  1. The report was that the bone bruise wasn't better, but he was going to come back anyway, which made no sense. With Carroll's explanation, the plan seems to be to gut it out for 2009, then rest, and if it doesn't get better, opt for micro fracture surgery.
  2. Grain of salt recommended, but here's the story: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9316 He cites no sources, and he isn't a doctor, but that analysis seems to jive with the reports we've been getting that the bone bruise isn't getting better. And even if it were, there's no way to address the lack of cartilage that led to it in the first place. This is by far the worst news I've heard in 2009.
  3. To sweep? Yes. So is the second.
  4. The cynic in me wonders if the press conference was held (rather than a simple press release) specifically so Omar could (whether instructed or not) attack Rubin.
  5. It's been a long time since anyone was able to say "Sign Barry Bonds. He'll improve the outfield defense."
  6. ="Edgy DC":ydwg6hxe]Died of complications after hip surgery.[/quote:ydwg6hxe] Mets' medical staff estimate this could keep him out of action for 2-3 weeks. Met Hunter Jul 22 2009 12:05 PM ="Edgy DC"]="seawolf17"]Dammit! These guys need to stop dying before I can get them to sign cards. What's killing me is that we're getting reports of their deaths days or weeks later. What the hell?! These are Mets. I track these things somewhat, for my autograph pursuits. Two of the longest unreported Met passings, in my memory, were Mike Bishop and Danny Napoleon. Bishop was about 3 months. Napoleon was about a year and a half before there were any reports. Talk about gone and forgotten. Don't let Tony B. represent the team at the funeral.
  7. It's a Bull Durhamish day.
  8. Stokes - 1 Parnell - 1
  9. Getting back to Tony, not that I know if any of this is true, but you have to be impressed by the sheer number of rumors floating around about a mid-level executive. 1. Spoke "Street Spanish" to Delgado. 2. Undermined Randolph 3. Undermined Manuel 4. Two profanity laced-tirades in one week. One shirtless.
  10. Full disclosure here, when I was arguing with Edgy about the Franceour trade, I was shirtless too. And flexing while I typed.
  11. I didn't mean to re-hash the Delgado/Texiera arguments again. I realize the degree of difficulty was high on that one. I just wish we had a GM that was willing to explore it and not be constrained by "We are set at first"-type thinking. Similarly, I don't want the Mets to not pull the trigger on a Halladay deal (if one is, in fact, available to them) because of the mindset that "we need bats". We do need bats. But if we can get an ace, we should look to get that ace, then get bats with the money freed up when Wagner, Putz, Delgado, Schneider and Franceour come off the books.
  12. I'm with you there. I think one time during the 80's the road grays had that too. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. I like the old English New York on all road jerseys.
  13. I obviously don't disagree that this team needs a batter, but that doesn't mean this team doesn't need more pitching. Particularly, ace-level starting pitching. If the lineup were producing, we'd be lamenting having to start Nieve/Livan/Redding etc. The Mets are currently 19th in team ERA, despite playing in a great pitchers' park. I really dislike the notion of passing on good, productive players because "we need ____". This was my problem with not pursuing Texiera last off-season. We never made a run at him because of reasons like "we need to focus on the bullpen" and "we have a first-baseman". My philosophy is to get top-notch talent when it's available. Now that Delgado is likely done after this season, there are few good options out there at first for next year. Thinking that "the offense is fine" is what led to the lack of lineup depth. Which made us particularly vulnerable in the event some top guys went down. So if a 32 year old legitimate #1 is available, make a run at him. If he doesn't ask for the moon and stars in terms of an extension, ship out those four guys and let the Phils face Santana and Halladay back to back.
  14. I would do that deal. I would not drive Pedro Feliciano to Colorado to make it happen, but I would do that deal.
  15. Too bad Delgado's not going to be ready by the deadline. I wonder if he can be a PTBNL or if we can sneak him through waivers while he's in recovery.
  16. There was an article a few weeks ago that suggested that the Mets doctors were not to blame, but rather Mets officials. It cited one case where Dr. Andrews recommended surgery for Putz, the Mets officials overruled, went with cortisone, only to have Putz suck and then have the surgery a few weeks later. There is also the Mets telling Beltran he could continue to play on the bone bruise because it wouldn't get worse (and again, going with cortisone) only to have the bruise double in size. When he was ultimately put on the DL, they said he'd be back in 15 days. We all know now how foolish that was. Delgadot's surgery was delayed (cortisone again) several weeks. There's enough there that the gripers (who are there every season) may actually have somewhat of a case this year.
  17. ="Frayed Knot":1ora9c23]Since we didn't have an official KTE for this series, just a note on where to find the games this weekend Friday: Pelfrey vs Jurrjens This game is at Atlanta's regular starting time of 7:30 (PIX-11 in NY). Not sure why Thursday's was moved up to 7:00 Saturday: Santana vs Kawikami 4:00 EDT for the FOX national broadcast (in most cities) Sunday: Nieve vs Vazquez This is the ESPN GotW but it's moved up to [u:1ora9c23]6:00 EDT[/u:1ora9c23] this week so as to make room for the all-important (hey watch up stroke ourselves) ESPY Awards. The awards show actually took place on Wednesday night but airing the jock & celeb monument to pole-smoking in prime-time is ESPN's gift to the world.[/quote:1ora9c23] What happens if the game goes 15 innings? Frayed Knot Jul 17 2009 07:49 AM ]What happens if the game goes 15 innings? Then we'll hear 3,471 mentions during the game for the upcoming ESPYs instead of the mere 1,247 that are scheduled. 18. On Adam's blog: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/ The worrisome part: An MRI showed Carlos Beltran still has a significant enough bone bruise in his right knee to not be cleared to begin even jogging. "It hasnt gone down sufficient enough to get to an area where he can start sprinting and playing," Minaya said.
  19. Were you able to catch who sponsored the scoreboard? I couldn't quite tell from the pictures...
  20. It's amazing. I've never considered Julia Stiles or Hillary Swank to be particularly attractive. Put that old school Mets hat on them (no orange dot) and suddenly they start pushing Top 5 territory. (falling short, but they're in the neighborhood).
  21. I would say Seinfeld. He's been the most visible with his love for the Mets. Except maybe Tim Robbins, but I think he's kind of a tool. Chris Rock and Kevin James are too notables not in this poll.
  22. If you're a two pitch starter, but pitches are plus pitches. Parnell has a good fastball, ok slider. I see him in middle relief.
  23. I'll send them Jonathan Niese and Nick Evans. They start asking for Argenis Reyes, I hang up the phone.
  24. No joke. It's a headline worthy of the Onion. Story: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4328568
