  1. Backman - Yes Dykstra - Yes Foli, Randle, McEwing - No Reyes, Knight, Stearns - No Hunt - Yes And to Edgy's question - it is not an All-White club. 1. Dykstra 1. Backman 2. 3. 4. 5. Hunt
  2. OK, so my four-year old wouldn't sleep last night. So naturally the two of us sit in the dark watching game 4 of the '69 Series, where I heard "which number is Tom Seaver" about 50 times. Following the game, Mets Magazine was on. One of the features was a Top 5 countdown of the "Scrappiest" Mets. They did not define "scrappiest" but I think we all know what they mean. For those who did not watch, name your top 5 "Scrappiest" Mets. Note: #1 was a tie. 1. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
  3. Maybe no one else active will win 300. Doesn't mean there isn't anyone in the future who can do it.
  4. FAN via Fox Sports, reporting Luis Castillo coming to Mets for two minor leaguers. (on edit I see Olerud beat me to this) Personally, I would have preferred Grudz. I just found out over the weekend that my neighbor once dated him.
  5. Mets maintain lead over the Phils as Philly's pen gives up 2 in the seventh and three in the eighth. Cordero and the Nats hold on in the 9th for a 7-6 win.
  6. ]The NL official mentioned Kansas City's Octavio Dotel and wasn't certain whether the Astros would consider moving either Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler or Brad Lidge Are these guys really an upgrade over Heilman?
  7. What struck me earlier was Shamsky playing basically on the warning track when I think it was Powell at the plate. Also, when the teams were announced, the managers did not meet at home, they both went to the bases on their side of the field
  8. I don't believe we should be retiring 17 or 8 (and certainly not 24), but having the #37 up on the wall, in my opinion, opens the door to discussion. Granted, I'm only old enough to remember the Old Professor as a crazy old man stomping around the field during Old timers Day ceremonies, so I can't remember his time as manager. Maybe I'm not the best judge, I don't know. It's easy to explain to my kids why #s 14 and 41 will never be worn again. Why 37 is retired baffles me.
  9. The other night Burkhardt interviewed this guy for a pregame show. How tall is Burkhardt, because he towered over Broxton?
  10. Conine is intriguing as a right-handed bat off the bench with some pop. IIRC, he had a pretty nice contribution as a late-season pickup with the Marlins in '03. And I agree with bmfc1's take on Cordero and Lidge. Did Houston really say that about Lidge? I can't understand their position. Two months ago they would have given him up for a pre-game spread.
  11. Can I write in "any of the four not surnamed Valentin"?
  12. Cleon Jones
  13. Rick Reed
  14. Turk Wendell Frank Viola
  15. The Reds and Braves head to the 12th at Turner Field, tied at 3. Cincy went ahead in the 10th on a Hatteberg RBI, then the Braves tied it off Weathers on a Chipper RBI double. Saarloos now in for the Reds, Paronto for Atlanta. Elsewhere, Phillies lead LA 3-1 in the 4th.
  16. Went to the game last night, and noticed that the "396" dimensions in deep left and right center are gone, replaced by ads. Did 396 disappear a long time ago, and I never noticed, or is this a new thing? So long, 396!
  17. I saw bits and pieces of it as it aired and have it on DVR. Two things that stood out: - Joan Hodges, 50+ years after the fact, nearly coming to tears talking about Bobby Thomson's HR. Apparently Gil and Bobby met in the parking lot before the game and gave each other "have a nice offseason" wishes because as Bobby said, "only one of us will be going home happy." - While discussing Rickey being the first GM to integrate baseball, one of the guests brought up a factor I'd not heard before. Before integration, the Dodgers were known to have 800+ players under contract in their system. Rickey, ever the businessman, figured that spending money on an established black player was a much better use of the Dodgers money than paying hundreds of kids who'd never sniff the major leagues. Can't wait to watch it in full.
  18. Somewhat lost in the Robert Stratton article is the mention that one of his competitors was 49-year old one time Met Mike Marshall!
  19. Centerfield wrote: Without looking at the rest of the list, I'm guessing a few of these are no-brainers. 3 - Babe Ruth 16 - Joe Montana 23 - Michael Jordan 32 - Magic Johnson 34 - Walter Payton 42 - Jackie Robinson 99 - Wayne Gretzky I haven't looked at the whole list either, but #32 to Magic is not a no-brainer...Other wearers of 32 include OJ Simpson, Jim Brown, Sandy Koufax, Franco Harris, too I think.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Houston is sitting Biggio while he's on the road so his 3,000th hit will come at home (needs 3) I never liked the logic behind this. What if he goes in a slump on the homestand?
  21. Instead of messing with the World Series, how about having a postseason All Star Game, where they could schedule the "bustling convention" as Boras prescribes. They could even create an "Awards Night" where the MVPs, Cy Youngs, etc. are announced. Now, about changing the series to best of nine. If Games 1 & 2 are neutral site games, and 3 and 4 are at one team's home park, it's conceivable a team could be down 4 games to 0 before playing a game in their building. Don't like that.
  22. Willets Point wrote: I think we're past panic time and into rebuilding time. Seriously. Even if this team manages to go .500 or thereabouts and squeak in as a wild card I'd rather that Omar do something to build this team up as a consistent contender rather than the lighting in the bottle squad held together by duct tape we have now. I'd start by weeding out the older guys (Glavine, Hernandez, Easley, Franco, Valentin, Sele, LoDuca, Green and yes, maybe even Delgado). Maybe some of them can bring us prospects from AL contenders at the trade deadline. In their place bring up some of current top performers from AAA & AA and let them play out the season. They can't do any worse than the team is now. Take it easy Willets. They're still in first place. I'm sure there was a Cardinal fan somewhere last year who was ready to blow up the roster mid-season. I'll point out that we already have one of our current top AAA players on the big league roster...his name is Ricky Ledee. I can't believe you really want what you say you want.
  23. Delgado has 1 single in June? Wow.
  24. questions on the course for Glavine: Slower: Bream or Delgado? Better golfer: Smoltz or Maddux? Better hockey player: Glavine or Jason Priestley?
