  1. I'm all for it, too. I also think tirades and turning over Gatorade bins is overrated, too. Don't think Willie Randolph kicking dirt on the blue is going to make Damion Easley or whoever more likely to get a hit next inning. There does seem to be some real similarities between Jerry's overall placid demeanor and Willie's, and they've worked closely the last few years, so I kinda wonder what change a Jerry Manual-led team would really mean to the Mets at this point. That said, I like pretty much everything I've read about him.
  2. Nice homework, JCL. I was wondering the same about Manuel and my Sox friend sez this, while referencing that same pic in that ESPN article. ]You should expect patience, lots of patience. he preaches about patience, serenity and introspection. lots of bullshit about managing the man within the player, not just the player... He'll also bore you to death talking about how the teachings of Jesus, Ghandi, MLK, nelson Mandella, John lennon, etc. have shaped him as a person. you also won't see too much of this: and when you do it'll seem strange, forced and out of character. All of the above seems to work to motivate young players to be good citizens and teammates (he won manager of the year + the AL central in 2000 with a bunch of kids on the White Sox roster). His message is typically lost on older, veteran guys (i.e. the Mets). baseball-wise, don't expect much. it would be wrong of me to not mention the sweet 1917 World Series throwback uni he's got on in the picture. best uniform ever When you add in the fieriness, Manuel sounds like the sticky, men's room romance love child of Willie, Rick Peterson, and Lou Piniella.

  5. A couple of MLBS's at the Dodger/Met games. Colin Hanks (far left) strikes the same pose as his pappy (far right). Swank showed up again this year. Pizza looks good.
  6. Scariest horror movie you'll ever see! IMDB.
  7. Elster88 wrote: A Boy Named Seo wrote: I voted it a 7. The dialogue was certainly over-the-top and kind of Gilmore Girls-ish. But it was still funny (mostly), was built around a very good story, and some of the performances were awesome. Ellen Page and Jason Bateman were great. Garner and Janney kicked ass, too. George Michael may be a one-trick pony right now, but his one trick is damn funny and endearing. I've listened to the soundtrack now and think some of the songs (I'm thinking mostly of that Kimya Dawson girl) were quirky and just the kind of shit a 16-year old girl would latch on to. That's all. And some of the music is pretty cool anyway. The Kinks, the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and "Piazza New York Catcher" by Belle and Sebastian. That's a good soundtrack, people. You guys need to lighten up or something. Swear to blog. The important question is....You watch Gilmore Girls?!? Like you don't? Nah, I used to work for Warner Bros. and the WB Network. Saw lots of that show at work.
  8. Those are bitchin'. Great work.
  9. That seems like a rule I should've learned a long time ago. Thank you. See you all (two) later.
  10. Can anyone get this on the baseball package?
  11. I stayed with a black family in New Orleans and they went to Jazz Fest and enjoyed it at least as much as the white people.
