  1. And I bet the Angels also honor that stiff we sent them for Fregosi. Duh.
  2. The Angels honor the heck out of Jim Fregosi. They even retired his number. And I believe Ken Boyer is one of the Cards. Eddie Murray for the O's. And the lone Indian would be Robbie Alomar.

Better than anyone on the team not named Yoenis. Next best is Neil Walker, 1 HR every 18 ABs. And as I type this, Kelly Johnson moves into third with 1 home run every 15 ABs.
  4. We've been doing pretty well in games where the starting pitcher can pitch seven no-hit innings or more.
  5. I was thinking good contact hitter, close game, late inning, pitcher generally demonstrating ability to throw strikes. I think it's clear that if the pitcher has no command, you take on 3-0 and let him beat himself. But I think "take on 3-0" is considered almost a blanket strategy - maybe once in a while a slugger will swing 3-0 in a situation where a home run is needed. So what I'm really asking is whether 3-0 should really be a take in almost all situations, as I think it is now.
  6. I've always meant to start a thread for general questions about strategies that seem to be received wisdom but don't always make sense. Here's a basic one. Why is 3-0 considered to be a "take all the way" count while 3-1 is considered to be a "hitter's count"? The situation is similar in both cases. The hitter has the upper hand, and the pitcher is generally stuck with little choice but to throw a fastball down the middle rather than take a chance with throwing breaking stuff or attempting to hit a corner. It could be that if a pitcher gets to 3-0, the thought is that he can't throw a strike no matter what, particularly since if he were capable of throwing a strike, he would have done so on 2-0. But most major league pitchers can throw a strike in situations where they absolutely have to. So with a good hitter up, why not swing on 3-0?
  7. I stayed off the board and watched the game on MLB.tv this morning. Possibly the worst game I've seen the Mets play this season. How they weren't winning 10-4 by the end of the 4th is beyond me. Ray was awful, and the Mets kept letting him off the hook. I should have just read this thread and saved two hours of my life.
  8. Howie says that Ryan Schimpf was "Rookie of the Month" for July. Apparently, that's a thing, and has been since 2001.
  9. He's no longer faced the minimum. But the game has reached the point where people may want to start watching.

  11. Todd Zeile OE - nope, he hit 22 for the Mets in 2000.
  12. 6) Angels - Rod Carew?
  13. 3) Hammerin' Hank played with the Braves and Brewers. was forever and always a Detroit Tiger. 6) Indians - Eddie Murray?
  14. OK, leadoff hitter on. Don't bring me down, Bruce.

Vaguely familiar from when I still had cable and still lived in the NYC area.
  16. I think this is obligatory. [youtube:3dfolbge]iPuHZjr3F_Q[/youtube:3dfolbge] Seriously, good knowledge. I was thinking about driving to Detroit for the game, but have other plans this weekend. Detroit is also something of a Scrabble mecca; many of the top players lived in the area when I played in a few tournaments in the late '90s. My enduring memory of Michigan - other than Sleeping Bear Dunes - is being stuck for three hours on a train in Battle Creek en route from Ann Arbor to Chicago. There's a statue of Tony the Tiger in the train station, which I'd like to never see again.
  17. Funny, I was thinking the exact same thoughts, but directing them at Hansel Robles. Though that last run came in on a wussy infield hit that a good shortstop would have had a shot at. So maybe there's some hat for Flores, too, who wasn't much help at shortstop and also managed to make six outs in four at bats. And then there's Jay Bruce. Nuff said. So many "fuck yous" to go around for last night's game. Matz, at least, got himself together. I got home in the middle of the third and didn't see the six runs he gave up, which is maybe why I'm feeling more charitable towards him.
  18. Well, if you get a cramp, don't come crying to me. The trade happened, though Bruce isn't in the lineup today. Don't know if that means he's on a plane right now or if he's sitting against the lefty. This is puzzling, given that we deliberately traded for a 2B in the last year of his contract to make room for Herrera in 2017. Herrera wasn't having an awful year in Vegas. If Céspedes' quad doesn't heal, the Mets aren't very good, even with Bruce. And if Céspedes' quad does heal, Bruce doesn't fill a need.
  19. Yeah, I'm rather puzzled as to what's in this for Pittsburgh. If they kept Melancon and he walked at the end of the season, they still get a 1st round pick as compensation, no? And Pittsburgh has been hanging in the wild card race, with Melancon as a key contributor.

The word was that he wanted the $5.25M club option for 2017 waived. I don't know if the deal is necessarily kaput. The Tribe is running away with the AL Central, but they're doing it with their starting catcher out for the season and his main backup batting .080. They need a catcher for a 2016 playoff run more than the Mets do.
  21. Oh, shit, I"m on delay with MLB.tv. Now I get the "fucking fucks". Fucking fuck.
  22. Amazing inning. Just amazing.
