  1. So how much rope do you give him? After his "hot" start, Gonzalez has settled in at a .654 OPS with 1 big HR. Started out 3 for 7, but is only 5 for his last 29. You figure the Mets will give him the month of April I guess. Meanwhile, Nimmo continues to rake (assuming you move Bruce to 1B). And the young guys are knocking on the door. Dominic Smith (AAA): 990 OPS. 2 HR. Peter Alonso (AA): 1.284 OPS. 3 HR.
  2. And from what I've seen, it's not something that he can necessarily "fix". He relies on guys swinging at that slider out of the strike zone for outs. His fastball tops out around 92 and it's straight and flat. The only way he gets outs is to mix in that fastball and give a steady diet of sliders out of the zone and hope that guys bite. As the league has figured him out, they are biting less and so his walks are up. I don't get it. This is absolutely a case of guys getting fooled by the "closer" label.
  3. And it would be wise to stop thinking that he is some sort of "second closer" to bring into high leverage situations. It looks like he has the potential to be good, having posted very good numbers in 2015. But since then his walk numbers have crept up and his WHIP is through the roof. League average for WHIP is typically around 1.30 to 1.35. AJ Ramos has posted WHIPs of 1.36 in 2016, 1.41 in 2017 and now 1.35 in 2018. He is not a closer. He is a league average pitcher. And he's certainly not worth the $9 million they are paying him. Everyone agreed Hansel Robles was terrible last year right? His WHIP was 1.34.
  4. Big game tonight. Yuge.

Because if the bullpen starts breaking down along with starters that can't get through 6 innings, there's Trouble in River City. Hopefully they shake it off and go get 'em tonight. Right. One game isn't a big deal in the course of a season. It's what happens afterwards. The bases loaded escape by deGrom was a big deal for that game, but it became more important because the Mets went on to sweep. Win the next two and it will be ok. It's just that the pitching matchups aren't in our favor as much as it was yesterday. Ever since I was kid, the Mets will lose a game in April that makes me lose my mind, then remind myself that it's just a game, and that it's a long season and that I should chill the fuck out. Yesterday was that game. Usually it comes much earlier.
  6. Deciding deliberately is fine. Inquiring deliberately makes no sense. The only way you can really assess your options is to know what they are. And if you haven't asked, you are simply speculating. I would think most GM's would ask right away. And if the Mets haven't, I think that's a mistake.
  7. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I wouldn't look into Wilson Ramos because of Plawecki's short-term injury. I'd look into Ramos because of d'Arnaud's long-term injury. I think the Mets should make a move. And I think they will. Exactly right. And if the rumors are true (and I acknowledge that they might not be) and the Rays are just looking for money without a lot of talent back, that's the type of move the Mets have to make.
  8. I disagree. The Mets catchers right now are automatic outs. Why wouldn't you make an inquiry? I can understand not meeting their price right away if they want talent back, but I think you have to call both. (Disclaimer, I have no idea who the Boston catcher is)
  9. And again, Ramos sucks and isn’t worth his salary. Gotta stop going with this walk machine.
  10. All those walks. All the mistakes. I can’t believe this game.
  11. I’m sick to my stomach. It takes stupidity to lose like that. Sickening.
  12. Why the fuck do you go to Ramos there? Gave Familia no safety net. For a guy who said he wasn’t going to save anyone for the ninth, this was some shitty bullpen management.

  14. Understood on both fronts. And I'm not trying to take anything away from what they've done. Just saying that a 9 game winning streak is nice, but it doesn't promise anything going forward.
  15. I don't know. Win streaks are fun and amazing, but like no-hitters, I think they are more fluky than anything else. In 2006 the Marlins had two separate win streaks of 9 games. They won 78 games. In that same year, the Mets biggest winning streak was 8. But they won 97 games. I mean, I guess most teams that win 9 straight are pretty good, but sometimes it's just luck. I'll feel a lot better when the offense gets clicking again and the starters start going deep, and we notch a few 7-1 wins. Hey, remember in spring training when they were like 0 and fifty?
  16. I feel like the 2018 covers could already beat 2017.
  17. These standings are rigged. Guy with the highest win % is in 3rd place?
  18. My weather app says the rain will stop by 6 p.m. GREAT NIGHT FOR BASEBALL.
  19. Jeremy Hellickson pitched to a 5.77 ERA last year. Gotta get this first game. If the Mets bats stay silent we are in for a long series. If I'm Mickey, I play Nimmo and give Cespedes the night off.
  20. Struggling here. The '86 cover stinks, but it has a super awesome piece. But it definitely comes across as a HS kid who didn't do his semester project and pieced it together at the last minute. "Um, I was going for a simple elegance. Um." On the other hand, 1993 is just ok at best. I do like the watermarked images in the back. But it also incorporates a logo that I can't stand. As iconic as the 25th anniversary patch is, that swoosh to me is inextricably associated with losing/disappointment. So it's like trying to be an impartial food critic. Dish 1 was made by a guy who surfed the internet for 17 minutes, then threw on some bacon in the last three minutes. But it's bacon. Dish 2 is a very mediocre stew, with some ok elements. But it features mutton. And I hate mutton.
  21. I feel like it's hard to separate the results. That 25th Anniversary logo has become iconic to me. When I see it, I think World Champions.

  23. TransMonk wrote: I haven't felt this 2015 since 2015. Benjamin Grimm wrote: You know, right before that last pitch, I was standing in front of my TV thinking, "This feels like a game that they're going to lose." Agreed. There have been other wins where I felt that way this season, too. But good teams find a way to win these type of games. It has increased my optimism about this 2018 team. Actually I thought they would pull this out but I can certainly understand why. This team does need to start hitting though.
  24. Now through 5.