  12. TheOldMole wrote: How was JazzFest? I used to go every year, but not in a long time. I went on Friday and Sunday and we blew off Saturday for a night of debauchery in the Quarter. Friday was better. The forecast called for rain and it kept people away, and when the rain came, it was a nice little cool-off. I didn't know 3/4 of the people playing, but the blues tent and the gospel tents were my favorites. The peeps I was with were hot for Michael Frenti. I wasn't at all, but I was hot for this girl who was hot for Michael Frenti, so I stuck through his set and we closed with the last half of Stevie Wonder, who was great. Keb Mo was the best on Sunday for me. Santana was playing. The Neville Brothers, too. Stuff I didn't really care about (and they had the biggest crowds), but I stuck with my peeps. The smaller tents with the more local, authentic acts were the best. I wish I saw more. Sunday was hotter than hell and humid, too, and there were so many more people, it was less enjoyable for a temperate climate dude like me. I'd go again if I were closer, but skip the big, touring headliners for the real shit on the undercard. The food was awesome. It was just too hot out I didn't feel like eating. I tried some delicious crab cakes, some shrimp creole, and a freaking alligator pie, which looked like a hot pocket, and I guess kinda tasted like one, too (a chicken one). Can't win 'em all. The red beans and rice was A+. Keb Mo way back there somewhere:
  13. Was in New Orleans for Jazz Fest (and to woo me this Memphis Belle), so I missed the first two games, but went out today. Opera Singer was doing the anthem again and she picked this game and me to go with her on the field. She's pretty cool, that Opera Singer. Same deal as last year, if some of you remember. You enter in the area where the office-type employees go to work every day. They gave us our passes, got the Opera Singer some water and stuff, we goofed around for a minute, and then they took us up to the press booth for her sound check. The Dodger Stadium escort this year was super friendly and talkative and a cutie pot-pie in her own right. Corie, I think it was. Or Korey. Something like that. Here she is next to this kid Brock I'll tell you about later. Hummina, hummina. I told you guys last year about the bullpen cart, I think. That thing's cool. I told cutie pot-pie how much I dug it and she said she told the higher-ups to bring it back, but nothing came of it. I told her to push harder. They weren't ready to listen maybe. So, sound check is up in the press booth where Dodger organist Nancy Bea Hefley and (and her ever-present husband of 50 years) does her work. I walked in the same time as Howie Rose and said kind of excitedly, "That's fucking Howie Rose!", but I said it quietly and no one heard me, I don't think. I saw Rob Reiner coming into the can as I was leaving and found that quite a bit less cool. Anyway, here's a shot. Not of Reiner's Meathead, but Opera Singer warming up. A little blurry, this one. We went down to teh field next for her second sound check. They had her show up later this year so we missed all of BP, which I'm not gonna lie, sucked a little. Kid got a little sassy on her second run-through. She kicked just as much ass, though. Two peeps threw out first balls, some chick from "Friday Night Lights" I'd not heard of and some guy who used to be some kind of equipment manager for the Mets, but is now affiliated with the Dodgers, I think. His Dodger jersey only said "JT" on the back. Can't remember his name. All the Mets guys knew him and were up on the rail booing him and laughing and someone even lightly chucked a baseball out at him. Tommy Lasorda was his catcher and dropped the lollipop JT looped at him (blurry, too). It's about noontime now, so she's gotta sing. She steps out by the big "LA" behind home plate and just belts out a fucking gorgeous opera-tinged (but not full-on opera) National Anthem. Sparse crowd right at 12PM, but enthusiastic and appreciative. As soon as she was done, that kid Blake from earlier ran up and gave her a huge hug. It was pretty cute. He showed up to the game with his dad, who skipped work and had the kid skip school to they could watch a little day-time baseball. Is that nice or what? So he takes the kid down to get autographs before the game and some girl, maybe cutie pot-pie, asks the kid if he wants to kick the game off NASCAR-style by shouting "Time for Dodger Baseball!" as they players start their engines. Dad's completely excited and tells me he's been a Dodger fan over 40 years and can't get over that he's standing on the same field they play on. I tell him his kid'll now be a Dodger fan 40 years from now, too. Then Blake stomps out, two-hands the mic like some speed metal frontguy and screams, "Time for Dodger Baseball!" like Vin Scully never could. Kid's even got eye-black on for chrissakes. Hard-core. Cool, let's play ball then. We're ready to head to the seats when David Wright comes out for a game of catch with Marlon Anderson. He's like 30 feet away and cutie pot-pie likes him just as much as me and Opera Singer do, so we all hang out and I start snapping pictures. Davey starts stretching it out and moves closer to us. 20 feet or so, then maybe 10 feet away. Then, like 5 feet away. The girls' jaws have dropped to the perfectly manicured grass and I'm acting gayer than Charles Nelson Reilly, too. Even closer. Closer still. Josie steps out to start the game. We finally have to leave. Here's our seats. Not too bad. What else? I got the kid to go Mets for a minute. Here she is Chad Cordero-style. Her Met-love didn't last. Here's us about to throw-down before the game. I'm the hobo on the right. Her: "Let's get a picture." Me: "There's a game being played, girl. C'mon, Churchie!" (PS- $12 bucks for that stupid beer.) So that's about it. Mets kicked ass. John Maine was awesome. Me = happy. Her = faking sad. Walking out, she gets cheeky with Gibby and I stare down Mike Marshall. Not that one, the other one. That's it. Good night, kids.
