? Was he saving him for the 9th? Well he brought Feliciano in eventually. In fact he kept him in longer than I thought and it backfired anyway. My larger point is that I'd like to see a manager -- ANY MANAGER -- cut himself free from designating specific innings to specific pitchers and fit the order to that particular day's needs. In this case, assuming that Hawkins and/or Aardsma are our "top" guys, why not bring them in for the 8th when the Pads had their best hitters up instead of saving them for the save situation that never occurred. So we wound up losing this game using one reliever who has been in the majors for like 45 minutes and another who has been in for about 45 years. And our year of walk-off losses continues.

  8. -- Would be nice if a manager could realize that the heart of the order and therefore the REAL save opportunity was in the 8th inning and bring in your best pitcher for then -- I also don't like Terry's too-often double-switches. Pedro's not going two innings no matter what happened there, so all the double-switch accomplishes is to tell Bud Black exactly who is going to PH for the pitcher's slot next time around so he can get his LOOGY up. -- We still need some more offense no matter what happens
  9. What can Brown do for us? .... Plenty!!
  10. Anybody besides me getting a kick out of the idea that YLDBs think ARod, who could be suspended for a long time, is a disgrace to the team and should never be HoF material, while the late owner, who actually was suspended--TWICE, including once for life until reduced later on--yet is the subject of a campaign by some of these same fans (and media) to be inducted into Cooperstown?
  11. Of the 15 games yesterday (Sat, Aug 17) only 3 came in at under 3 hours - and two of those not by much (2:49 & 2:51) The only game that could even reasonably be considered "quick" was Milwaukee's 2-0, 8-1/2 inning win over Cincy, a game that, at 2:28, would have been considered average about 30 years ago. The other 12 games [u:2q3hkxye]averaged[/u:2q3hkxye] 3:43 (aka seven minutes longer than the Mets/Pads slog-fest) and even if you throw out the two extra-innings games the ten 9 inning games checked in at an average of 3:21

Meanwhile, the Nats and Braves are into hour number six in their game, although they're being helped out by a ten-minute rain delay, a bean ball or two, several ejections. and the fact that they're into inning #15. Game would have been over a while ago but Nats closer Soriano gave up a two-out, 9th inning HR in his second consecutive outing.
  13. That game was the most boring seven hours I've ever spent.
  14. You could smell this one coming, especially seeing as how Harper was hit twice the other day and that the Nats have lost like a thousand in a row to the Braves ... Strasburg threw twice at Andrelton Simmons in the 2nd inning of tonight's game and was promptly ejected. Then Davey was ejected. Must have taken a while to sort it all out because they're two hours in and still only in the 4th inning. 4-2 Nats at the moment.

  16. Except that the Braves really only need a 2B until Uggla comes back. He had laser eye surgery which would usually be done in the off-season but they're so far ahead in the division that they decided he could afford the elective surgery now and still be back in September. Would I trade Murphy for a "top prospect"? ... Sure!!! Do I think they'll give us one for him? ... No. Terdoslavich has been up for a time this year although I don't think he's generally considered top prospect material. For updates on Braves higher minor league guys see here oe: And if you were the Braves would you trade for Murphy with this on your farm? (#7 from the linked list) Tommy La Stella, 2B -- Hitting .355/.440/.476 in 49 games* between High-A and Double-A, mostly at the higher level. All he does is hit and hit and hit; career .302/.404/.494 hitter**. Scouting reports are muted due to questions about his defense, but the guy rakes and I think his glove is underrated. Excellent strike zone judgment too. * now .360/.445/.498 in 73 games ** now .327/.410/.499

  18. -- Ryan Braun is to break his silence this afternoon and is expected to say ... "Yeah, I've been lying all along. I actually did it" -- And KC 2nd/3rd baseman Miguel Tejada gets hit with a 105 games (huh?) suspension for his third positive test for amphetamines. That knocks the 39 y/o one-time MVP who did not play at all in the majors last year out for the remainder of this season and more than half of next; aka: this probably ends his career.
  19. That's Sandra d'Ay O'Connor to you.
  20. They ought to drive him to the park in a DeLorean. Mets.com says he's wearing 15. I approve. The only thing better, IMO, would have been 8.
  21. Terry either loves double-switches or hates Satin's defense - or probably both.
  22. Yeah, but between the high pitch counts from all those Ks and the leadoff runners he's given up in almost every inning, he's walking a fine line despite the early lead.
  23. Muffy makes me nervous when he sits just behind the grass cutout to field grounders. I always think he's going to play himself into a bad hop.
  24. Not appearing in this game: Cliff Lee, Matt Harvey, Roy Oswalt, Jackie Bradley, or Rubby de la Rosa,
