  1. I must be dense. I don't get the Welcome Back, Kotter equation.
  2. Young hasn't been anything to write home about the second half of the year, and Maddox's overall postseason record, and the Mets pounding of him in last year's NLDS, makes me think they can be had.
  3. Didn't Bob Watson cycle in both the AL and NL?
  4. Not to defend the Mets about Sweet Caroline, but isn't the playing of that song tied in with a sponsor? I thought that was the case the last two times I was at Shea.

  6. Much like Reyes seemed overlooked in last year's MVP vote, I think Rollins will be overlooked this year. He should be right up there in the discussion, stupid offseason comments or not.
  7. Good call by CJ Bucknor, and I can't believe I'm writing that. That said, I watched all the replays, and despite it being a slowly hit ball, I don't think it's a given that Green beats it out. As it was, when Iguchi got the ball out of his hands Green was still a few strides from the bag. He probably beats it out, but I don't think it's definite.
  8. I couldn't tell if the sarcasm meter was on in Irish's post. If not, then yes, quite harsh.

Got over that quickly in '86. Jeez, 1984 was a fairy tale. You used your breath screaming at the guy who was the fifth outfielder for the first half of the season? Early in 1984, we didn't really know it was going to be a fairy tale. He was also a former teammate of Davey's, which seemed to gain him more ABs than his production indicated he should be getting.
  10. Jerry Martin, 1984.
  11. I thought I submitted Gotay last Friday?
  12. Oh, good, so we'll get a half hour of Mike asking Omar a question, then cutting him off before he can answer, only for Mike to answer the question himself.
  13. A rather un-Gotay-looking Ruben has been sent.
  14. I've given up. Anybody want to take Gotay off my incapable hands?
  15. seawolf17 wrote: Exactly... Ozzie was the best shortstop of his generation. (Cal Ripken notwithstanding.) Omar can't even come close to claiming that. I realize he can't come close to saying that, but since when do you have to be the best at your position in a given generation to get in the Hall? Is Duke Snider any less of a HOFer because he wasn't the best centerfielder of his generation? Is Jim Palmer any less of a HOFer because he wasn't the best starting pitcher of his time?
  16. This is taking up a little too much work time for me. If Ruben Gotay can wait until tomorrow for me to figure out resizing images and such, I'll try again. If that's too late, someone else can have a go at it.
  17. I say we lock this and throw away the key for now. Start it back up if and when clinching is an inevitability.
  18. seawolf17 wrote: Ozzie also had some postseason success, All-Star Games, MVP votes... tons of stuff that Vizquel doesn't. Vizquel doesn't get in. Vizquel actually was the regular SS on 6 postseason teams; Ozzie only three times. Ozzie was on the 96 Cardinal team, but played sparingly. And yes, Ozzie had many more All Star Game appearances, but there were no NL shortstops at that time who would be on a par with ARod, Jeter, and Garciaparra at least for a few years, who Vizquel had to compete with. Vizquel will also retire with more than 2600 hits. Is he a HOFer? I'm not sure, but I certainly think Valadius has a valid point that if Ozzie Smith is in, then this guy deserves a closer look.
  19. So where are you guys finding photos big enough? Any Gotay portrait I find I run through and it is too small. Is there some obvious place I should be looking but am not?
  20. If the best Gotay portrait I can find is him in a Royals cap, is that OK? Will the cap translate when the picture is Simpsonized?
  21. #8 has to be an everyday player, right? Pitchers who were on the losing team but not in the game don't count? Or do they?
  22. If I'd known the grading scale had been so harsh, I wouldn't have thrown out such wild guesses.
  23. 6 Ryan Howard
  24. 3 Dave Kingman?
  25. The third answer to #1 is tough. I looked it up and still found it hard to believe.
