  1. If it's New Years, you know there's a Twilight Zone marathon on somewheres. Here's a Mets Twilight Zone reference from the SyFy channel I was onto for decades. I never posted it before because I figured someone already did. In A Kind of Stopwatch, (S5E4 - October 18, 1963) McNulty the bore comes into possession of an unusual stopwatch that, when he clicks it, stops the world. Everybody and everything but McNulty is frozen in time. Another click and the world resumes moving and going, etc., etc. This episode isn't necessarily my favorite but I like it and it does get me to daydreaming quite a bit whenever I view it. Anyways, it takes McNulty the whole episode to finally figure out that he could stop the world, walk into a bank and leisurely take as much money as is there. Until then, he uses the stopwatch mostly to commit silly pranks -- like going to the Polo Grounds to watch a Mets game, and stopping the world to move second base closer to Ron Hunt to allow for the Mets rookie to steal second base safely. Hunt's rigged steal proves decisive as Snider drives him in with the game's winning run. OT -- the IMG function isn't working too good. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. And the IMG link's not there. Neither is the FIMG link.
  2. This reminds me of Sid Caesar showing off his improbably long tongue --- I don't recall if Caesar actually had a long tongue or if it was just a prop for a sketch he was rehearsing --- but the punchline to this is Milton Berle cracking everybody up with the line: "with a tongue like that, you don't need a cock." Oh yeah, the tongue. Five days into this thread and still, nothing about Callahan's freaky tongue from any of youse -- which is the only thing I remember about him. https://s.ecrater.com/stores/156178/5ac59a63bd9dc_156178n.jpg> https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7816/31623683447_87e573a117_z.jpg>
  3. Heady Eddie is cool.
  4. Happy new year, youse typewriters. Hope we got a functioning search engine.
  5. I'm pretty sure any remaining David Wright cover would be the odds on favorite to make it to the finals. That cover could have a picture of a pile of shit and Donald Trump's vomit on it and still win so long as it's about Wright's farewell. Which reminds me of that Hallmark movie about the handsome baseball player trying to come back from a terrible back injury. On his way to the stadium for what would be his last game, he rescued a kitty cat from a tree about as tall as the Chrysler Building and then he helped a pregnant woman who was having a baby in the street. When it was all over, the kitty cat from the Chrysler Building tree licked the new mommy on the face and then the mommy adopted the kitty to take home with the baby. When the movie was over, I had to go out and sing Christmas carols door to door to stop myself from crying all over myself.

If we're voting solely on the events being depicted, then why bother even showing the newspapers? They seem to be superfluous to some of youse. Maybe Grimm could just tell us, in words, that one cover is about a Nimmo game winning HR and the other is about Jake's Cy Young award. Why even bother with that much info? This tournament would play out just the same without any pictures. All Grimm's gotta do is tell us that one cover is positive and the other one's negative.
  7. Omigod! There's so much uplifting going on with these two covers that I don't know how I'm gonna vote. I think my head's gonna explode from all this uplifting. It's one cover where the Mets did something positive against another cover where the Mets did something positive. And the positives are cancelling each other out. Not like when there's a positive cover against a negative cover, where I can just ptooh ptooey on the negative cover all on account of the negativity. I think I'm gonna take the Delorean for a spin back in time to figure out which of these two games uplifted me the most.

  9. Maybe he's saying "Jerris", but with a Spanish accent.
  10. You get what you pay for.

I guess people would rather vote for a hideous David Wright cover over a Picasso of a back page because one is supposed to be "uplifting" or because Wright's such a fan favorite while the masterpiece depicts a negative event. To each his own, I guess.
  12. Might as well offer them Plawecki for Realmuto straight up because the Marlins accepting just Nimmo is about as likely as a Biden/Romney ticket.
  13. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Why do youse say that? This depends on what youse think Realmuto'll do over the next two years. If he can repeat 2018, he's probably worth it. And he'd command a fortune after that, that the cheapskate Mets might not meet. He's also a catcher and 30 ( what he'd be in his 1st year after FA) in catcher years is like 33 or 34 in regular baseball years. First, you have to figure out what you want out of this. What your goals are. Are you trying to give the Mets the best chance at winning the WS in the near future or would you rather have exciting players for many years that might not contend because to seriously contend, you need solid players everywhere, even in the 6th and 7th batting order slots. If you think you're in a small window to .make a serious run, then there should be a sense of urgency to this.

  16. What an embarrassment for baseball. That guys like Baines and Joe Carter were even on that ballot is a disgrace.

  18. And what's next after that: a curve ball ban?
  19. You could say the same thing about Edwin Diaz. The FA market is loaded with quality relievers. You dont have to give up Kellenic and Dunn for a good reliever. And the idea that you blocked the Phillies is just as dumb because they can go out and buy Miller or Familia or any of the others.
  20. batmagadanleadoff wrote: The argument for Realuto, if you buy it, is that catcher value is scarce, and that it would be easier to replace Nimmo or Conforto's value at corner outfield than it would be to find a catcher as good as Realmuto. It's not necessarily about whether Realmuto is better than Nimmo or Conforto straight up. The theory is sound. You just have to figure for yourselves whether this trade will work. Btw, the Mets catcher production last year was abysmal. So the position is ripe for improvement. improvement. Just to illustrate, Realmuto's WAR last year was 4.9. That's all star, borderline MVP level production. How many other catchers WARred at 4.9? How many corner outfielders?

  22. How could you not love The Murph? What if he played for the Yanks before coming to the Mets? Like Curtis Granderson. Or Rickey Henderson.
  23. What's the point of trying to figure Jeff out? He's a fucking idiot.
  24. Who the hell is gonna want Cano years from now? It's pretty much a lock that the Mets bought the part of Cano's career where he becomes a crappy unplayable scrub.

Such contracts, with games played incentive targets, have been done before. But with Travis' injury history, I'd set the first plateau at one game. And his agent would set his first response as "Get stuffed." Contracts come with risks. Non-tendering is always a tough call. You beat me to this. The only way d'Arnaud would accept something like this is if the contract was equal to or greater than what he'd get being tendered, which defeats the entire purpose of non-tendering. I dont think that this proposed contract is even permissible under the CBA.
