  1. "Maturity at Last?" Jeez, Tug looks like a toothless old geezer on that cover. Hey --wasn't that a question better suited for the Mets?
  2. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Did the Mets own the rights to the games that aired on Channel 9 decades ago? Or did WOR own them? If so, the ownership of the games would have passed to whatever corporate entity has inherited whatever WOR used to be. I guess it depends on the language in the contract. I'm guessing that today, a team would retain rights to its local broadcasts. Maybe back then, this right wasnt considered as valuable. Heck, game films weren't even preserved. They taped right over old games.
  3. Don't the Mets automatically own the rights to any.Mets broadcast? A network couldn't broadcast the game in the first place without the Mets permission. Maybe there's some waiver for national broadcasts.
  4. Steven Matz was only the 5th pitcher in MLB history to give up at least eight runs without recording an out. Of the five, one was a Met - Bobby Jones. And another was an ex-Met, Paul Wilson, who did it twice.

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I like the picture of Gooden but text boxes on the Digest cover are a little too heavy I'm considering disqualifying Piazza because that was a "fake news" cover: Not a "real" issue of SI but a special project intended to cash in on advertsing $$. May have skimped on content inside. Like the "Redbird" though -- miss them. Countrywide -- LOL The Piazza WS SI was a regional cover issue. A Yankeee version featuring Jeter on the cover was also prepared. The inside was identical to that week's national SI, other than regional advertising, if any. https://cdn-s3.si.com/s3fs-public/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0911/mlb.derek.jeter.covers/images/derek-jeter.006274397cov.jpg> National cover https://www.sicovers.com/content/images/thumbs/0002341_rich-gannon-of-the-raiders.jpeg>

  7. About two weeks ago, me and a friend had like a 10 or 15 minute conversation about this movie. I like that you started a thread about an "old" movie. I wish youse all would do this more often.
  8. Is Campy doing an Eddie Gaedel imitation? https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/A9cAAOSwCWNcK7P7/s-l1600.jpg>

  11. I read about a week ago that some of his teammates had nicknamed Alonso '"Polar Bear ".
  12. Edgy MD wrote: I think of him as an Expo, as between him and Bill Gullickson, there was always a good chance we'd catch a 'son in a series against the Expos. But he was a part of that great 1985 Cubs rotation where every one of them was a retread that suddenly all recaptured their magic at the same time. It seemed like the best makeshift cobbled-together rotation I'd ever seen. Lucky punks. Good memory. I played in a 1985 Strat-O-Matic NlL draft league. Sanderson was my back of the rotation stealth pick. He didn't even sniff the leader boards in '85 on account of his 121 IP's, but pound for pound, he was damn good that year.
  13. Was your father a fan of the 1960 Yankees?
  14. Edgy MD wrote: You guys are crazy. I can't think of anything good about that Johnson cover. He doesn't even have a hairy forearm like Shamsky. I have a real bug in my pants about Spring Training shots. They compose these shots as if, "God dammit, here are the METS doing METLY things — you may now stare with wordless awe" ... but they're all shown in fake mesh Mets uniforms in a fake Mets ballpark. Here, Gary and Darryl inexplicably join Dwight on the mound, posing on either side like they're mob collectors about to kneecap him. At least the Sadecki Spot photos featured the players in real Mets uniforms. Plus, where the hell is Keith? Looks like Camera Carter's already getting more credit than reigning runner up MVP Keith, just for getting there after, rather than before Keith. And he hadn't even played a single game as a Met yet. Those TV Guides are, collectively, a quadritiptych. It's hard to tell from those images which are on the dark side (even accounting for the fact that those TVG cover photos are Intentionally dark) but if you line up the TVG's in the exact reverse order from which they're presented, the backgrounds connect to form a Shea Stadium backdrop.
  15. =kcmets post_id=6902 time=1554940638 user_id=53] =batmagadanleadoff post_id=6890 time=1554927506 user_id=68]he fucking sucked the life out of that team.
  16. I went with Shamsky and Hutton on Bazaar in what's looking like a lost cause Jill Stein-type vote. Because I fucking love it when a Met who might not even be the 10th best player on his team makes the cover of a national magazine. This could've only happened in 1970, with the Mets, riding high from the previous year's miracle, were still the darlings of the whole wide world. The Best Infield cover surely has the gravitas over Bazaar. And John Olerud is on my very short list of all time favorite Mets. But points deducted for those hideous black things they're wearing, which never get better with age. And more points deducted for Rey Ordonez, who, I'll give him credit, at least belongs on a cover that's about defense only. So no one's trying to work into the bargain that he is or was also one of the best shortstops period. Because he fucking sucked the life out of that team.
  17. Pete Alonso sets a modern MLB record, becoming the first player in modern MLB history with 11 extra base hits in his first 10 games.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: Rick Reed needs one. Johnny Franco wouldn't let him have one. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D3egdfDWsAA4BCy.jpg:large> Here's the missing image because, like most college hoops fans, your brackets were messed up. In the end, Rick Reed was a two-time all star who made about $30 million from baseball. Good for him. John Franco could go and fuck himself -- a selfish prick who thought that the main purpose of the Mets was to create an atmosphere for Franco to accumulate saves.
  19. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I don't even know what's to argue. It's a good article about a mysterious but real thing. There's nothing here to argue, really. Only to discuss. Except for Ceetar, who can't see past the thread title and is having mental breakdowns over it. He's one post away from telling us how beautiful the Citi Field scoreboards are. And it looks like this thread has morphed into two separate discussions: one about the WSJ article itself and one about cavernous stadiums in general. Not parks that might slightly favor pitchers, but cavernous stadiums like the original CF and the Astrodome. And as for those inside the parkers and triples, it's true that cavernous stadiums will yield a few more of those, but not nearly enough of them to overcome the would-be doubles and HRs that would be lost -- converted into outs because the outfielders have an extra 10 or 30 feet to run those balls down.

  22. =Ceetar post_id=6488 time=1554485754 user_id=102] Why are we so sure it wouldn't affect EV? It seems to infer that most of the 'wind' is out in the outfield, but is that true? It hasn't been windy any of the times I've been on the field, but swinging into the wind has to impact bat speed right? Humidity would be the other thing, but you'd hope they'd be able to measure that?
  23. Caverns reduce offense. There's no getting around that. The less runs, the more luck. It's no coincidence that the Dome Astros spent virtually their entire history not straying too far from .500 ball.
  24. =G-Fafif post_id=6331 time=1554380804 user_id=55] Perhaps it's coming up in a later round, but that Dead End Kids photo appeared to have been culled from a shoot for New York magazine in 1988 when Doc and Darryl appeared on the cover in that pose in advance of the NLCS.
  25. =41Forever post_id=6325 time=1554379166 user_id=69] The Dead End Kids is heartbreaking, and the silly cap pose doesn't help.
