  1. Is there any evidence he used? (Or is older?) Or is that just speculation because he is really, really good?
  2. 1. Jeter 2. Lincecum 3. Wainright
  3. Let's get Jor El instead.
  4. I may be the only one here, but I like the current uniforms. Drop shadow and all. I think the home whites are the best, followed by the road grays. I even like the black ones. My one and only complaint is the orange dot on the hat on the blue hat. I hate it with a passion. And I can live without the pinstripes. I didn't like the swoosh or the racing stripes. I will really hate any sort of cream-colored jersey.
  5. I think it's far too simplistic to say that. The reports I've been reading are that the Padres are strapped for cash, and that they cannot build a team around Gonzalez that is a legitimate contender. That is why they dumped Jake Peavy. If they really were serious about a run, you'd think they'd keep their ace. Gonzalez, for them, is a diminishing product. He is their's for the next 324 games. Each game he plays decreases his value. If they keep him for the year, no one will want to give up anything for value unless he agrees to sign an extension. Plus, he could have an off year or get hurt. I think there is a very good chance he will be moved this winter, when his value is at its highest. And if the Red Sox package of Bucholz etc. was in the ballpark, I think the Mets can match or beat that.
  6. I wonder if some people have more hours in their day.
  7. There will always be a reason to hate the Yankees. If Gandhi were the owner and Mother Theresa were the GM, they'd still be the most evil, vile and despicable team in all of sports. So let's put that to rest. I do worry that without Hank and George, the knee-jerk, tantrum-like bad moves are now a thing of the past and they will be spending wisely from now on. And that would be bad.
  8. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the Mets #1 priority this year should be Adrian Gonzalez. He is better than all of the free agents out there. He is the most complete player among those that are available, and those rumored to be available. And he could not fit any better into the Mets' needs. Of course, San Diego is going to have something to say about it...but between Niese, Fernando Martinez, Mejia, Maine, Ike Davis, Murphy, and even Mike Pelfrey, I think there is certainly enough young talent to get this deal done. Now I'm not saying we should trade all these guys for Gonzalez, but a package made up of a couple of these guys should be enough to beat what Boston was rumored to be offering this past summer. Some of these young guys are not expected to make significant contributions in 2010, and each of them represents a need that can be more easily replaced through free agency than Adrian Gonzalez. Sure, you'll have to pay more to replace John Maine with Jason Marquis, but you're going to be saving a hell of a lot on your reasonably priced slugging first baseman, who will be under control for the next 3 years.
  9. Anyway, moving on from this fucktardish season... If I'm the GM I do the following: 1. Fire Jerry. Hire Bobbby V. 2. Bring back Benny Agbayani as strength and conditioning coach. Or head of player development. Something. We need Benny. 3. Ask Jeff Wilpon to increase payroll by $40-$50 million. If he says anything but yes (including "I can't make such a decision unilaterally") I go to the press and say Jeff Wilpon is not committed to winning and won't give me the resources I need to build a winner. I'm either immediately fired, or I now have some payroll flexibility. 4. I sign Matt Holliday and John Lackey. Sure, they look like the Carlos Lee and Kevin Appier of this year's weak free agent crop, but what the hell...I have extra money. 5. Trade Niese, Fartinez, Murphy and Maine for Adrian Gonzalez. 6. Two words: Bullpen Car 7. Trade Luis Castillo and Jeff Franceour to the Astros for Carlos Lee. I take the Lee contract (which is getting worse and worse by the year) off their hands. I convince them to take Franceour by hiding his statistics and using terms like "toolsy" and "raw ability". Sure, we end up with two awful outfielders, both of whom have no business in the field at all, much less in the cavernous rightfield of Citi, but what the hell. Outfield defense shmoutfield shmeefense. 8. Remove the orange dot from the blue hat. 9. Sign Orlando Hudson. 10. Re-sign JJ Putz to an incentive-laden deal. 11. Remove that ridiculous fence and replace it with a uniform, 8 foot tall wall. Get rid of that "Mo's Zone" little alcove thingy. [u:34viur01]Lineup[/u:34viur01]: 1. Reyes SS 2. Hudson 2B 3. Wright 3B 4. Gonzalez 1B 5. Beltran CF 6. Holliday RF 7. Lee LF 8. Thole/Santos C [u:34viur01]Rotation[/u:34viur01]: Santana Lackey Pelfrey Perez Redding/Nieve/Some scrub [u:34viur01]Bullpen[/u:34viur01]: Rodriguez Stokes Putz Feliciano Misch Redding/Nieve [u:34viur01]Bench[/u:34viur01]: Whoever. I don't care. Not Marlon Anderson
  10. And I know I turned the thread into an argument about arguing. Sorry. Look, I don't really care if other years were worse for anyone else. As Number 6 says, it's a matter of personal preference. For me, though, this one takes the cake. And I don't believe this is just a knee-jerk, short-sighted reaction.
  11. I think you are. My point was that 2009 sucked worse than other years because many shitty things happened this year. If you disagree, the way to refute that point is to select another year and demonstrate that the sum of shitty things of that year exceeds the sum of shitty things that happened this year. You, instead, listed shitty things that have happened throughout the years, but did not happen this year. That list does little to address my point. The argument that such a list would refute is the idea that all shitty things happened this year. Which is clearly not my thesis.
  12. You're dancing around the point. Bad things happen each year...and certainly more bad things could have happened this year. But because of the points I mentioned earlier, it's tough to come up with a year that sucked as much as this year sucked. And I don't think I'm being nearsighted at all. I'm trying to take a step back and try to look at each season as objectively as I can. Short-sighted statements by others in recent years are irrelevant to my point. 2007 and 2008 sucked. But at least we were in the race and the MFY's didn't win it all. 2003 was surely a disappointing season, but the Braves weren't in the Series, and I had fun watching Beckett shut down the MFY's in Game 6. 2001 was actually fun for a while, and Game 7 of the World Series made me incredibly happy.
  13. Thank god this year is over. I've been racking my brain trying to think of a season that sucked more than 2009 and coming up blank.
  14. Well, then that settles it. Philly has to win. Hey marathon, did you run yesterday? I kept looking for a wind-up robot with a silver towel. On Edit: Running thread. Duh. Sorry.
  15. Now that we know it's inevitable, let's get it over and done with. I'd like for this 2009 season to be over as soon as possible so I can take a piss on it and be done with it for good. If the MFY's win tonight, the 2010 season starts tomorrow.
  16. At the risk of showing how little I'm following in this post-season, why is Pedro starting game 2 instead of Hamels?
  17. Now all I can picture is Mike doing mic checks for Meatloaf.
