  1. White Sox have been super aggressive this off-season.
  2. Meaning Betances goes from NYY to NYM (reverse) and goes from being good to being out of this world awesome? (also reverse)
  3. I've adopted Luis Guillorme as my irrationally high hopes for a middling-middle infielder 2020. Past honorees include Gavin Cechhini, TJ Rivera and Matt Reynolds. I know that doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but one of these days, fortune will smile upon us.
  4. =Ceetar post_id=28688 time=1576820219 user_id=102] I think plenty of it has to do with Cespedes' earning potential going forward, which is astronomically higher than Ellsbury.
  5. Jake looking like a bona fide, major league hitter there. There is nothing that he can't do. And he looks awesome doing it. The Mops picture is terrific, but they missed a chance to do something with it. I don't like how Noah is in the insert. I love that the Mets completed sweeps and the Yankees are swept in both covers. If your entire knowledge of the 2019 season was these two covers, you'd have thought it was a terrific year.
  6. Betances has the highest upside, but comes with the biggest risk, coming off an Achilles injury that didn't need surgery (do those just heal?). So he's like the super hot, completely psycho, low cut red dress-wearing, probably going to crash your car and leave you for your best friend reliever everybody can't stop staring at. I was going to say Will Harris is more of a plain Jane, but then I looked at his stats and he's pretty terrific. WHIP numbers are great. So I guess he's the super pretty reliever that no one knows is super pretty because he wears glasses and pulls his hair back in a pony tail. 35 though. So those good looks won't be here for long. Hudson's not in the same class. He had a good year last year, but that's the first time his ERA was under 4 since 2015. As recently as 2017, he had a Wacha-like WHIP of 1.459. So I guess he's the fat chick that lost a lot of weight recently, but you kinda feel like he still likes his doughnuts.
  7. His role in the bullpen, like all other roles, should be dictated by his performance. If I had to assign roles right now, I'd say he's the Lugo Off Day 8th inning guy.
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: That said, I think BVW probably means what he says about no more FA relievers. Between Diaz, Familia, Wilson, Lugo, and Gsellman, you really have no place to slot another "main" pen arm unless you're going to clear one of more of the incumbents out and if they were to do that they'd be selling low on several of them (most notably Dia-milia) for a guy you hope you wouldn't be doing to same thing with at this point next year. I'm not sure I understand your math. Even with those 5, there are still two more slots, even with a 12 man pen. You figure one spot has to go to a second lefty, but why is there no room for Betances? On Edit: I guess you have to add the loser of the Porcello/Wacha 5th Starter battle to the pen as well. Still, Betances could be the 12th guy, or the 13th if you want to carry two lefties.
  9. First off, his name. Shocked to find out he's not Dillon Betances, but rather Dellin Betances. Also, walks a lot of batters. Nice ERA and WHIP throughout his career though. Brodie says no more reliever upgrades, but you have to figure he's on the Mets' radar.
  10. =kcmets post_id=28511 time=1576517749 user_id=53] I took Grand but kinda surprised deWire getting almost no love.
  11. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=28512 time=1576518936 user_id=68] What's the deal with the Daily News using the Mets logo to fill in some empty space? Like or no like? I don't.
  12. They could have, and probably should have, but I was pleasantly surprised by the sequel. I hadn't heard a thing about the movie before watching it, so I guess in retrospect kick ass Bo is a little formulaic, but fun and well done. Like other Toy Story movies, it kinda glosses over kidnapping (common theme), attempted murder, and this time they throw in some good old fashioned organ harvesting. I guess in this world, toys are as bad to each other as humans are. Good to know. If in 1995, you wondered why anyone would cast Annie Potts as the damsel in distress, all you had to do was wait around until 2019 to find out she had been perfectly cast all along.
  13. Also. Didn't he come to spring training once riding his horse? I guess it's not cute anymore.
  14. In retrospect, if we didn't want him riding horses, maybe his ranch wasn't the best place for him to hang out.
  15. =Ceetar post_id=28376 time=1576257383 user_id=102] =Centerfield post_id=28373 time=1576257301 user_id=65] Was he? He spends day and night defending and justifying the Wilpons it's hard to tell.
  16. =nymr83 post_id=28380 time=1576259452 user_id=54] Mike Piazza? He was signed 20 years ago before anyone had ever heard of Bernie Madoff. How is he at all an argument for what the Mets do right or wrong now?
  17. Was he? He spends day and night defending and justifying the Wilpons it's hard to tell.
  18. =Ceetar post_id=28367 time=1576243957 user_id=102] =nymr83 post_id=28353 time=1576205732 user_id=54] Ok, I don't literally mean it has to be Cole there. It could be Cole, or Strasburg, or Rendon, or the big free agents they didn't sign last year. the point is htat a big market team with the revenue sources of the New York market should be signing guys like Wacha as backups not as their top signing in free agency.
  19. Vic Sage wrote: and because he's only guaranteed $3m. Wacha's contract isn't without its own risks. If the Wilpons count that as $10M against the tax and don't spend that elsewhere, that's money that's doing nothing that could have been used on the pen. Alternatively, if they don't leave the wiggle room, I guess it's possible that his incentives will kick us over the tax. Imagine Cohen taking over in 2021 and having to pay the second time offender penalties because of the incentives paid to Michael Fucking Wacha.
  20. This is a flyer.
  21. Come on guys. The 2020 projections for Vargas are relevant if I am advocating to bring back Vargas. If I said "Wacha is terrible. I would have spent that money on Vargas". Then you use this argument. That's not what I said. I said, "I'm not sure he's an upgrade over Vargas". Then you look at what Vargas did for us in 2019. 1.6 for us, 1.2 overall. Are these guys likely to eclipse that? Maybe. Is this a stupid low bar to be asking in the first place? Absolutely.
  22. =Ceetar post_id=28303 time=1576180018 user_id=102] Steamer thinks so. 0.8 for Vargas, 1.1 for Wacha, 1.8 for Porcello. fWAR.
  23. Yes, of course. I meant for the 2020 season. I'd gladly go 0-162 if it meant Brodie hasn't traded away any talent and Cohen takes over in November.
  24. Edgy MD wrote: I think it's pretty good bet to count Porky+Wacha in the rotation, if that's how it shakes out, as an upgrade over Jason Vargas. Vargas: IP: 149.2 ERA: 4.51 FIP: 4.76 WHIP: 1.363 Wacha: IP: 126.2 ERA: 4.76 FIP: 5.61 WHIP: 1.563 Porcello: IP: 174.1 ERA: 5.52 FIP: 4.76 WHIP: 1.394 Is it a good bet? Vargas outpitched both in 2019. Wacha with his terrible WHIP wasn't close. Porcello's peripherals were similar to Vargas, but his ERA was much higher. I guess that could be bad luck? Both are young, so they have that going for them, but Wacha has a recurring shoulder injury and is trending downward, so I don't know if I agree with you there. Porcello is more up and down doing that Saberhagen thing. I read that his advanced stats were bad (hard contact rate, spin rate etc). But I guess that could be from the funky ball last year. Point is, both guys were worse than Vargas 2019. And that's total 2019, not NYM Vargas. It's a stupidly low bar to clear, and I'm not sure that either guy does it.
