  2. If I had the need and means to buy a full-page ad in a New York paper to deliver a personal message, I think the Post would be pretty low on my list, for at least two reasons. And being a famous dude, I'd probably reach more people by just posting it on my own social media to begin with. Maybe this should be a poll, but if you had a important personal message to deliver to the masses of NY, how would you do it?
  3. I kinda knew I wasn't interested when I saw it was the Post.
  4. Recovering from an https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/.amp/news/new-york-mets-sign-infielder-danny-mendick-to-one-year-1-million-dealACL tear last June so isn't road ready for a while. Seems good depth and more cocaine!!!!
  5. I remember being firmly in favor of his signing. Improved offense. Elite pitch framing. I am an idiot.

The stakes are very different in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. I admittedly know little about this stuff, but San Diego seems to be doing a lot to squash the market size narrative. My narrative is less about market size and more about the allowing the free market to operate. The system as it is set up now has few consequences for failure and a lot of consequences for chasing Cohen around. Along with the increasingly liberal playoff field, the whole deal is set up to incentivize mediocrity and restrict baseball's growth. I agree with all of that.

Given this offseason it sure feels like those same 6 teams will be there next year. Hard to make a reasonable case for other teams to be there. The Brewers haven't improved nor the Giants. Maybe the Cubs a bit although they lost Contreras. The rest look like they have no shot at all. I think those six teams have a great chance of being there again because they're great teams. There are a lot of super rich owners below them in the standings who are at those places in the standings because they've been in charge of hiring people to assemble teams that are not as good. That will happen in sports regardless of money. The American League is more muddled. The O's finished three games out of the wildcard. How much would it cost for them to add three wins? The White Sox were five games out. The Red Sox and Twins eight. Would keeping Correa's 4.4 fWAR and adding Carlos Rodon's 6.2 make the under .500 Twins a playoff team? Beats me, but if I were Twins fan, I wish ownership would make a run so I could find out.

I admittedly know little about this stuff, but San Diego seems to be doing a lot to squash the market size narrative. I know they have an ocean and palm trees and all that, but they're right in the same mix with Baltimore, Cincy, Pittsburgh, Kansas City when it comes to market size. I don't even know how much SD's owner is worth (his firm is apparently worth $3B anyway), but he's not on any of the same richest guy lists as Cohen, that I know of. And some of the owners who aren't spending (especially the Guardians, whoa) seem to have https://www.gobankingrates.com/net-worth/sports/richest-mlb-team-owners/quite a bit more in the bank than SD's guy. So step up Dolan. You, too, Angelos and Reinsdorf.
  9. Crash Davis was right, baseball is sexy
  10. I didn't read the piece linked in the tweet, but I disagree with the quote. Fans of the Royals, Pirates, Marlins and a few other teams feel they have no chance of making the playoffs pretty much always, but with 12 teams now getting in, most fans probably don't feel that way. The playoffs are realistic for most teams (even smart teams that don't spend shit), and as it's been said here a bunch of times, all of Steve's rich doubloons don't guarantee a WS ring because of the randomness of a tournament full of short series. But if your fav team is built in such a way that on Opening Day it has no shot for even the 11th or 12th playoff spot, well that's not really Cohen's fault, whatever you think of him.
  11. I think he proposed to her on the field after winning the WS?
  12. =metirish post_id=115275 time=1671645448 user_id=72] Thank you , could you please explain how you did that? there is a thread in non baseball
  13. Can someone please post David Axelrod's tweet ? David wants more pluck.
  14. Oops, I missed the OG. Thanks for merging. #RMPL
  15. Sour grapes is gonna sour... Text from nephew in-law-in No Cali, "I hate you." Sour grapes in Nor Cal can make a perfectly mediocre Giants-inspired wine #sickburn
  16. There was a rumor yesterday pre-Otto (as referenced in that thread) that we should now explore. He has a couple years and some money left on his deal, but the particulars of those don't matter in the least, dear reader. Pros: 1) He's Australian which is undeniably fun 2) He's cusses like SO MUCH when he pitches which is as hilarious as it is awesome 3) He's a staunch https://www.outsports.com/2022/6/15/23168732/white-sox-pitcher-liam-hendriks-pride-night-contract-negotiations-lgbtq-allyLGBTQ+ ally, which is needed on the pitching staff now to counter Brooks Raley's ass 4) He's good at pitching baseballs and can be another elite, high-leverage, end game reliever Cons: 1) We'd have to trade someone for him probably 2) [CROSSOUT]Money [/CROSSOUT] (oops forgot)
  17. I love Correa, this is wild. I would bet there are opt-outs, too, but he'll probably just Manny Machado this one and be content to play third base. Yeah, give Baty an outfield mitt or look again at that Alek Thomas trade. Try to find new homes for McCann and maybe Escobar. Sign Liam Hendricks. I'm sure Cohen has some unicorn blood laying around the house. Give it to Willie Mays and he can spell Nimmo in center.
  18. =smg58 post_id=115136 time=1671493875 user_id=62] Baseball player salaries have not risen at a rate commensurate with revenues for about as long as George's kids have been running the Yankees. The younger Steinbrenners fell in line. The Red Sox went on a spending spree a few years ago that correlated with a winning spree, but they have since fallen in line themselves to the point of selling off their most expensive assets (or letting them walk) and angering their fans. Even the Dodgers are not spending the way it looked like they would when their current ownership took over. Is Cohen going to go rogue and stay there, or will he be reeled in too? Only time will tell. And in the meantime, we can laugh at the Yankees for being cheapskates.