  14. Too late. I've already committed to laundry. Plus, I've been nuts for years. Thanks anyway.
  15. What the hell am I going to do now?
  16. ="Benjamin Grimm"] I also had the Braves telecast yesterday (first time this year I didn't get SNY on my Extra Innings package) and during the telecast the Atlanta announcers were marveling at the amount of local media. The Braves have only two beat reporters, one for the Journal-Constitution and one from MLB.com. They both do have to file stories every day, but with less of a din from other writers, I wonder if there's less pressure to make meaningless noise? (The only way to know, I guess, is to closely monitor what the Braves beat writers write, but I have no interest in actually doing that.) I agree with that meaningless noise bit totally. I'm not from New York and never lived anywhere close to the east coast and when I'm visiting, I freak out at how much attention and coverage baseball gets there. It's really like nowhere else, I don't think. Not even close in LA, and we're a pretty big city and all. This Delgado thing is meaningless to me, but I think in NY, it means something to a lot of people, no? They're trying to make a story for sure, but it seems there's an audience of people gulping that crap down.
  17. from the KTE: ]I hear what Darling said, and he has a point,...yet i respect what Delgado did there. I taped it and watched last night, but had the Braves telecast. What did Darling say? I kinda figured on that one, F the fans. Carlos Delgado isn't some kicked-around dog happy to have finally made his belligerent owner happy. I've never sung a boo before, but even if I was cheering my bag off for a curtain call, I wouldn't have felt slighted. Would you? Thankfully The Post maintains perspective: ]With thousands of fans brandishing giveaway foam fingers yesterday at Shea Stadium, Carlos Delgado essentially gave everyone The Finger.
  18. ]she was crazier than Church's bunt but she goes to Mets games by herself. Hilarious. That flip-flopped chick sounds like my soul mate. Painted toes or no? Gary and Keith had an inning-long chat about the booing and pointed out the stark home/road splits for guys like Beltran and Delgado and talked about how the Mets were the only team in MLB last year with a better road record than home. I'm sure there's more reasons for that than just booing, but fuck, man, support your guys.
  19. Just finished it. What a fun game. Don't remember rooting so hard for a guy to do well (as much or more than the team) like I did for Figuroa tonight. I knew it, too, when he got down 2 strikes trying to sac bunt in the 4th and I really, really wanted him to get that thing down and he did. And I've got a man crush on Pagan like Dickshot on Duaner circa 'ought six. Great jumps on fly balls. Sharp instincts on the bases. Tall, sleek, and graceful, and man, the dude can fly. I'm on board.

  22. Good start, Rogers. Yeah, Hermida's on the DL. Don't know if they'd throw the lefty Gonzo to the wolves against Johan. Seems kinda mean. DeAza sprained his ankle yesterday and had to be carted off the field. He's prolly out, too. Ross, grab your shit! You're in! Fredi Gonzalez wants Hanley to chill out a little this year and run less. He's 24, but has been banged up some. He just had shoulder surgery in the offseason and some some tweaked hammy's last year, too. Maybe not a bad idea. Still hitting leadoff this spring (4 SB, 3 CS). Nice to see ya again, Mets.
  23. It was pretty crazy. Andruw Jones actually had a put-out on a caught stealing and for the last half of the game, Torre didn't even bother with a left fielder, he just played 5 infielders. If there was a pop-up that wasn't going to be a homer, the left fielder would have time to get back anyway, I guess. The stadium is so awkward for baseball, there was no good place to put the cameras, so you got some weird shots and angles on the home broadcast, which made it fun. 115,300 people. "World Baseball Record" for attendance set. So many bad, bad seats. The local broadcast even did an inning in black and white, which was lame and cool at the same time. Scully had a million stories about the Dodgers time in the Coliseum. Arena baseball:
