  2. He'd have to pitch awfully well and be injury-free to get to 215 innings. The Mets have perfectly sound baseball reasons to exercise caution with him, and it would take Johan in his prime to get the inning count to where it would even become an issue. If he's actually on pace for it at the All-Star Break, we can discuss it further then
  3. Should I feel guilty about looking at this as a blessing in disguise?
  4. I can't do the 12th, but I could make the 13th work.

That is from Mike Puma at the NY Post The Mets offer did not have the vesting option but was otherwise the same as what Cleveland offered. The Mets were willing to wait 2-3 weeks to see what an arbiter said, but Bourn and Boras (understandably at this point in the preseason) were not.
  6. 4 and 48. I'd have been comfortable with 3 and 36, but more than that + a first-rounder wouldn't have been that palatable. Plan B...
  7. Sanchez definitely interests me if he's healthy. K-Rod will sign somewhere. Wilson will sign somewhere when he's fully ready, which may be a few months.
  8. I agree, provided plan B isn't to go north with the outfield we currently have.
  9. I'd sooner take hitting tips from Rey Ordonez.

  11. It's easy to overlook Stearns because he played on some horrible teams. But he had some surprisingly high OBP years in there, and his 1978 season is much better in hindsight than I remember anybody thinking at the time. The 141 games he played behind the plate in 1978 took their toll however.
  12. Tuesdays are very bad for me, except for March 19th (my evening class is off). I could do Monday or Wednesday, but Thursday or Friday would be better.
  13. I'm inclined to think that Wil Flores has gone from overrated to underrated. But that might wind up working in our favor.
  14. I thought he'd more than make up for the difference between Pagan and Torres. This is why I'm not a GM.
  15. He certainly didn't perform poorly last year, but the Red Sox were concerned enough to non-tender him after he posted a 1.58 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. Seems low risk, high potential reward.
  16. Edgy MD wrote: Now, as baseball teams head to spring training under a tougher new policy, the Biogenesis records affirm that the war on doping has been as futile as the War on Drugs. I'm not sure I believe that. I'm not sure either. I saw the names of six active baseball players, of whom three tested positive last year. Could you conclude that MLB testing system still needs improvement? Sure. Could you conclude that it's failed? No, not at all.
  17. http://www.miaminewtimes.com/2013-01-31/news/a-rod-and-doping-a-miami-clinic-supplies-drugs-to-sports-biggest-names/ A lot of names, many of whom have been caught in the last year. But yeah, it's obvious who the big name is. If there's language in his contract allowing the Yankees to void it if something like this happens, he's the biggest idiot on the planet.
  18. Kyle Blanks. Calling him an injury risk would be understating things, but 20 homers in 420 ABs while playing home games in Petco screams upside, and it's not clear the Pads have room for him even if he's healthy. He's actually been a plus defensive outfielder, proving that converted first basemen aren't doomed to be hopeless. I bet he'd cut down on the Ks if he could just get regular at-bats, too. I'd offer Valdespin (the Padres were rumored to be looking for a lefthanded reserve infielder, plus Minaya likes him). He'd basically be a cheap lottery ticket, but that might be the direction the Mets need to go at this point.
  19. $4M, plus incentives. I'll take it, happily.
  20. Bourn is the best defensive outfielder in baseball right now, which makes him quite a bit more valuable than most people realize. (Bill James has him in the top 10 among all players for total runs last year.) The catch is that he just turned 30, and players whose game depends a lot on speed tend to decline sooner and faster than, say, power hitters. Losing the draft pick would hurt, but a team-friendly contract would lessen the blow of that. I think he'd be a bargain at 3 and 30.
  21. Prado has a 109 career OPS+ to Upton's 117. That's not a big difference, especially when you consider that Prado can play anywhere. Delgado is already major-league ready and is poised to improve, and two of the Braves' top 5 prospects are going as well. The Braves are paying for the 2011 version of Justin Upton, but they lose this deal if they get anything less than that.
  22. This is excellent news. Marcum (assuming he's healthy, naturally) will be solid.
  23. He's in a similar boat as Murphy, in that his natural position is third base and he won't be playing that here any time soon. I don't think he's less viable as a hitter than Cowgill or Brown, but he obviously needs a place to play. Even spelling Ike at first against some lefties might not make him useful enough to carry. I think the Mets also have to consider finding a team than can use Lutz and has somebody of similar value who would have a role here.
  24. Are you looking for anything in particular?
