And it's not like the Mets are going to be playing in their home city's first playoff series in 75 years, but the front office isn't worried because of course they'll get back next season and the fans can see the team's best player in the playoffs then.

Unfortunately, there's nobody better suited right now. I wouldn't exactly kill myself trying to re-sign him over the winter. He's under team control, so that's not an issue. He hasn't hit consistently since the ASB, though. He's still making contact, so I'm hopeful the hits will come. And he still had two major contributions over the past 10 days.

  4. He's been effective so far. He's done well adjusting to a reduced velocity, but the key is what happens after teams adjust to him.
  5. Byrd would certainly be claimed were he to be put through waivers at this point, so even if the Mets were to consider dealing him now, they could only negotiate with one team and that would probably reduce what they could get for him. Rios has had several seasons at least as good as Byrd's current one, but he's also been paid good money for some pretty bad seasons. (Remember the White Sox got him in the first place off a straight waiver claim.) Byrd is outperforming him this year, and as Vic said, he carries no future risk. The fact that the White Sox got anything at all for a contract they didn't mind shedding says something about the market value for outfielders. And if Rios is a starting player, then Byrd would have been as well.
  6. What's impressive is that it was thirty years ago in a last place season, and people remember it like it was yesterday.
  7. He's a righty Daniel Murphy right now, but pitch recognition is the key to whether he'll be more than that. The one thing he hasn't done in the minors is draw walks.
  8. Our best hitter right now got on again with yet another double, and Buck plates him.
  9. The way Ike is drawing walks, don't they have to start throwing him more fastballs soon? (PS his OPS since the ASB is 1.056). I'm sure Mookie Wilson had a big smile in the eighth inning last night.

Right, they balked at Boras' first salvo of contract demands which demanded specific merchandising tents and everything in a big prospectus type of document. Which gave Phillips/Wilpon the "24 and 1" out. Though tin-foil hat wearers would claim that it, Phillips falling on the sword so early when none of the original demands would eventually show up in Texas or The Bronx, was because the Wilpons wanted to keep the franchise value down for their eventual buyout of Doubleday's portion of the franchise. Tents or not, the "24 and 1" scenario happened in Texas. There was only one team where A-Rod could go and it not be a "24 and 1" scenario. And he's playing for them tonight.

Talk about a "can't miss prospect" that we missed out on turning around for a big ticket item...well when the Wilpons could have afforded a big ticket item! = This goes back to our scouts in the DR. They dropped the ball on F-Mart in more ways than one.
  12. Three Dominican minor-league free agents signed during the Minaya era were suspended today. Makes you wonder who was doing the scouting in the DR, and how closely were they paying attention.
  13. We should probably makes this a "Memories of Jordanny Valdespin" thread, as I really don't see how he plays for the Mets again.

Edgy MD wrote: Nymr83 wrote: The initial ten year Texas contract ended up being probably one of the best long-term deals ever signed by a franchise!, it would have been even more valuable had the Yankees not moved him to 3rd while he was still a near gold-glove caliber defender at SS in favor of playing an inferior defender at SS. its the extension that screwed the Yankees. Yabbut, the extension was prompted by him moving to exercise an exit clause in the original contract, was it not? That, and the fact that the Rangers felt that they were better off dealing him four years into his contract, and only the Yankees and Red Sox stepped in as suitors. Phillips made a gut call based on assessment of A-Rod's personality and character rather than his numbers. The assessment of his personality and character has proven to be spot on. That doesn't make Phillips a genius -- the Mariners spent $35M for three years of Ichiro that offseason, while the GM of a team with a glaring hole in rightfield and no leadoff hitter and a manager who knew the Japanese game better than anybody else in America spent $40M for three years of Kevin Appier. But I'm glad the Mets are not associated with Alex Rodriguez, and the move for which Phillips took by far the most heat is, I think, the smartest thing he did in his Mets tenure.
  15. I was just thinking earlier today that Young doesn't drive the ball nearly often enough. He drove that one!
  16. Hmm. I don't sacrifice with a guy who's 4 for 4 getting on tonight, and I don't intentionally walk Q to face two better hitters with the bases full.
  17. I could see a semi-platoon between Duda and Lagares, where the decision on who plays depends as much on whether our pitcher gives up more grounders than fly balls as on whether their pitcher is righty or lefty. I'd be reluctant to bench Young; he's not Reyes by a longshot, but he looks like Reyes compared to anybody else the Mets have led off with the last two years.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: At least you understood. It's certainly costing us offense and defense, and has put Lagares in a position to flop. I went to game three at the Nationals Park and we had a four-man bench ---- Turner, Brown, Satin, and Gorgeous. That wasn't going to get it done. In hindsight, the guy it most put in a position to flop was Carlos Torres. But I do think the four-man, lefty-free bench is untenable.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: Seems like an emotional choice to declare Legares exclusive starter and now Nieuwenhuis has been farmed out when he was not only contributing, but had been the spark that got them started. We could have used him in game two. He hadn't had a hit since the 13th and Lagares had gotten relatively hot, so I'm OK with that aspect of it. I'm not sure that sacrificing a hitting spot for a sixth starter gives us anything, other than fewer starts by Harvey (which may or may not be a good thing).
  20. smg58 wrote: He's not more than a couple of good weeks from getting his numbers back up to his career norms, so I wouldn't panic over performance (of course, I've been saying that most of the season at this point). After yesterday, he's up to .286/.320/.421, as opposed to his career line of .290/.335/.426. That only took a couple of days.
  21. Before we start haggling the price down, keep in mind that Stanton (much like Harvey) would be desirable to every team in the league. Negotiating the price is what you do when there are two or three teams left in the bidding and your offer is the closest to getting it done. Of course I'd balk at dealing Harvey, but one of the 28 other teams interested in Stanton might offer something comparable.
  22. Braun is not appealing. On edit: in more ways than one.
  23. He's not more than a couple of good weeks from getting his numbers back up to his career norms, so I wouldn't panic over performance (of course, I've been saying that most of the season at this point). The questions to ask with him are whether or not he's replaceable in-house (I'm fairly certain the answer is yes), and can he get us something worth having. Third base seems to be a more in-demand position right now than second base; I could see the Yankees, Red Sox, and Indians having interest in him at third, but maybe the Dodgers among contending teams would see him as a clear upgrade at second. So I think the answer to the second question depends on whether other teams think they could deal for him today and pencil him in at third tomorrow. He might be easier to move in the offseason.
  24. I'm kind of surprised Turner wasn't sent down in favor of Tejada, who's been swinging the bat very well lately. That last spot in the pen is very much up for grabs, and I don't have a problem with Germen getting an extended look here.
  25. Gee should not be ahead of Hefner on the depth chart at this point. The call on Duda will be the opposite of whatever the call on Ike is. One of them will be our first baseman (at least against righties), and one of them won't be back. Duda has the better trade value right now, but cutting bait on Davis is looking like an unfortunate but perhaps necessary possibility. I think I like Young as a centerfielder, especially if we can find a leftfielder who can hit without killing the defense. Let Kirk and either Lagares or Brown come off the bench. Brown would be needed if Choo gets signed, because Choo has never hit lefties well. A sleeper FA outfield option, depending on his health, is Corey Hart. D'Arnaud still has time to get enough ABs this year to make catching in Queens next year a viable option. Hopefully that will happen. The pen has a few spots to fill, but in theory we should be able to pay for some quality to go with what we already have. I'd like to see Aardsma come back, and I think Torres is legit. And pitching is the strength of our farm system, so we'll have more depth than we've had in a while.
