  1. It looks like there is no update on Flores. If I'm the Mets, I'd try giving him yet another cortisone shot. Have they tried Robitussin?

Gives off a little bit of a Clippard-y waft for me, insofar as he's put up nice surface numbers while the underlying stuff/eye test don't reveal any real change in performance. I'd be wary of using him in a high-leverage sitch in, say, Chicago. I'd be thrilled just to be in a high-leverage situation in Chicago.
  3. It's strange knowing ahead of time that whatever happens you will remember this game for the rest of your life. Going to be tough to hold back tears tonight. But I definitely want to watch it. If his mother and grandmother are there I'm going to just lose it. This stuff was hard to watch before I had kids. But ever since my kids were born, I'm a complete mess when it comes to this stuff. I don't know how, but the Mets have to find a way to focus on the game tonight. Good luck boys. Also, I am having trouble coming to grips with the fact that despite what happened, a small part of me is glad they are not facing Fernandez. I know it's wrong and I feel like a total dickhead over it. But no matter how guilty I feel about it, the feeling is still there.
  4. Kudos to Joe Maddon for trotting out his A lineup even after having clinched. Not for nothing, but the playoff clubs probably want to see the Mets (and their depleted pitching staff) make it over the other two clubs no?
  5. Details are emerging now about the accident. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2016/09/25/jose-fernandez-dies-boat-accident-details-miami-marlins/91078098/?utm_source=feedblitz&utm_medium=FeedBlitzRss&utm_campaign=usatoday-newstopstories The boat was traveling at significant speed when it struck a jetty. The pictures are horrific. If it gives any comfort to the families, the impact of the crash appears to have killed the victims. They did not drown. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. So dangerous to travel at that kind of speed, at night, when visibility is limited. And yes, if the Marlins had not switched his start to Monday, it seems Jose would have been grieving the loss of his friends yesterday, rather than being one of the victims.
  6. Gotta mention Gsellman here in this thread. With Sunday's performance, he lowers his ERA to 2.56.
  7. Cards threatening. 1st and 3rd. One out. Top 8. Come on Cubs.
  8. If he were pitching Sunday there is no way he's out on a boat at 3 am the night before.
  9. Terrible. No words. Defected from Cuba and was living the dream. How does that happen. He was just a kid. Saw him at Citi this year face off against Noah. It was a work event and we had great seats behind the plate. His stuff looked unhittable. Even better than Thor. Condolences to his family and inner circle. What can you say.
  10. That cost us that game and who knows how many more.
  11. Jay Bruce diagnosed with Jason Bay's Disease.
  12. I wonder if he was sick during his last start against the Braves. Looked like shit.
  13. Pitch this Franco guy up.
  14. Leave Goedell in right? I'd leave anyone effective until they get into trouble. Need 9 outs.

  16. I opened this thread thinking: "Wow, it would be nice if it were already 4-0 Cubs." Then read your score and thought, 3-0 is still good. Then looked up the score. 4-0! Still batting!
  17. I think it would be nice to go into 2017 with the idea that Reyes can backup Cabrera and Wright as necessary. I would not want to rely on him as our starting second baseman. I suspect either he or Cabrera will regress a bit. In fact, I think giving Cabrera/Reyes ample rest by switching off at SS would probably be best.
  18. Hellickson pitched a 3 hit shutout against Miami his last time out. Before that, 6 and a third scoreless against Pittsburgh. We were likely rooting for him to pitch well during both games. Probably will not be a cakewalk tonight, especially with our weakest starter going. Hell, I guess we should not expect anything to be a cakewalk anymore.
  19. Agreed. I spoke to broadly about never seeing him again. It would be great to get him back into gear, but that 11th inning was not the spot for him. Further agree that mismanagement in the prior games helped to create the need to bring him in to replace our main horses, how appeared to be gassed.
  20. Is he signed for next year?
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Not only will we need Big Jim sooner rather than later, there's a good chance we'll need him tonight. Sure. We need him. Now that Matz' arm has fallen off, more so than ever. But just the fact that we need him doesn't mean he's ready to answer the call. Hell, we really need Harvey, Walker, Wright, deGrom and Wheeler too. Doesn't mean we should put them in any time soon.

Jim Henderson who was great for us in April, but has been awful since then, and is getting worse. His pitches seem to have no life and he seems aware of it. He is our worst reliever, particularly in the second half. Except that I could go back over some IGTs, all within the last month, and read demands that we never see [fill-in this guy] comprising just about every bull-penner we have or have had recently. Sure, if you take my statement and lump it together with everyone else's IGT statements, many of them emotional and reactionary (they are IGT statements after all), then the collective call to banish every reliever can be colored as foolish. But if you look at my statement individually, as I intended, it is that I don't want to see Jim Henderson in that spot. Jim Henderson is our worst reliever. It is perfectly valid to state that we should not use (or be forced to use) our worst reliever in that spot.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: Edgy MD wrote: You don't want that. Big Jim was put in an a very difficult situation. And that walk came after several strikes three were effectively fouled off. You'll need Jim Henderson before this is all over. The real problem I had was Terry going to the guys he had taxed over the previous four days, and not giving the Hendus and the Robleses a chance at their own inning or two, instead of having to bail out the gassed front-liners. Plus, if Sandy were to follow our advice and trash every reliever that this place asked never to see again there'd be nobody left in the pen except for Reed & Familia. I'm not asking for every reliever to be trashed. I'm asking for Jim Henderson. Jim Henderson who was great for us in April, but has been awful since then, and is getting worse. His pitches seem to have no life and he seems aware of it. He is our worst reliever, particularly in the second half. Perhaps I spoke to broadly when I said I don't want to see him ever again, but in an extra-innings nail-biter that we have to have? I know it ended well, but imagine we had come up a run short.
  24. Come on Terry. This lineup will score: 1. Reyes 2. Cabrera 3. Cespedes 4. Granderson 5. Duda 6. Rivera (or Kelly Johnson) 7. Conforto 8. d'Arnaud
