  1. The Tigers bats sure found an opportune time to take four days off.
  2. LaRoche's slugging percentage is gonna go up about 100 points before the Mets leave town.
  3. Roger McDowell?
  4. I had completely forgotten about David Newhan until last week, when I attended a NY-Penn League game between the Hudson Valley Renegades and the Vermont Lake Monsters. Newhan is managing the Lake Monsters these days. About Catalonotto, I remember the discussion we had at the time that he was the only Met to get one--and only--start with the team, and in that start bat cleanup.
  5. BLOCKBUSTER!
  6. They're not the best comps as players, but another guy who played shortstop, was beloved and overrated by both the national media and his franchise's fans was Cal Ripken. Not looking to argue one's merits versus the other, but I would suspect the votes for Jeter will be similar to Cal's. In 2007, Ripken got 98.5% of the votes (he appeared on 537 out of 545 ballots cast).
  7. There are still "I don't vote in anyone on the first ballot" guys out there. I don't agree with them usually, but if they keep Captain Jeets from getting a unanimous vote, more power to them!
  8. I don't know really whether the innings limit accomplishes what it sets out to do... which I guess is not overworking arms so that they don't break down? Much as I would like to vote "do nothing" I realize that is not just a DeGrom decision; that would have to be an organization-wide mandate and I don't think the org will do that. I'm not sure if they should either...again I'm not really sure whether it accomplishes anything or not. Lots of young guys with innings limits still come down with arm injuries. I'm very much intrigued by 4, and would love to see a team try that. But I suspect it will be either: 3, which I don't really like; 7, which I guess I can live with if the org is going to stick to its limits; or the write in candidate of expanding the rotation. I'd go with expanding the rotation
  9. Bad enough teams are falling over themselves to give him gifts on Jeter's last visit to their towns, but the Reds decided (you know, with all that history Jeter has playing against Cincinnati) that they absolutely had to give him a gift on their visit to the Bronx this weekend. Yeesh. http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article/cin/gm-walt-jocketty-todd-frazier-present-derek-jeter-gift-from-reds?ymd=20140719&content_id=85259860&vkey=news_cin
  10. Maybe it's because I'm a Mets fan, but hasn't the story of the '86 Mets been told enough already? I mean more power to the director, but is any Mets fan out there thinking, "you know, I really need another documentary on the '86 Mets?"
  11. Among all other things to get nauseated about, I don't know why the fact that they used Bob Shephard's recording to announce him is the one that really grinded my gears. [Non-Jeter tangent, if MLB will allow it] Did anybody catch Verducci's Keys to the Game? It was in the top of the second, and the NL was already trailing 3-0. So Verducci decided that the key for the NL--in an ALL-STAR GAME!--were "Productive Outs".

Which is a bit odd in that he's been not playing since Sunday but originally it was described as a sore knee or something like that. Not sure when the supposed concussion came about. Now if I were a cynical guy I'd be wondering if the Yanx are using the shorter DL time in conjunction with the ASB to get him some rest without having to commit to the entire 15 days. I'd also go out looking for a cynical girl. Anyway, didn't help them tonight as the Indians, down 3-0 for much of the game, stuck nine runs up late for the 9-3 romp. He got hit in the face with a batted ball during BP on Wednesday.
  13. I vaguely recall looking up Toronto's futility in the Bronx at some point last year. A quick look around the interwebs reveals that the Jays are 4-27 in the Bronx since the beginning of 2011.
  14. That area behind PetCo is great. One January day on a business trip I walked over and ate lunch on the bleachers right above the sand pit in right center.
  15. Shit. That sucks.
  16. I remember Zim most for seemingly pushing every right button in leading the Cubs to the '89 NL East crown.
  17. I dunno. The guy on the left (a coach?), well let's say this doesn't look like it's his first rodeo. I'd be terrified if I encountered him holding a bat like that.
  18. Of all the dimension changing possibilities suggested, moving the left field fence in so they can sell more tickets to the Party City deck seems most likely to me. Not for a 'what's best for baseball' sense, but in a 'let's make a few more bucks' sense.
  19. Robin Ventura. Still waiting on an Astro-Met.

  23. I could be wrong, but I think the Rivera farewell last year was done well before game time, somewhere on the inside of Citi (maybe the MFY lockerroom), when Jeffy presented him with whatever the Mets gave him (don't remember what was said but--shocker--I think Jeff put his foot in his mouth somehow). They at least had the presence of mind to not do it in front of their fans. Hopefully the same happens this year.
  24. Chaos will reign. All part of Brian Stokes' ingenious plot to hold on to his record of Five Schaefer Relief Pitchers of the Month awards.
