  1. I liked Bailor until I took a look at his actual statline. Getting Sid for him really was criminal. McEwing had two good weeks in the summer of 2001 and lived off them for far longer than he ought to have.
  2. I'm very impressed and encouraged that he was handling pitching in Vegas so well (36/9 K/BB, 2.74 ERA). Hopefully the second time is a charm.
  3. Add Carlos Zambrano to the list.

  5. Fernando Martinez got DFA'd by the Astros. A .501 OPS and 12 to 1 K/BB ratio in 33 ABs aren't going to keep him employed, talent or not.

And it wasn't just the overall results that were concerning-- it was the fact that the walks were up AND the command in general (fastball AND breaking ball) was absent. Given that his explicit marching orders for the last two years have been "pound the zone/trust your stuff," it was more than a little disconcerting... and, apparently, indicative of mechanical issues. His execution during the last two starts, though, seems to allay those fears... or at least stanch the "paranoia" a little. He would hardly be the first pitcher whose mechanics got all screwed up when he moved to a bone dry, high-altitude, very hitter-friendly environment. It's very easy to stop trusting your stuff when your breaking pitches break later and the ball carries farther when it's hit. I'd like to see how he does in a home game with the adjustments. On the other hand, I'm not sure it's in his best interests to pitch many games in Vegas, regardless of how well he's doing.

The .367/.440/.622 line is nice, but Lagares wasn't that far behind that when he got the call. I'm perplexed by Collins' handling of Cowgill -- he gives him the starting job, Cowgill gets a grand slam on opening Day, then doesn't start against righties after that -- but Cowgill didn't do enough with his opportunities when given the chance. Pitchers were baiting him with borderline strikes on the outside corner when he was ahead in the count, and he kept swinging. Patience was never his problem in the minors, so I think he got too easily frustrated and it snowballed. Hopefully a few weeks of regular playing time will do him some good, because I still think there's some upside there.
  8. There's no easy answer here. I wouldn't have lost with somebody other than Parnell out there last night, but maybe that wouldn't be in the team's best long-term interests. I have to agree with the notion that the current Mets team won't make any manager look good.
  9. Danny Heep's reaction remains priceless. Did anybody actually stay up for it?

  12. Stanton will be put on the block sooner or later. But you have to factor in the likelihood that 28 other teams would want him, and some of them will be in a better position to contend in July or going into next year than the Mets. Wheeler, D'Arnaud, Syndegaard, and Wil Flores would probably have to be your opening offer.
  13. 1984 Tigers: because I won a Strat-o-Matic league with them. 1977-78 Yankees: I don't miss rooting for the Yankees, but I do miss Reggie bars. 1979 Pirates: I loved Stargell almost as much as I loved Reggie. 2004 Red Sox: more for the ALCS, but still. 1990 Reds: I was so sick of hearing about the A's, and they never even had a lead in that series.
  14. Sandy made the call I would have made, so I can't be too judgmental on this one. But it's worth seeing how this pans out.

  17. Did Johan get an MRI when he was shut down last year? Is there a reason why it it isn't done more often? Price shouldn't be an issue given the investment.
  18. I'll be the optimist here: 200 IP, 17-10, 3.00 ERA, 220 Ks. The team MVP.
  19. I wouldn't expect much different than his .292/.339/.427 career line. Maybe 8 or 9 homers, but that's not what he does. Overall improved defense at second, if not quite average. Not super, but pretty good.
  20. He'll have a higher OPS than Duda, Niewenhuis, or Baxter, but won't see full-time AB's until July.
  21. .270/.350/.530, with 35 kabooms and an even 100 for an RBI total.
  22. I'll go with a .280/.380/.480 line from June on, with 18 HR.
  23. Ceetar wrote: I expect a good first half, maybe not as good second half as perhaps teams catch up to him a little. But he had amazin' success last year in the minors after reconfiguring his delivery, so maybe he's a lesser-Dickey story. 7.1 K/9 3 BB/9 over 55.1 IP. He didn't give up many home runs last year, I don't know if that's just luck or a factor of his delivery, but if it's repeatable that should bode well for the Mets bullpen a bit. Parnell isn't prone to the long ball either, and keeping them in the park in the late innings could be very very helpful. I'll be an optimist and go with something like this as well.

  25. Given the standards of our outfield, his .680 OPS will be good enough to get 400 ABs.
