  1. It's absurd, but it's certainly possible. If everything clicks for this team, they can play at that pace. It would be absurdly good given their level of talent, but they've had an absurdly bad record given their level of talent, so they've already proven that absurd is within their wheelhouse.
  2. Oh, and the guy seems much more nimble than last year. And I kinda like how he wears his uniform baggy. Like he insists on wearing his old one to show how much weight he's lost.
  3. Interesting quote today in this article: https://nypost.com/2018/06/22/dominic-smith-isnt-trying-to-do-too-much-and-it-is-paying-off/ “You hear all the talk about how you don’t have power, so you try to do too much and try to hit home runs and that is not really my game,” Smith said. “I can hit the ball out of the park as well, but I hit the ball out of the park at all fields, so it’s definitely something I wanted to be more cautious of this year...I definitely didn’t want to get away from that, because if they are going to throw me away I might as well take my hits, my doubles,” I don't know who is generating "all the talk" but I wonder if someone in the Mets organization was trying to get him to increase his power etc. Could by why he hit 9 HR's last year but only hit .198. To me, leave that all or nothing shit at home. We have plenty of guys who hit .220 and 25 HR's already. Give me a guy who hits .315, gets on base at a .400 clip and hits to all fields. A guy who is a threat to hit good pitching instead of a guy who accumulates his stats against the dregs of a bullpen. 10-15 HR's? Plenty enough. Give me mid-80's Keith.
  4. Dom Smith. Sure, it's a small sample size, and a large part of that sample was in Colorado. But .300/.323/.567 That's an .889 OPS.
  5. I guess so. I don't know. I just feel like they are such a different team with Cespedes in the lineup. And when Noah comes back, if they can just get close, maybe they call up Alonso and he goes on a tear. And I know that "if everything breaks right they can maybe grab a wild card" was exactly the season I was campaigning against in the winter, but given the choice between that and another lost season...
  6. I keep rooting for them to win, but if they win, then they might end up on the fringes of contention by the trade deadline, and hold onto pieces. Like Familia. And then fall apart. That would be the worst thing. But I can't really root for them to lose. I mean, what if they pull off an amazing run? All this indecision is terrible.
  7. Where the hell is Gavin Cecchini when we need him. Still out from that HBP?
  8. Let's fucking win.
  9. Two straight clunkers for Seth. Come on buddy. Prove you belong in this rotation.
  10. Lugo throws harder than 86 on his fastball, so at least he's got that on Vargas. I don't think Seth will go 8 innings 1 run like Jake, but I think he keeps us in the game. Trouble is today's starter for them looks a bit stronger.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: I'm a LOT more pissed at Cabrera than Vargas. He came up in the ninth against a pitcher beating himself as so many Rockies relievers have. Their only current reliever pitching well had already been used, and the Mets were down by four. Against Davis. Who had walked four guys and given up four runs in a third of an inning last time out. So this time, he bears in against the free-swinging José Reyes ... and walks hims! Tying run on double deck. All of Colorado is starting to feel dread and pressure, and when Amed Rosario taps a soft grounder to the best fielding third baseman on earth, he throws it down the line. Up comes Cabrera with the tying run on deck! 100% of everybody affiliated with the sad, sad Colorado cause is thinking "Here we go AGAIN!" Desperate for something, ANYTHING, to avert disaster, Bud Black gets one of his starters up in the pen. It's a starter having a crap year, but it's time poor Bud tries something. He's desperate. And then Davis falls behind 2-0. What you do here is let a guy on his heels beat himself. Plus, any 13-year-old knows that with the tying run behind you in the ninth, a walk is a good as a homerun. It's better than a homerun, because the next guy is facing a more fatigued and demoralized pitcher, with the nuisance of guys on the bags. Next pitch comes in at the shins ... and for some unfathomable reason, Cabrera swung. All Vargas did was fail. Are we ourselves, indeed. I had long since gone to bed when this went down. That is infuriating indeed. But this happens like, all the time with this team.
  12. I like it when sucking lasts longer. Wait, what are we talking about?
  13. “It’s frustrating,” Vargas said of his season. “You get rolling in a good direction and then you have something like this happen, and the start of the season was obviously a disaster.” A quote from this article: https://nypost.com/2018/06/20/jason-vargas-never-gave-the-mets-a-chance/ So that quote from Vargas could mean a few things. The Mets were rolling in a good direction, then Vargas happened, or Vargas had been rolling in a good direction, then last night happened. The second part of the quote, where he says the first part of the season was a disaster, suggests that it's the latter. Vargas seems like a good guy, and I admire that he's made a career out of middling stuff. But if he is talking about his string of 5 inning starts as "rolling in a good direction", then I don't know what to say. His last three starts were all 5 innings, and the ER were 0, 2, and 3 respectively. If that's his upside, with his downside being blowups like last night, then this guy just is not a big league quality pitcher.
  14. That’s it for me. Fuck Vargas. That piece of trash is the embodiment of Sandy Alderson and the Madoff Mets.
  15. This is fun Vargas starts. Robles receives. Maybe we can ask Eric O Flaherty to swing by.
  16. We need to stop this home run barrage. Dave, call the pen. Get Robles up!
  17. I would be fine to never see Vargas pitch for the Mets again. What a fucking joke this guy is.
  18. Vargas getting lit up. What a surprise.
  19. Rosario is not ready yet. Jesus. Can’t hit, catch or throw.
  20. Predictions: 1. When Vargas pitches tonight, there will not be a time when we, like last night, forgot the game was being played at Coor's Field. 2. We will hear "Well a ____ run lead here, is like a 3 run lead anywhere else. Mets just have to chip away and get to that bullpen." 3. After this game, we will hear justification of Jason Vargas that starts with "If you take away that one start at Coor's Field, Jason Vargas has been pretty ok over his last few...."
  21. I know we are all caught up in Nimmo-mania, but can I just express my complete and utter admiration for Jacob deGrom? The guy is so good, I watched this game and actually forgot they were playing at Coor's Field. I mean, I knew it was Coor's Field, but it wasn't "Well that's Coor's Field for you" or "Pitches just don't bite the same way here"...bla bla bla. Just going about his business, calmly limiting them to 1 ER. And for running out that last ground ball and making it that close. Also, the minute his ERA dipped below 1.53, Gary Cohen was sure to mention it. It's funny how we all know that complete line. 24-4. 1.53. 268. 8.
  22. Centerfield wrote: .268/.377/.425 14 HR's. I think there is a glitch in the CPF. Because I clearly remember predicting that Nimmo would have an OPS over 1.000, along with only Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, JD Martinez and FFF. I remember thinking his OB was a real plus and it would be 12 points higher than Jose Altuve's. Totally knew he would be outslugging Manny Machado, Aaron Judge, Paul Goldschmidt, Nelson Cruz, and Giancarlo Stanton. I knew he'd eclipse that last guy buy over 100 points. Knew he'd lead the team in steals, triples, and play great defense.
  23. Ceetar wrote: that call against Smith was bs and the umpires (especially the review crew) should feel bad. Was this call reviewed? Atrocious call.
  24. But is it worth it to clone him if his arm and rib are going to fall apart again? I guess the second time around we'd could trade him before that happens. I think other teams would be on to us though. We'd have to disguise him somehow. "Now pitching for the Mets, Fatt Barvey..."
  25. Edgy MD wrote: I challenge that tag if I'm Mickey. Me too. I was screaming about this last night. It didn’t end up mattering but you have to have to challenge that call. Looked safe to me even on the naked eye. Definitely so in the replays.
