  2. Edgy MD wrote: I can make an argument for Bonds and not Clemens. If you accept the generally accepted timeline, that Clemens began juicing after leaving the Sox following a couple of pedestrian seasons, and Bonds began juicing in 1999 following jealousy ver the McGwire/Sosa charade, then Bonds is already a Hall of Famer before cheating, while Clemens is not quite. I can't make an argument for Clemens and not Bonds — at least, not one I can pretend to get behind. I dunno. If you take the view that taking steroids is essentially cheating, then you're saying that its OK to cheat once you've reached a certain level of achievement. What's next? Players with 500 career HR's are permitted to gamble on their own baseball games?
  3. Vic Sage wrote: I have a hard time believing we really are going into the season with Broxton/Lagares as our starting centerfielder. I think they have another move coming. So maybe the fact that they passed on Markakis is a sign that they're aiming a little higher. this is what is known as "whistling past the graveyard." Be desireless in order to achieve nirvana. Also denotes the foolish confidence of someone who doesn't understand the risks or consequences of his situation. It probably applies, this being the Mets.
  4. =Centerfield post_id=1635 time=1548256573 user_id=65] Maybe someday with deGrom. I don't know. Can you make the Hall with 84 career wins and a 1.89 ERA?
  5. Edgy MD wrote: And how bad must he have been that he wasn't asked to wear a glove more? That's speculative. It was his manager's job to deploy him. It was his job to perform. And he did. Even after https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1086&position=3B/DH#valuedocking him for not playing defense year after year, Fangraphs still credited him with 65.5 fWAR. His career DWAR was -9.0. And that is for the (roughly) 27% of his potential innings played. That projects to -33.33 for a career, or a net WAR (65.5 - 33.33) of 32.17 if he had played in the field for his entire career. Later Oh. So now we're projecting? Because Martinez's full career isn't enough for you? We're supposed to evaluate HOF candidates on what they might've done? If Bud Harrelson played for 900 seasons, he'd project to having hit more HR's than Hank Aaron. Jesus H. Christ on a stick. Tbe DH has been around for almost half a century and EM is probably the greatest DH in baseball history. He didn't field? And Tom Seaver couldn't hit. (lifetime.154 BA). Fans are smart enough to make adjustments for position. EM's career fWAR is about the same as Gary Carter's. You think Carter would be in if he racked up his hitting stats as a left fielder. No. He'd be off the ballot in six minutes and you wouldn't ever again hear a peep about his HOf case. But fans are smart enough to adjust becaus they know that the position is so demanding that catchers wear down earlier. They'll make the same adjustment for DH as they've been making for catcher and shortstop and relief pitcher.

  9. I had written Wright off two years before that last game. You think the Red Sox would've kept third base in limbo for two years, what with the lethal offensive production a big market team has the right to expect from that position? What a pathetic franchise this is under the Wilpons.
  10. 35 year old whose best season of his career came last year. Maybe he's the next Daniel Murphy career-arc wise. Who the hell knows anything?
  11. I dont get that cover either. Maybe if there was a comma after "Rainin'", it'd make more sense, but only a tiny bit more.

You asked whether the Yankees or Dodgers would have carried someone like Lagares the past 4 years. SMG58 simply pointed out 2 comparable ( though better) players to Lagares that the Yankees have continued to carry on their roster. Granted, with the Yankees offense, they can afford to carry a defense first centerfielder much better than the Mets.
  13. The NL team from NY can't pursue baseball's best free agents yet the owners are allowed to continue to run the team.
  14. =Centerfield post_id=750 time=1546874166 user_id=65] I like the picture in Gsell, but I don't like the pun or the blue insert into the headline.
  15. With Harvey and now Plawecki gone, who's gonna be there to give and get the big black dildo?
  16. I've had it up to here already with Lagares this and Lagares that. The guy was made irrelevant as soon as Cespedes was acquired and went Babe Ruth nuts four seasons ago. Four seasons ago, ferchrissakes! On hitting alone, Lagares doesn't even deserve to be in the major leagues, let alone playing for the team in the world's biggest market. But let's write another million posts about this guy so we can reminisce about the great catches he used to make back in the Hoover administration. You think the Dodgers or the Yankees would've kept this guy around for the last four seasons?
  17. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Well, I haven't voted for either yet, but I'll say it: the Wright cover has a dumb headline. The pun is too cheesy and not clever enough to be IMO a true TCD winner. I also don't like that they change the coloring AND italicize half the headline. Just do one or the other! I also think the Newsday cover is flawed fwiw: I don't like it when the subhead continues a headline instead of illuminating it, but they made that problem for themselves by choosing a pun that boxed them in to having to do that. I didn't support either of these covers as they advanced through the ranks I don't think, and I'm gonna hold my nose and vote for one now. WHY DO YOU HATE DAVID WRIGHT, LUNCHY? It looks like upliftingism isn't dead after all. Me, I've been hating David Wright ever since 2012. It's not even Wright's fault. I've been taking it out on Wright that the Mets chose to re-sign him. Jeez, Sandy Alderson at the top of his game, getting top prospects Wheeler for Beltran and Syndergaard for a 39 year old knuckleballer, god only knows what kind of studs Sandy woulda hauled for the Mets if those idiot moron Wilpons didn't fucking meddle and let Sandy do what any sentient human being woulda done --trade David Wright. I guess the Wilpons were worried that if Wright was traded, the fan base would then hate the owners.

  19. The Pest https://nypost.com/2019/01/03/new-york-daily-news-eliminates-sports-editor-position/covering its decimated rival's travails. I hate to say it but it looks like we might be seeing the last days of the Daily News. I don't think I will miss any of their writing, but their back covers are iconic. I would hate to lose them. Also would totally fuck up our yearly derby. I like the old school DN back covers better than the new ones even though the old ones were b&w.
  20. =Centerfield post_id=433 time=1546540551 user_id=65] I don't know if I agree that Cespedes is shot. I think Minaya, like the rest of us, have no idea what he will be and when he will be back. It's nice to hear him say it though. That Brodie press conference from a few weeks ago was worrisome, when he started talking about adding Cespedes at the deadline. Once you start counting on that we're in really big trouble.
  21. It's 5-3 Badness. I guess the uplifters haven't voted yet.
  22. =Fman99 post_id=328 time=1546455975 user_id=86] Assuming Bryce & Machado are going elsewhere....
