  9. Just to add something to Steve's side argument (which really should have been split into another thread, because the original discussion was rather interesting), here is some hard data rather than numbers coming out of sports talk radio, wikipedia pages or a biased book from 10 years ago: http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=622 These are the Harris polls of Americans and their favorite sports from 1985-2005. It even provides some breakdowns by race, income, age and education. In support of Steve's argument, it does show a 9% drop in baseball's popularity over the past 20 years as well as a 9% increase in the NFL's popularity. It also shows an increase in NCAA Football as well as auto racing. However, baseball still is, and has been for the past 20 years, the 2nd favorite sport among American sports fans according to this poll. The poll doesn't say it, but I would venture to say that baseball had more worldwide appeal than the NFL...and baseball's worldwide appeal is very minute compared to much more popular competitive sports that American's know little to nothing about like soccer, rugby, cricket, table tennis and kickboxing.
  10. They look nice. Glad they have sleeves again. All they need to do now is ditch the black bills.
  11. White's obviously still trying to sell a book that is 10 years outdated.
  12. ]NASCAR and Golf are the fastest growing sports in terms of TV audience in the country. FACT. Baseball has been declining for years. Football is the unquestioned king, either pro or college. Baseball is in a decline, there really isn't much in the way of disputing that. TV viewership is down, and if you want to use attendance, if you take out the two NY teams, Boston, Chicago and St Louis, you'll find that baseball really hasn't "returned" the way it is projected. Half of MLB's teams set local TV revenue records last season...in addition to attendence records. More than just NY, Boston, Chicago and St Louis. MLB.TV made $150 from me alone and SNY made a portion of my Direct TV bill last year. I paid for 9 Mets baseball tickets, 2 Mets caps, my dad got me a Wright jersey for my birthday...and I live in Wisconsin! Does NBA or PGA even often online services that offer all their games?

Evidentally, ESPN News is reporting he will be back in NY for $11 mil in 2007 with an option for 2008. Neither ESPN.com nor any other website is reporting it. On edit: SI.com confirms, but for $10.5mil. Newsday says the Mets will have a telephone news conference at 4:50.
  14. I perfer contraction to expansion. I don't want the overall league talent watered down any more than it already is. I agree with most everything else Vic has after scheduling.

    Alou

I'm pretty lukewarm about the deal. I'm content because it's only one year, it's relatively cheap and a need was filled. I'm concerned because it's another signing of a guy that's over 35 and past his prime. I'll be happy if Alou can put up consistent numbers with what he did last year in as many games. However, I wouldn't be surprised if he stinks up the joint either. As for Milledge, I agree that this doesn't change his trade value at all. No one is untouchable, but if he is to be dealt, it should be for value. I am very happy that he is not getting the LF job, but also wouldn't mind hanging on to him to give him another year to mature and see what he can provide in '08. I also echo Marty Noble's mets.com report which opines that anything we can do to get Frank Robinson into Mets camp would certainly help the tutelage of Milledge. Robinson is exactly the type of mentor I would want for him.

Alou steals Valentin's #18 as part of the contract.

  19. The reps at my office were going around to all the guys last week trying to unload the stuff. I told them I would rather smell like hot garbage water than smell like Derek Jeter.
  20. That's a lot a dough just to talk to the guy.
  21. I agree. It's hard not to like a player who's played his entire 20 year career with one team. It'll be nice to see him get to 3000 with the Stros.
  22. If Drew can stay healthy, he's proven that he can put up decent offensive numbers. He has to be an option. He has played 33 games in left in his career, although none since 2003. He was scheduled to make 11 mil per year for the final 3 on his contract...that's pretty steep for someone injured as often as he is. On edit: And his agent is Boras.
  23. SNY: But in spring training, if someone said, you're going to win 97 games and go to a game seven of the NLCS, would you have said I'll take it. OM: I'd say, that's great. But that wasn't what we set out to do. That pretty much sums it up for me. Great attitude...great qoute.

Vic Sage wrote: Reyes (s) Wright (r) [with his patience, baserunning and discipline, hitting 2nd behind Reyes would be like they MFY's Ricky/Mattingly 1-2 punch] Beltran (s) Delgado (L) Soriano (r) - surrounded by a guy with a .400 ob% in front, and a decent contact guy behind him, and his speed breaks up the slowpokes. Green (L) LoDuca (r) [finally hitting where he belongs] Aurilia (L) - punch at the bottom I don't think 113 Ks and 66 walks are an indication that a player has patience and discipline. Not that he might not get better, but David gets fooled as much as anybody on the team at the plate and has no business batting second.
