  1. Dear Charlie, Thanks, kid, that was real nice. Your pal, Baseball
  2. Yeah, I have a free NYT sub thanks to The Athletic, but IIRC it's for 6 months. I didn't know The Athletic was offered free as part of NYT. Which is cheaper?
  3. I we doing this league again? I see it's setup (minus a team?) but beyond that I dunno...

A Boy Named Seo wrote: Ben Verlander also has a crush on my crush so now I'm just not that into him https://twitter.com/BenVerlander/status/1633325379237855238 So, my first WBC crush has apparently defected from Cuba, terminated his contract in NPB and wants to sign with an MLB team. He worked as a reliever with the Dragons. His stuff was good. He's about to turn 26 and in 3 seasons in Japan, he pitched to a 3.03 ERA and 9.7 K/9 (https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=rodrig000yarbaseball-ref). Of all the teams who could use an experienced international reliver with who throws mid-to-high 90s with high spin rate wicked breaking balls NOW!!!!, I'd say it's your New York Mets. 5. I definitely needed that recap. I didn't see a single full inning of Mets spring training this year and didn't see highlights unless I accidentally saw them. I was a full-on WBC fan boi and haven't even asked the boss for the day off yet for Opening Day. Good candidate for fan DFA here.
  6. Minor league contract at 29, that's wild. When he was coming up, he was supposed to be the next Nolan Ryan or some shit. Expectations are a helluva drug.
  7. Jacob deGrom has been named the Rangers Opening Day starter. I wasn't 1000% sure he'd be ready to go. He's thrown just 3 innings so far this spring. Here is deGrom when asked to "explain your damn self already". He offered no comment. https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-photos/image/upload/d_people:generic:headshot:67:current.png/w_213,q_auto:best/v1/people/594798/headshot/67/current>
  8. So this is tomorrow. https://metsamazinday.com/https://metsamazinday.com/ Free admission to stuff with a Mets hat. Merch pop-ups. Dog adoptions. Your very own Mets library card. A relevant hash tag. I think the Mets hat thing everywhere is kinda cool to remind people baseball season is nigh and also maybe, hopefully a bunch of NYers asking themselves "why am I seeing so many damn Mets hats today?" Feels like Amazin Day should maybe have more amazin stuff though? I'm not sure what, maybe roping in ex-players around the city to interact with fans as themselves or undercover? Throw some big event in a park (how's the weather?) that you could tie-in with dog adoption. Get your picture taken re-creating Endy Chavez's famous catch! Get yourself recorded calling Mookie's game 6 grounder! Get a free hat! Win tickets! Meet Tim Teufel or something. Anyway, I'll wear a Mets hat tomorrow in Albuquerque. How will you and yours be celebrating this most real holiday?
  9. I kept waiting for him to say "and it's outta here!!!!' Gary's got the goods.
  10. There's an argument to be made for bunting there, for sure, but even with Betts, Trout and Goldy coming up, getting a run off of Ohtani is very hard, even more so if you give him an out. With Bobby Witt Jr pinch-running for McNeil, you had elite speed at first in a dude who should score on an extra base hit, and a parade of XBH guys coming up. Good recipe. Throw in the fact that Betts also has great speed and hit into only 8 double plays last year (Vladdy led the majors with 26). Well the bunt seems like less of a necessity. With like a 100 years or so of data, we know it's statistically slightly less likely that that a team will get a run across with a runner at second and one out than a runner at first with no outs. So I think DeRosa made the right call situationally and statistically. Obviously it didn't work and credit to Shohei and the defense for rolling over a very unlikely DP. Here's a lil graphic using Tom Tango's work: https://danblewett.com//wp-content/uploads/2017/08/1st-to-second-300x283.png > Here's the article that came from (https://danblewett.com/run-expectancy-bunting-bad/https://danblewett.com/run-expectancy-bunting-bad/) and another that says pretty much the same thing but is interesting anyway. https://www.columbian.com/news/2012/jun/16/bunting-in-baseball-can-be-downright-medieval/https://www.columbian.com/news/2012/jun/16/bunting-in-baseball-can-be-downright-medieval/ Edit: And you said "steal or hit and run" not bunt. Yeah that would've been fun to see for sure.

  12. Just fantastic baseball. Congrats Japan. What an ending.
  13. 4-6-3 and it's down to Trout and Shohei. What a way to end it.
  14. McNeil with a helluva AB against Shohei and draws a lead off walk. Hot damn
  15. Ohtani v. Trout for all the marbles. This is awesome
  16. Maybe he should be. That pop-up did not spark joy.
  17. Paul Goldschmidt: Rally Killer.
  18. oh boy here they come
  19. JEFF MCNEIL ALERT Pull the splinters out of your ass, son, and get a hit
  20. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I'm rooting for Japan Hard not to, they're very lovable. And Trout with his big-ass American flag looked like he got lost on the way to the monster truck show.
  21. =kcmets post_id=120310 time=1679448407 user_id=53] Don't watch baseball on my phone, happy for those that do...
  22. Team USA gets two on and Schwarber pops up to end the rally because he's a warm bag of Philly shit. 3-1 Japan!
  23. Also thank you for coming to my one man show entitled "Seo live tweets the WBC finale on a message board". The Village Voice gave it 1.5 stars.
  24. 20-year old kid almost takes out Mike Trout's knees then strikes him out. Japan keeps squirming out of trouble but the US bats are gonna wake eventually, right? Right?? 3-1 top 5. US trying to make noise.