Nido looks similar, except with a better pop time and an even brighter red 93 at framing. Not familiar with that scalar. Is red (or a high number) good or bad? Later Yeah, Navarez is in the 89th percentile for pitch framing and Nido the 93rd. Both very good.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: I get it. They're looking for a short-term hedge against Álvarez' development rate and a mentor for Álvarez all in one. Better options rarely come on one-year deals. Spend a few moments with the current alternatives — Kurt Suzuki? Sandy León? — and this deal might look a little better. Yeah, I can get with that perspective. I was clearly pining for more, but have no idea who or what that is. I do like that it signals a cautious approach with Alvarez. If he does supplant either or both of these guys, then great. Everything is icy blue on Navarez's baseball savant page except for pitch framing (a very red 89). Nido looks similar, except with a better pop time and an even brighter red 93 at framing. If nothing else, we should have pretty decent defense from the catchers, and if things go well, league average offense from a Navarez/Nido (and sometimes Alvarez) thruple. Outside of 4 or 5 catchers in baseball where you expect more, maybe this is enough for 2023. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  21. I kinda felt for the guy. He wore his difficulties on his sleeve and when he wasn't right, it really felt like it was wrecking him. May Trevor have a good go of it in Oakland.
  22. Yeah, JCL's sensei idea is the only one that makes any sense? He's better than McCann, so that's good. But you can be better than McCann and still be kinda crappy, as I'm learning by looking Narváez's stats. A platoon of Nido and Omar features below league average splits on both sides. I'm... uh, confused.
  23. Changing topic slightly, Sherman said https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/yankees-have-discussed-outfield-trades-with-twins-diamondbacks.htmlthe Mets were asking the DBacks about Alek Thomas before they re-signed Nimmo. AZ asked for Baty in return (kinda comparable minor league numbers!) but the Mets decided to keep Baty and just buy back Nimmo because money isn't real for Cohen. Considering an alternate universe with Thomas the center fielder of the now and future and Escobar/Vientos at third for this year is kind of a fun exercise. Wonder if they woulda been content with Vientobar? Or try for Justin Turner for a year?
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: Danby Swanson apparently just got married (to USWNT player Mallory Pugh ... quick, draft their kids for whatever sport you want) so maybe that's part of what's delaying his FA negotiations. I wonder if Nomar and Mia Hamm had any athletic offspring?
  25. Memories of Chris Bassitt quickly turned into a roasting of Chris Bassitt and I'm here for it. He was also a red-ass about the quality (or lack thereof) of the baseballs provided by MLB because, duh, he's a captain red ass.
