  2. Ceetar wrote: The 2014 Yankee season is about Derek Jeter and a farewell tour (although I suspect he may do the Pettitte retire/unretire thing a lot), not about winning. I don't believe he is ready to retire. I think this time next year we are in the same situation we had three years ago when his last contract expired. And they will overpay him again. It's great.
  3. Edgy MD wrote: There's a movement both inside and outside MLB offices (Scott Boras is a proponent) to expand the World series to nine games and have the first two games at a pre-designated neutral site so they can spend months programming it into a media event, a la the Super Bowl. Another possibility is maintaining the seven-game format, with a single neutral-site game launching the series. There are a whole host of possibilities to event-ize baseball. I have not heard this before, but I kinda like it? Staging WS events a la All Star Weekend is a good thing if you ask me. Biggest negative is that it will lengthen the postseason more (if they opt for the best of 9).
  4. Zvon wrote: It'll be awhile before I collect em all but this is the look of the SS and BF cards. Of course Seaver gets a trophy. The watertower supposed to spoof the Topps Rookie Award. The only thing I could think to make it an award for was top Mets. Rookie/veteran status, even position, don't mean anything in this set. Didn't we do a poll or thread establishing our top 50 (or 100) all time Mets? I can't find it. Have we established who this guy is?^ If any of the years given are off lemme know Batmags. Brilliant.
  5. Did Joe Kerrigan go from PC to manager in Boston? Or was that just an interim thing? Or did it never happen? Looked it up. Kerrigan replaced Jimy Williams in 2001 and managed the last 43 games. He was replaced by Grady Little after the season.
  6. HahnSolo wrote: Napoli I probabl should amend this now that I hear they might put him on the bench in St. Lou so that Papi can play first. But I will stick with my prediction.
  7. Napoli
  8. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Mike Schmidt's face/Larry Bowa's body (kneeling next to Garvey) unidentified (blue cap, likely Dodgers, behind Simmons) Now that you mention it, we definitely have had this Schmidt/Bowa discussion before. For unidentified, Lasorda and Garvey are not wearing pillbox caps, so I would guess it's not a Dodger. The cap looks a little like Lopez's Tiger pillbox though.
  9. Multiple variations of Pirate caps and jerseys. Those caps! Kong looking pissed. Niekro clearly whispering "this is a stickup" in Youngblood's ear. Aurelio Lopez!! And Lasorda. Because of course he'd be there. But who is the disinterested guy in the red jacket next to Stearns? Ted Simmons?
  10. Soriano?
  11. Edgy MD wrote: I say "all three" Phillies are topless, but Boone at least bothered to pack his powder blue jersey. Carlton (I think) in the top row came with his powder blues. Danny Ozark too.
  12. I guess those who feel that way about Beltran also define Cliff Floyd's career by his at bat in that same inning where he got caught looking with 2 on and nobody out, right?
  13. Me too. Meanwhile Doyers leave StL down 2-0 in games started by Greinke and Kershaw.
  14. I think Porter stays in Houston. How about Joey Cora to the Mariners?
  15. Beltran's bigger crime in that AB was staring at a straight down the gut first pitch fastball, imo. Wainwright was rattled (2 singles, K, a hard-hit line-out, BB) and was just looking to get ahead in the count. The 0-2 curveball was nasty, the first pitch? Not so much.
  16. Chipper's seen the Braves enough in the postseason to know not to pick them.
  17. That's one hell of a 2009 draft haul. Steven Matz, where you at?
  18. This is really a terrible score, Hahn.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: Fantastic work. And what a fantastic finish by Hawkins. Yet the reign of Brian Stokes lives for yet another offseason. Brian Stokes' agent is flooding Sandy's line with WATPs for Parnell. Mets Willets Point wrote: Was Daniel Murphy born in 1985 or 1958? That photo was taken right before his hot date with Darla.
  20. I only got 5 out of 10 on that Braves postseason quiz.
  21. I'm lost too. Now, I'm not much of an economist Ceet and am probably in total misunderstanding about what you are saying, but if they spent $90m on payroll and the franchise lost $10m, where do you get that they made $80m? I don't get how the franchise's loss, subtracted from what they spent on payroll gives you a "made" $80m.
  22. Don't see it.
  23. I liked the Piazza ceremony, though it felt a little...incomplete maybe? Would have thought we'd see more of Mike's teammates, maybe a recording from Ventura or someone. Fonzie and Johnny probably could have spent a little more time working on what they wanted to say. And I have no clue how they made the decision to have Valentine in the studio in NYC and not in Citi for this. Mrs. Solo took a moment to look up from her book to say about Alicia (that's uh-lee-cee-uh to you), "who is that woman? She's had some bad work done!"
  24. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Ahh, look at all the lovely people photographed by The Man From Topps. Who is he? the un-lovely Teddy Martinez?
  25. I assume this is what Gary was referring to last night. He was admonishing the unnamed "articles I've read lately" about the Mets tanking to maintain a bottom ten pick.
